10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

1980-20..

Ive just purchased a copy of Populous and it comes in a double case but i dont understand why? Should it  have something extra in the case other than the hucard and manual. Did it ship with two manuals maybe?

Nazi NecroPhile

I don't think anything is missing - the manual is just too thick to comfortably fit in a standard case.

Thanks NecroPhile. I didnt mean to post this here sorry

A lot of PCE Games are like that. Street Fighter is the only other HuCard I can think of, but a lot of CD RPGs use double cases, and there are no multi-CD games for the PCE/TG-16.

I think originally it was suppose to come with back-up ram.. but anyway I love the manual and I love the title music in that game !

Nazi NecroPhile

Many (most?) of the double disc case games came with extras (map, poster, stickers, etc.), but I don't think Populous did; and while Zeta is correct that there are no games that used a second disc, there are a handful that came with a second disc for a soundtrack (or HuVideo in the case of the Yuna re-release).

On the case it says ROMRAM Hucard and the card is slightly fatter than usual. Not sure if this feature still works as ive not tested it yet.

Nope.  They never got around to actually installing the battery in the hucard.  If you sqeeze it, it feels hollow.  There's an old thread around here somewhere...

No one ever found a copy with a battery.  One person thought they remembered saving on a hucard BITD, another told of buying a new copy, not getting it to save, and returning it.

also the PCE populous is the best out there, since it has an unique bomberman igloo-house level.

ah that old thread.. I can't even find my old populous hucard anymore.. the one where I pulled it apart and opened up it's innards but the hardened sealant wouldn't show what chips were underneath it all.

ugghh I got this urge now to purchase another copy of the HU game but one which comes with the spine card...

I remember that thread. Digi, how about soaking it in acetone if you ever find it? It won't harm the chips, but will probably melt the sealant.  It will most likely melt the hucard plastic though.

Digi, you were the one who sliced open the HuCard? I couldn't remember who had done that!

Anyway, I totally remember that thread because I was writing about ROMRAM (!!!) and was really surprised to learn that the feature was never implemented.

That thread even inspired me, IIRC, to look for the CD version of Populous.

Does anyone want to sell me the CD version?

yea I sliced it up.. don't think I have it any more cause in my zealous attempts to pry off that hardened sealant (which felt like melted plastic gone hard around the rom chips) I heard a "snap" sound and think something broke within so I threw it away :(

VestCunt

The CD version is GOOD.  I also bought the SNES version so I could learn how to play it.  Finally, I got the SMS cart, but it was hard to get into after playing 16-bit.

Is it worth owning the Hu if you have the CD?

If someone sells me the CD, I'll tell you :)

Digi, do you still have the pictures you took of the dissected HuCard? I'm on my phone and don't want to use the forum's search function.

Goddamn! I know your pain. I have a dead laptop hardrive that I might try to resurrect one of these days. Who am I kidding? It's been 5-6 years...

There is a chance I saved the images, so I'll scour my laptop when I get a chance.

There is a lesson on this: if I think something is important/useful/interesting, I should save it immediately.
