10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

I've been familiar with that HE symbol for all these years on Turbo/PCE games, but I still don't know what it stands for.

GUTS

I've never even thought about that, my brain just always assumed it meant HuE card or Hudson Entertainment.  I'd be curious to know what it actually means also.

Keranu

I was always meaning to make a thread like this before also. I think it's the name of some specific hardware by Hudson.

My thought is "NEC Home Electronics" - "NEC-HE".

Note that you'll see "NEC Home Electronics" listed on the lincense information on the title screen of some games.  I think that I really noticed it last night.  It's interesting that you bring it up today.  :)

NEC Avenue

It stands for Hudson Electronics. It has nothing to do with NEC since NEC didn't design the original PC Engine hardware. NEC is just a manufacturing partner. Also NECHE is the abbreviation for NEC Home Electronics and has no relation to HE.

Keranu

I'm not sure if I have thought about that before, but if I haven't, I am surprised! Thanks for the answer.

Hudson also designed the PC-FX.

Kaminari

Common misconception :)

HE System actually stands for Hudson Entertainment System.

GUTS

I see this turning into another Duo CDROM speed 1x VS 2x thing.

Some people argue that HE also stands for "Higher Energy", which was what the TG16 was touted as when it was brought to the USA (remember? The higher energy video game system!)...although we know it's not what it means, it IS a convenient coincidence that the phrase works. :D
Turbo Badass Rank: Janne (6 of 12 clears)
Conquered so far: Sinistron, Violent Soldier, Tatsujin, Super Raiden, Shape Shifter, Rayxanber II
