Would you buy one? If so, how much would be a fair price to pay?

$20-$30
$30-$40
$40-$50
$50-$60
Over $60
Hell no, what a stupid idea.

"Hypothetically" speaking, if I were to, say, "come across" a large quantity of garbage TG-16 cores that I refurbished and region-modded, what would you pay for such a deck?

In this purely hypothetical circumstance, these cores would more than likely be missing the expansion port cover and AC adapter, come with no controller, etc. Basically you would literally be getting just the core. And while it may (or may not) have a cosmetic defect of some kind, the internals would be fully restored to working order as well as region modded in the process.

I suppose something like this would be ideal for someone with a TG-CD in that they could just swap the deck right into dock and have an instant region mod on their TG-CD.

Good idea? Yes/no? What would you pay for something like this?

PCEngineHell

Very good service to offer. The major thing is price is hard to gauge, should depend on over all condition of the deck.

Ceti Alpha

I paid $40 for a combined auction including Parasol Stars and a TG unit. It still has the extension port cover, but it unfortunately doesn't "click" shut to the TG. So it basically just sits in place, but slides off if you decide to move it. Not a huge deal as this is just a back up unit and I got it for cheap. I've been trying to figure out a way to get it to snap properly onto the TG.  :-k

But this is for a region modded TG, so yeah, I voted for the 50-60 range...hypothetically speaking.  :P

Considering that a complete deck with a couple extra games, controllers, and/or tap will run about $40-50 on ebay, I'd say that a bare, refurbished, region modded deck would be worth about the same.

I voted $50-60...but I'm so over concious on condition, I'd probably pay more for the unit being minty fresh ;)

I'd definitely be interested in one as a backup for my Duo. If you were to AV mod them it'd sweeten the deal even more.

I encourage you to do this, but I wouldn't buy one myself. My primary reason for wanting a modded Turbo would be to get rid of my kisado, and since my only CD unit is my Duo, it doesn't help me.

Jitawa

Sounds neat.  Does that mean you might start knocking off a little cash off your standard services if I toss some old TG-16 base units in there?

You smile, but that's absolutely right. Mods need not necessarily be paid for with cash. I am happy to accept games, systems, etc in trade instead.

CrackTiger

I'd be interested in at least one if they had an S-Video mod. Otherwise a region mod isn't a big deal to me.

Doesn't the S-Video mod cost more though?  Parts-wise I mean.

JoshTurboTrollX

I myself, would be very interested!!

I wouldn't even mind the ugliest crappiest looking one!!

I'm a little desperate to get back into the TG16 scene!!

It would be good for those assholes who have the mythical "CD-ROM" add-on which (get this) can play games that were stored on a CD!!!  I might be interested, but not super commando interested.  Mod it to play SuperGrafx games and you've got a deal.

Yeah, the S-vid mod is quite pricey. An AV mod would be better, since you don't have to wire up an encoder like you do with the S-vid mod.

nat

Exactly.

Although, I haven't written off AV or SVIDEO mods. But if they were to include SVIDEO mods the price would be substantially higher, at least $30 higher probably.

These are all good suggestions. Keep 'em coming.

GohanX

Well I don't see any reason why you couldn't do both.  Like, you could just have a stack of regular region modded TG-16's ready to go, and do the S-Video mod as a special order for more cash.  Personally, I would insist on at least AV though, I'm trying to never again play a system through RF.

$30 higher?

Seriously, that's basically giving them away. :P

Maybe, but I'm so sick of the price gouging surrounding TurboGrafx stuff. The least I can do is offset things a little bit by helping out the community and providing services & mods as affordable as possible.

GohanX

Speaking of modding... nat, check your PMs.  I just bought a Duo-R that could use some love.

I hear ya. I went through eBay for TG-16 stuff earlier today and the prices are just outrageous. Case in point: http://stores.ebay.com/GameSquadStore_Turbo-Grafx-16-DUO_W0QQcolZ2QQdirZQ2d1QQfsubZ3690565QQftidZ2QQtZkm

Gamesquad has Ys III complete with box for $200. I just bought one complete with box off eBay for $40 Buy It Now. I'm glad I got it before one of these guys did simply to control the price.

I feel like I'm always missing out on these deals.

I've been debating picking up Steel Battalion for awhile now, but I keep hoping I can pick it up for less than a hundred.  Apparently you could do that a few months ago... not NEC related I know, but the current pricing climate has kept me from snagging things like Bonk 3 (still haven't played)... pretty sure I won't be playing Dynastic Hero anytime soon either.

I think 50-60 for a region modded console is fair.  I think short of finding a really good deal, it's hard to get a TG-16 for less than 20-30 (some of that is just getting yourself ripped off, some Brick & Mortar specialty stores will charge you over a hundred for a core unit just because they're more rare than a Genesis/SFC - and eBay typically gets some inflation).

The mod itself has to be worth at least 20-30... which is still LOADS cheaper than finding a Kisado or some such, and if you found yourself a CD unit later, you could use the region mod to run cards like the Arcade card.  I say has to be worth it from just a skill perspective.  How comfortable are you cracking open your system and possibly ruining it?  Would it be worth a Jackson to you to avoid doing it?

Anyway, the only reason I'd say it isn't worth a $100 or whatever is because so much of the appeal in TG stuff is for the CD games.  It seems like as the price climbs, getting a Duo or some such would become the better deal (and wouldn't require a region mod for the CD games).  Plus, you're still holding a system which has an RF connection, no save memory.. etc.  That's just my opinion though, apparently guys like these don't have a problem charging a pretty penny for region modded core-type systems:

Pretty much everyone here knows gamesquad is more like gamesquat. It's just too bad they actually have customers for some reason...guess eBay really IS full of retards.

no region mod is required to play your standard import standard and Super CD games.
I assume you'd need one to play any of the Arcade Card games but I can't tell you for sure as I'm not quite there yet !   Hate the idea of making my ultra cool US 3.0 card obsolete!

That's what I mean, you don't even need the region mod to play the games, which is part of why the Duo was such a great deal.  That's part of what limits the value of a region mod I guess.... but there's still quite a few j-cards out there -- and often at cheaper prices than the US ones I guess.

After a good year of playing the US titles I know I cannot wait to dive into the Japanese games !!
