Not that they're commonly bought and sold elsewhere, but eBay is most certainly not your sole chance of finding one.

For lots of people it is.  The rarest games don't go up for sale often on forums and for a lot of people sites like Craigslist or local flea markets hardly ever have anything at all.

No, it's not. I agree that thrift stores are no longer worth the effort, but going back to the lazy-people accusations, anyone who shops exclusively on ebay is lazy. It's usually slim pickings, but I get the best deals on half, amazon, ecrater, estarland, gamedude, google shopping, and a handful of old-school online euro vendors these days, all of which of easily accessible to any slob on the internet. If someone really wants a game, they need to get off their ass and be proactive. And I don't mean crossposting WTB spam on twenty different forums. They need to join gametz, establish themselves at a couple forums, take their time, and get to know people by contributing something to the scene (fix stuff, scan stuff, trade stuff, do an interview, research something, write, etc.). Rare games still sell on forums, but it's usually done without a FS posting.

Quote from: DildoKKKobold on 03/05/2013, 01:27 PMIf you want to spend less than $350, you basically have to obsessively check ebay every 30 seconds for an entire year.
Rare turbo games still auction below the going rate once or twice a year. There's no need to refresh a browser everyday. I don't get this growing belief that new BINs are the only good deals on ebay.

I agree 100%. There was a boxed Samurai Ghost that went for ~$57 in an auction recently. That said, refreshing your browser every 30 seconds  does increase your chances of a good score. That said, you could do that for months, and then miss out on a $30 bonk 3 to someone who just got lucky.

It does come down to time, however. Lets say you were making $30 an hour ($60k per year) (OK taxes & whatever, lets say $60k is your take home.) If you spent 10 hours trying to find Bonk 3 CD for $100 cheaper, your time is worth 3x more than that. (Granted, this assumes that you consider the hunt pure work, and not entertainment itself.)

Bah, those places are no better than ebay for turbografx stuff.  Also, it's like you said on the forums: you have to be well known before the good stuff is avalible to you.  For a novice or casual collector the big name online stores are still the obvious choice.

VestCunt

Quote from: jelloslug on 03/05/2013, 08:53 PMBah, those places are no better than ebay for turbografx stuff.
No, they've gotten better. I've scored a ton of shit recently. Super Darius 2, Puyo Puyo Tsu, a new TurboTap, CIB Blackthorne 32X, CIB Ultima Savage Empire, Harvest Moon 64, CIB Dragon Warrior 3, and a ton of hint books and manuals all WAY cheaper than ebay. People have become so complacent shopping only on ebay that they don't even do a google search before wasting their money, e.g., the forum member who blew $40 on used Madden when Amazon was selling it sealed for $20. Other sites are gaining popularity and they have the advantage of not allowing idiots to constantly browse the new items. This requires buyers to actually want a specific game, not just anything that's cheaper than average.

QuoteAlso, it's like you said on the forums: you have to be well known before the good stuff is avalible to you.  For a novice or casual collector the big name online stores are still the obvious choice.
So what's the problem? If people want to play victim and passively watch their life go by sitting on one site refreshing their browser, that's fine. They're free to actively engage their hobby and participate in a community whenever they want.

I have to agree with vestcunt.  The short of it is you have to shop around.  eBay is the last place I want to buy anything, but yeah I have scored some TG goods there.  I've had good luck with GameTZ, CCGC, GameGavel, and eStarland.  I've even bought some stuff off of what appeared to be a shady German website that ended up being legit (who knew?) and I ended up making a decent score.  Many of the places you've mention I can't use, like Amazon, because they won't ship outside the U.S.A.

I'll tell you the best place for me has been here.  I ended up winning Bonk's 3 in a raffle.  A raffle!  I grabbed World Sports Comp. from a member here, grabbed my Super System 3.0 card from a member here, and it goes on and on...  I'm missing Magical Chase, and Legend of Tonma Hero which are both out of my price range.  I picked up the PCE version of LoTH off eBay just to say I had it, and I'll probably get an Everdrive for MC.  In short, this place has been great for me.  It's taken a year and a half, but half the fun is the hunt.  :D
I'm busy playing pinball, but I still drop by to visit.

Mathius

I believe that eStarland has some good deals, but I haven't seen them yet. Their prices on Earthbound are stupid expensive. Just a loose cart will run you $269 there. But again, it pays to shop around. :)

That's insane. I remember I could have gotten the rental cart for like $5 when this video rental store was closing down back in the early 2000s....

How is it factory sealed with the manuals hanging outside of the case?
Weren't the manuals packaged with the other paperwork?  What really sucks is that sticker, really forces the seller to drop the value to only $500 since VGA considers that a "flaw".

He is correct in saying in the description that the manuals came with the other paperwork and NOT in the case with the game.  He is wrong in the description about not telling anyone that Bomberman was on the disc.  There was actually a small card that explained that Bomberman was a hidden game on the disc and how to access it.
All is well. :)

My Turbo Duo I got new, did not have a card telling about the Bomberman, and jello they did come in a jewel case.  The manuals were separate however, not in the case with the disc.

QuoteDear jimilee2012,

Hello again (thanks for all your purchases from us on ebay and on our store site). Yeah, I get some funny comments on this listing. But I am not sure I want to sell it, so I actually keep raising the price. I at one time had it listed at $350, and the highest offer option on it. Highest offer ranged from $30 to $250, that I still turned down, because minimum wanted was $300.

It is the only one I have seen ever listed, so I am not looking to unload it for cheap.

I saw it right after it was posted, and I did think about it, since it's one of the few remaining TurboGrafx-16 CD games which I don't have, but someone went ahead and jumped on it.
