@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

Heh, I hate to admit it, but before I found DeOxit I used to use fine grit sandpaper on non-working hueys (and other system carts) ...

of about 250 - 300 hueys that've passed through my hands, I've had several (15-20?) that refused to work even after an alcohol cleaning.  Of those all but one has been brought back to life after a sandpaper (or now, DeOxit) treatment.  Since I picked up the DeOxit, I haven't had to go back to the sandpaper once.  ;-)

Yikes, I hope the reverse polarity on that one cap didn't cause more damage.  If you powered it on with the polarity reversed there's a 90% chance that cap is bad now tho.  You're lucky it didn't blow up on you.  ;-)  You'll want to snag a new one and try again I think.
#103
Mathius, you might still try that DeOxit contact cleaner on the PCE huey.  It shouldn't be that hard to get it goin'.  When I tested it prior to shipping it was "slide the card into the converter, slide the converter into the tg, flip the power switch on... and boom R-Type came up"  ... It's only been rarely that I've had issues with my kisado-style converters.  I think the DeOxit DN5 is about $15 at radio shack, or can be had elsewhere on the net for around that.
#104
Can you confirm, with no card inserted, you do not get the usual bios screen?

Does anything change if you insert a card and boot up?

What process did you use to clean up the cap leakage prior to installing the new caps?  I wonder if you might still have a short somewhere from the leaked fluid.
#105
Yup, you really have to cut the pins.  And yes, you're correct about the HuCard pins vs/ PCB pins.
#108
First clean out the card slot with some canned air, then hit up your local radio shack for some DeOxit DN5 contact cleaner.  Spray it on your card and use the card as a tool to work it into your PC Engine.  (w/ the power off!)  Let dry for a while, then try again.  If it all works out, follow up with the DeOxit gold.
#109
I had to get out my duo to trace the lead, but it looks like you can solder the pin into the hole that breaks up the cap outline.

Ohhh man... don't waste your cash getting second copies of bomberman or bomberman '93... I posted in a thread about 6 months back where I'd bought two TE's, the link cable, and two bomberman '93s only to find out that when you connect up the map is the EXACT SAME MAP EVERY SINGLE ROUND when linked.  Blocks in the same places, items in the same places, no randomization at all.

I was pissed... so very pissed... and my kiddos were very disappointed.

b) getting a region mod done and getting the Arcade Card Pro
c) saving up for a Duo-R
d) getting a PC engine (would this work with the US Turbo CD?

Any recommendations here?
I'd go with: Region mod + Arcade Card Pro

It's the cheapest option, and you get to play JP Arcade & Hu games to boot.  My estimate would be $60 - $80 for the mod and ~$30 for the Arcade card.

Ignoring cost, a region modded Duo-R is prolly the best setup long term.

If you're not too keen on hacking the case up with a region mod, a Kisado Converter + Arcade Card Pro is still cheaper than a US 3.0 Card usually, and the converter can be had for $90 - $150 when they crop up.

I think the hardest part is gonna be coming up with parts.  You'd need an expansion port plug, NEC proprietary, so you can only get it by removing it from a turbo booster or cd-rom attachment.  Then you'd need a card slot, which you could get from a dead PC Engine or TG... but by the time you've tracked all that down, why not just use a kisado or do a permanent switch mod?

I guess it'd definitely be a cool novelty.  ;-)

QuoteI used one of my fingers to roll the gears... they won't budge but after i kept on trying.. it clicked and rolled with no problems
You be one lucky sob.  Every unit I've tried that on the gear has crumbled to little bits in my fingers.  heh.
#114
Belated response, sorry.

I've come across a few Duo's with this problem.  You'll want to apply pressure evenly around the spindle as you pry it up or you risk bending the shaft or the platform.  If you bend either, the disk will not spin level and will get read errors as it gets to the outer edge.  The way I've found to exert the pressure needed in a semi-level fashion is by popping the cover off and using two fingers from each hand to pop it up.  Sometimes it takes a lot of pressure.  It will almost certainly pop up more than you want it to, but then you can push it back down as well in small increments.  Best of luck!

Buy/Sell/Trade / Re: Price Check
04/09/2010, 03:29 PM
The bummer deal with ebay is that the final value fees recently went up.  Numbers I saw put it around 15% on BIN auctions, 9% on regular auctions.  Paypal takes 3%, so you're looking at losing 18% or 12% respectively.  Thus something that auctions off on ebay for $300 could be sold here for $270 and you'd come out ahead.
#116
Quote from: oldskool on 04/06/2010, 12:15 AMI bet the people that are putting these things up on Ebay are all like "oh yeah I am gonna get a ton for all this", then after they are like.  WTF!!   :x
One of the reasons I've stuck with BIN for all my stuff.  Everyone talks about patience when making purchases, and I agree with them, but I also think that patience when making sales can be beneficial as well.  Unless you're just dumping stuff because you're broke, you might as well try to get what something is actually worth instead of pennies on the dollar.
#117
They're not too horribly priced at radio shack.  Can't remember the exact tip, but if you take in the unit most shacks have the test plugs where you can figure it out.  Once you have the plug figured out you just have to figure out the polarity (should be right on the unit) and the voltage/amperage.  I believe you're looking for a 12v, 1.5a adapter.  (someone please correct me if I'm wrong)

If you're not comfortable with going the radio shack route, I can probably custom make you an adapter that would work.  I'd just have to pull my TG-CD unit out of the attic to test it on.  Been a while since I played on it, the duo-r is a lot more convenient.
#118
or the caps replaced... the caps don't affect just the audio... as they go bad they throw off the laser/cd assembly as well.
#119
Depending on how they pulled in the audio leads, a 10uf electrolytic cap inline on the left and right audio feeds might take care of that.

