Congrats on this one. I've never managed to clear this game. And it's hard to get any motivation with such a shitty game.

Are you a sadistic bastard that's always wanted to dive deep under the waves and kill hordes of lil fishies for no damn good reason?  Now's your chance!

The Good:  half of the tunes are okay; the scenery looks nice and there's even a little parallax, but there's not much variety within stages; lots of different enemies and big bosses; and you can rebuild health when not attacking.

The Bad:  the other half of the tunes are grating; only four levels; and no real ending, it just loops.

The Ugly:  cheep difficulty level where collisions are often unavoidable, making the only way to win to tuck your tail and run away as much as possible.  It's a shewty where you're not supposed to shewt.... who the fuck thought that was a good idea?!?

The French PCE community had a party in Paris last Saturday to commemorate the PCE's 30th anniversary.

The party was held in a museum in Paris, next to the Montmartre area and the only drink we had was champagne of course.

Here are some pics of this event:

Wow ! When does this flyer date from ?

Otaking, as far as I knew until I saw this flyer, I hadn't heard of an official release of the PAL Turbografx. The only thing I knew was that there were huge dead stocks of Pal TGX in France and in England. I still have no idea of when it was released.

This flyer might help have a clue.

What we can tell is that these PAL TGX where produced before the NEC logo changed, ie at the latest in early 1993.

Edit : ok, those "new" Lynx games helped me to find the info about the year this flyer was published : 2000.

Here is a pic of my PAL TGX :

/TGX-PAL.JPG

The question is not "has the PAL TGX ever existed" : the answer is yes.
The question is : "Has it been released and if so, when ?"

The cables came in a box separated form the box of the system itself. There were two versions : one with an AC cable for England, one with an AC cable for continental Europe.

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 04/27/2016, 06:39 AMI think you guys are hugely overrating the SGX. It's enhancements are so small, and it's software so early in the PCE's life, that a normal person genuinly can't even tell there's anything special about SGX games. Graphically games like Sapphire, Dracula X, Street Fighter II', Gate of Thunder or Ys' IV completely blow the doors off every SGX game.

And that controller. Jezuz. What a piece of crap that thing would have been. The size of a Barbie Dream House, but unlike the BDH it has a calculator built in. If they had made that thing it would be almost impossible to find a working one today. You know that flight yoke thing would have *sucked*.
Sure the controller was a huge wasteful gadget. It's a good thing it was never released in the end.

Am I hugely overrating the SGX ? I don't think so. Only 5 games were released for the system and the 5th one looked like this :

IMG

IMG

I don't know if you've ever played the arcade version of 1941 but the way the SGX handled this port pretty much shows that loads of other faithful arcade ports could have been released. I'm not talking of games such as Galaxy Force 2 and other Sega "3D"games.

Most of the devs here that have spent a huge amount of time working on the SGX all say that it was a powerful system.

And even if games such as Winds of Thunder or Dracula X are beautiful, I find some of 1941's background way more impressive and detailled than anything else on the PCE.

Quote from: Otaking on 02/26/2016, 11:23 AMCEX is now a massive chain with stores in most towns across the UK.
Wow !

QuoteThen at the end of the 90s they unveiled their museum which was basically a large retro shop (which was on Whitfield st.)
.

That's the shop I was talking about !  :P

QuoteAmongst loads of other games they had a wall of 1000s of PC Engine games which they had amassed over the previous years, it was very impressive. In the retro shop you couldn't actually pick anything up though, all the games and systems where on shelves behind walls of glass, you had to ask a member of staff if you wanted to look at or buy anything.

Yeah, I remember that clearly. It was the first time I saw so many PCE games at the same time. We had lots of shops selling PCE games in Paris, but none of them would equal CEX as for the number and the condition of games.

You could always ask to try a game before purchasing it. When I saw Gulliver Boy, I asked the guy if I could try it as I was curious of how the HuVideos would look like. We then went on talking about intros and he told me one of his favourites was the intro of Legend of Xanadu's. I ended up buying both games !

Quote(I think his name was Ash)
OMG ! He's the guy I was refering to ! He's the one who ran the shop back then and offered me a beer (Carlsberg I remember). I couldn't remember his name until now !

QuoteI think when you went there in 2003 it was a much smaller selection of games than before and had been moved to one of their different store locations (Rathbone Place).
IMG
That's the shop with the downstairs retro section. Rathbone Place was not far from Whitfield Street.

QuoteI was just looking for images and found this about the history of the store:
https://uk.webuy.com/about/history.php
Thanks for the link  :D

QuoteOne of the things I liked best about it is they had all the game systems set up so you could try out games before you bought them, I didn't know of any other stores that did this.
That was great.

Ash was a big Strider fan. He told me he even owned the PCB back then. I was stunned as back then, there were only few guies who collected PCBs.

This thread is definitely epic !

I'm not into golf sims at all, but when I played this one, I was shocked by its overall quality. It's pure Hudson class. I just wish they had released J.League Power Stadium, I bet it would have been on par with Power Golf 2 production-wise.

Quote from: Sadler on 09/01/2015, 09:48 PMI love this game, probably my favorite on the system.

Two questions:

1) What's the maximum number of smileys you've got in any area?
2) What's the proper technique for the piranha bonus level?
In the first area, you can get like 85 smileys. 75 in the second and the further you advance into the game, the less smileys there are and the more difficult to get they are.

To me, Revenge is the best by far : the gameplay is solid and it has so many hidden stuff : smileys, bonus levels, etc. Its replay value is also great for those who love to do scoring. Back in the day I'd clear the game with a counter stop (well, not exactly as the counter would restart from scratch).

Why do stories about prototypes always turn sour ?

Quote from: elmer on 05/31/2015, 07:59 PMFYI ... I own the copyrights on a couple of "dead" video games ... so perhaps my position on the "for profit" manufacture of old games is somewhat different to yours.
Interesting. If some of them happen to be untranslated japanese RPG'S, then I guess that a few people would be glad to translate them for an official release ;)

Quote from: elmer on 06/02/2015, 05:53 PMThe same game that you were trying to raise $5,000 for in 2012?

No, I was the guy trying to raise $5,000

Pongstory, it's a shame you didn't try and get into touch with some PCE hackers that would have helped you find a way to make a full Hucard release of this game. There are many options now.

I'm quite surprised by how close the PCE port of Horror Story is to the arcade version.

That's pretty cool, I didn't know there was some sort of a connection with these 3 games. The guy in your quote from the TurboList BTW is David Shadoff who has and knows everything when it comes to TG-16/PC Engine (he also helped me with the Ys IV project!). He visits here once in a while - You can PM him to confirm whatever, he'll usually help with that sort of thing if time permits.
The only connection between those games is they're part of the Dengeki CD-Rom and Mook series. Apart from that, there's no link at all.
