I just won a turboexpress and its in great condition except that its missing the BACK BATTERY COVER.  I won it for $56 shipped on ebay but I was wondering if I should go ahead with it because I seller said I don't have to buy it if I don't need too (I guess he wanted more or someone else is offering more money) but how much would it cost to get another battery cover?

guyjin

DEFINITELY grab it. You can duct tape the batteries in.

I agree. if you don't want to get sticky tape residue on your TE, you can use a velcro strap.  that's what i've been doing with my old gameboy and it works find (just gotta be a little more careful).

But $56 is great.  you can't beat that.

Thanks guys for all you info.  I'm going to get, heck I always get outbidded on the turboexpress, I'm just happy I won this one  :D .

People actually normally use batteries for their Turbo Express? :o

Speaking of which, was there ever an external rechargable battery pack for the TE like there was for the game gear?

esteban

I don't think there is an officially released NEC battery pack or re-charger.  Never heard of it... that's not to say some third party didn't attempt to do it (but I doubt it).

It wasn't a popular enough product in the US to allow many if any third party peripherals to be made. It's possible one was made for the PC engine GT though.

To whom ever has a turboexpress what kind of ac plug (watts/power) it need?  That I can go to radio shack and try to figure out what kind I should get.

guyjin

TZD still has 'em cheap here: http://www.tzd.com/information.cgi?id=502

but they don't say what the exact specs are. Knowing NEC, it's probably different from both the duo and the standard turbo.

My understanding is it's almost identical to the Lynx adapter, and that a Lynx adapter will work but is not to be used for extended periods of time since it draws slightly higher wattage and can cause problems if used for hours on end.

from: http://www.classicgaming.com/museum/faqs/tg16faq.shtml (this FAQ can be found at a bunch of different places, actually)...

QuoteCan I use a generic AC adapter for my Turbo Express?
The original AC adaptor for the TE works at (7V,700mA).  Your best
bet is to use a Radio Shack Universal adapter switchable to
(7.5V,800mA max).  A Lynx AC adapter (9V,1000mA) will work on the
TE but be forewarned.  Pausing a game for extended periods using this
adaptor can cause something in the express to burn out.

Radio Shack might charge a lot for simple stuff like this (those bastards), so you might find a better deal elsewhere. Just be sure to get the same specs.

As DragonMasterDan said, the TZD one ain't so bad, especially if you pick up another TE accessory (TV TUNER!!!!!! but it's expensive :(

Heh, it's better to consolidate them. In any event no such product was released in the US, as I said before I can't say for sure regarding the GT (the LT was the one that looked like a laptop).

That's a great deal, even without the back cover.  Keep an eye out on ebay for a parts machine.  You can buy it for the back cover, and then resell it again to someone who wants one for spare parts (assuming the price is right).  Sometimes they are pretty cheap.

As for power, I personally use 6 NiMH AA cells.  They last a very long time in the Turbo Express, on a full charge.

You should be able to get away with any AC adapter (converts to DC) that has one of those selectable voltage switches on the device.  As long as it provides about 7 V DC (or something close to that, batteries are never so precise, as my AA cells are only 1.2 V on average each) you should be fine.  Just make sure that the polarity is positive in the center of the plug.  You can usually swap those pins to swap the polarity.  Look at the small picture on the Turbo Express DC power plug.

Take it into Rat Shack and some nice cellphone salesman (sarcasm) may be able to help you find one.  :)
