More to the point, I'm pretty sure all black Duos get stuck on CD-Rs from time to time so that's not an indication of anything. If you don't like it, buy real games. In fact, instead of getting involved in complicated trades and shit, just buy a Duo. If can't afford one, fix your broken one, or sell some of those games to pay for it. If you can't fix stuff or come up with money, US Duos are not for you as they need service.

This is my new favorite thread.  Every few months one comes along and this one is it.  Ark and Vest pretty much nailed everything logical so i will skip that.  This thread is a lock for the hall of shame, simply brilliant.

wow... there are definitely some shenanigans going on here, obvious from the first post. who just throws away broken duos? if you paid for them you could easily resell as parts and recoup some money. I don't know how much of this story to believe, but I will say that yes I have been screwed over in the past in duo related deals (only seems to be those ones for some reason) but never tried to get a donated system or rally up the pity train. Do something about it, but JohnnyBlaze I think you are in the wrong on this one, not following through with your end of the bargain. That being said, if you are willing to ship first there are a few games I am interested in. Otherwise nobody's going to bite around here after all this.

They weren't "trash".  Just the first.  They seem to have the same issues as the PC Engine Duos.  Taking in account the age of these systems, and the time they were released, I'd say they were actually pretty good.    Plus, what he was "expecting it to do" was something the system wasn't designed for anyway.

To be fair to him. He sent me a message that day saying that PS3 YLOD'd. Though he had my duo in hand he didnt lock that thread saying trade in progress but ......whatever. Well he got back to me and even though his attorney said he would win if it came to court he would send it back as long as I pay for the shipping label. So if anyone wants too buy a freshly hammer smashed DUO I'm sure I will have one in a few days. If you never see this account logged on again you can rest knowing his bomb made it to its destination. I wrote down the serial number and build date of the machine before sending, so I wonder what I will be getting in return. Depending on the story he may have it or traded it or threw it away.

Dye based CDRs are more taxing for original hardware to read.  The sapphire boots are glass mastered discs and are just as good as original cds.

By no means. The only known fact regarding CD-Rs and Duos is that the black systems often get their lasers stuck for some reason. This may happen on the R/RX, but I've never seen it.

The idea that CD-Rs kill lasers is basically bullshit. It's bullshit that a lot of people believe, but it's bullshit all the same. Some people hate piracy so much, even in cases where the game has been out of print for 20 years and both the developer and publisher have long since gone out of business so there is no way you could support the creators of the software by buying a legit copy, that they make up stories about how copies kill systems.

The famous European Saphire bootleg isn't a CD-R. It's a real stamped CD. It is the only one like it, AFAIK.

That's good to read.  I just bought a stack of 74 min CD-R's at a flea market.  Each individually packaged in jewel cases with white trays, which I can use as replacement cases for any jacked up Japanese CD games that I buy.  I thought the CDs themselves might not be very useful (I really bought them for the cases), but I'll go ahead and use them any time I want to burn a Duo game.

CDR quality also has a lot to do with how well they are read.  Hopefully the ones you got are some higher quality ones and havent deteriorated much due to age.

The idea that CD-Rs kill lasers is basically bullshit.

Older lasers only designed to read disc made of certain materials are going to be stressed out more trying to read short strategy cd-rs made of cheap materials and dyes. That is a fact. The laser will indeed have to work harder to focus the beam on the disc. Most laser lens use some kind of raising mechanism used to help focus the laser. That has to work harder in older lasers try to exceed their spec to focus the beam on junk media made to be read by superior hardware manufactured 15 years later. I still have plenty of cd-rom drives for pc from 94-95 that can not read any short strategy cd-rs at all. They make a ton of noise as they try to do so, but it is just past their ability. Toss a normal pressed disc in there, they read perfectly. These days buying long strategy disc in retail stores is damn near impossible, so the average buyer will get stuck with short strategy, increasing the odds of overworking their laser. All lasers will die in the end, but the idea is not to speed that death up.

its true that bad disks are harder to focus, but i have never seen the focus system fail.
the laser failures I have seen are from laser fade, or failure (as in the light source fails), which would not be hastened by poor cd quality.