It's a typo; he meant 'pauper', right?  :)
It has so many permutations... it's hard to pin it down to just one.
#123
I was wondering if someone here got it.  Anyone?
#125
I said no way, because I suspect that if it didn't get a CDROM it woulda been dropped like a rock about 3-4 years earlier in favor of a rushed PC-FX equivalent attempt at competing with SEGA-CD... bunch of the awesome hueys wouldn't have been released and instead would have been gimped into CD releases for the new system.  'course, I just got done watchin' back to the future with my kidlets, so I'm stuck in a time warp right now.
#126
It was definitely a tough morning.
#127
D-Lite - I hear ya... I have to try a few permutations usually just to make sure I'm catching all the possibilities.  That particular one tho I came pretty close to putting a bid in on... damn cheap it was.  Ultimately some sense came over me as I turned and looked at my "duo's to fix" pile.  heh.  Plenty there to fix and sell still, no sense adding to the pile, heh.
#128
I might pick up his lynx lot if no one else bids it up too much.  I've been wanting to get the model 2 lynx for about 20 yrs now.  ;-)

Next time I do a composite mod I'll put together a quick howto.  I've been meaning to do one for a while now anyway.

Yeah... but when it's one of like two games you need to complete a collection... it gets hard to resist!

Snagging a copy of MC was a big eye opener... like... "oh... wow... maybe I can actually complete this."

Tho with Dynastic Hero being one of the outstanding games... I kinda think it may take another year or so.
#131
Looks like you have two problems:

(1) No power on the interface unit

Is the AC Adapter an original unit?  Can you test it with a meter to see if it's still functional?  Seems like last time I messed around with an interface unit, I had to make a custom adapter to power it.  I do have two interface units here tho, and only need one for my collection.  If yours is dead I'd be willing to work out a trade for one of mine.  Ex: I'd ship you my unit in exchange for $10 + $11 shipping + your broken unit?

If it turns out it's the AC Adapter you need, you can go the radio shack route, or I could make you one for ~$25 shipped.

(2) A broken "golden" gear.

Only real fix for this that I know of is to track down a NEC CDR-35D for about $50 and swap the guts.

I've also had some success swapping in an entire KSS-220 laser + mechanism, but that was $30 parts and ~6 hrs labor.  heh.  I had to move a bunch of caps around on the original board to make room, etc.

Cheers.
#132
My cap on these is about $50 shipped, much past that and by the time you repair it, add a TG-16 to it, and a 3.0 system card, you're in the $200+ range and you woulda been better off with a Duo, not even accounting for time spent on the repairs.  I frequently wonder who's spending $82 bucks on something like this thinking it's a good deal.
#133
Don't let the Chinese find out their plastic is worth so much.  They'll spin up the old molds and stuff a few container ships full of it, bound for the US.

heh, if it bothered me that much, I woulda picked up my ball and ran home crying to mommy long ago.

so hey, no problem.

Quote from: TheClash603 on 03/17/2010, 06:10 PMI am guessing we are going to see some of that stuff back on ebay in a week or so...
That's pretty much how it worked for me the first few months I was collecting.  To get all the common stuff I had to pick up big lots, sometimes with a ton of dupes, trying to get a good ratio of "I Need" to "I Already Have"... I honestly almost bought a $450 lot a few weeks ago because in the pile of photos I saw a "Hudson Music Collection".  heh.  I was all calculating out, If I buy all this, then put everything but the music collection back up, how much do I lose?  Way... too... much...  I'm glad the magical chase auctions came along to distract me.

blueraven, nice!  Do I have to be able to read JP to play it?  I loved that game on the NES... need to get me a copy.

edit: read the review... thanks for the link!  looks like too much Japanese for me to play through it.  Guess I'm stuck with the NES version.

wow... that's some serious dough.

Do they have an input on them where you can hook in other video sources?  How is the gaming quality on the LCD... seems like back then LCD's sucked monkey balls?

I just paid $300 to someone here on the forums, but even that was more because I was impatient.  I'd estimate a little higher than $150, maybe around $200 with patience? (and a little luck?)

Got one coming from Opethian.  Awesome.  I can't wait to play.   :)

Bionic Commando, most of the NES Disney games, River City Ransom, a bunch of the Square games... and I'm gonna have to second (third?) that vote for TMNT (5 player!)

Heh, just noticed this post.  I was actually in the building right next door, BC Place, watching it on the jumbotron while we waited for the closing ceremonies to start.  Talk about an amazing game.  I'm American, so I was sad, but my wife is Canadian, so she was pretty happy.  I suspect if the Canadians had lost, I woulda been shot in the streets or something on the walk back to the hotel.  There were crazy numbers of ppl partyin' in the streets!

lol, you're a mean bastard.

I only buy broken shit.

So I can fix it and resell it all with BINs at 0.9 to 1.1 times the going rate.
#150
borked TG-CD's can be spendy.  If it's just the laser that is broken, you're only out ~$30 for a replacement.  If the brittle gear inside there is broken, you're out ~$50 for a CDR-35D unit that has swappable guts.

Hope that helps.  ;-)
