I wonder if a Game Gear tube would work, I have several of those just hanging around my house... hmmm..
In the end (for me at least) this doesn't matter since this system is heading over to thesteve soon for a LCD upgrade ^-^ but would be good to know incase my stock Express ever dies as well.
#52
Measured with a multimeter, the AC adapters pushing out 5.12V

I may be jumping to conclusions, I replaced all but 2 caps in the device, so I'm getting audio, and backlight, but not video just yet (waiting on the two caps to arrive in the mail, either tomorrow or Monday I'll have them) but it's acting exactly the same as with 6AA's I'll know for certain in a few days once the other caps arrive.

Hey everyone,

looking for the possible dangers here,
I have a power adapter that came from a old device thats been trashed long agi (possibly speakers or something, I always save the cords on stuff I toss) it has the right amps and polarity to be used on the Turbo Express, and the tip fits! but!

The voltage is only at 5v not the 7v the system wants. I know to use anything over 7v is bad since it could blow something.
but what are the dangers of using a power supply thats slightly less than what is asked?

I tested it and the device powers on and works what appears to be just fine, are there any long term effects?

Thanks everyone!

Was there ever a solution for this? I have a Express with a dead bulb/tube as well. thinking of going LED but would love some advice or some pictures on how it should look from another modded system
#56
Wooo! Im number 27 on this list, this is my all time fav and lucky number... fingers crossed ^-^ too bad my name was spelt wrong :P
#57
You guys are awesome! sounds like a plan!
one thing I just did was notice that on the to be modded express, the backlight works but the screen has 3 dead pixels in the center of the screen... grrr cant have that. with a lil bit of easy surgery. I moved just the tube/bulb to the good looking keeping stock express. So that looks much better now. now I just got to think of possible backlight opens for the future (since im assuming the bulbs dont last forever) maybe I'll do a string of LED lights inside.. hmmm... have to do some searching around these forums for some ideas.

Hey everyone!
I've received my 2 Turbo Express's in the mail today

I'm gonna have to swap some parts around to make 1 awesome stock one, and 1 ready for LCD mod goodness.

One of the Expresses has a pristine looking case! and the screen is perfect! but no backlight, assuming its a bad bulb, I'd like this one to stay stock. So I'll swap the insides of this one with the insides of the next one I'll tell you about

The other Express powers up, backlight, but no video or sound (cap issue, in fact I'll be replacing caps on both units), but the case has a lil more battle damage, and the screen lens is scuffed up. So This one will become the modded one with a 3.5" LCD (since it will end up with the bad backlight screen) and a new lens for the 3.5" LCD mod from thesteve.

now that the story is out of the way, now onto the topic question. The first express case looks great BUT! the screw in the top right of the unit (when face down) spins and spins and never catches, looks like it was stripped, whats the best way to repair this? the hole it goes into looks just fine on both halves of the unit, just seems the few threads it actually catches have been ripped out :(

any advice?
thanks all!

Ah ok, I'm starting to follow, two questions, whats a tranx? and what do you use for the amp/driver?
#60
Quote from: turbokon on 12/04/2012, 12:48 PMThat first picture is of my lap:)

I can tell you on some LCDs, it's slightly smaller then the acrylic screen it comes with so yeah the picture doesn't go all the wee to the edge.
Ahh okay, that makes sense, thats what threw me off when I first looked at the 3.5". but now I'm decided, the 3.5" is the way to go

and nice lap.

now I just play the waiting game for my expresses to arrive
#61
Quote from: thesteve on 12/04/2012, 11:57 AMafter the resistors, it goes to a simple amp/driver, than the 75ohm resistor to reduce the signal
simple amp/driver? is that built into the console or have to be added? and is the CV the LCD input?

better than the 35ish its been going for.
Won and paid for it yesterday, and its in my hand today! It's awesome shipping speeds when you win eBay auctions in the same state as yours

Here's what threw me off

First I found this, doesn't look like picture goes to the edge.

IMG

then I found this, which shows the screen picture all the way to the edge.

(lost image)

(as far as my eyes can tell)
Not sure if its a game thing or a difference in LCDs used
#64
Ah looks like i was mislead by a bad picture, the picture does seem to go all the way to the edge for a 3.5" hmmm that may be my final verdict.. hmmm

simple isn't it
This is truly awesome! Can't wait to send my unit in to thesteve for the 3.5" LCD mod. It's one of those things I could probably do my self, but I'd rather pay him then risk doing it myself. Looking at the diagram he posted. I'm just trying to make sense of it. So he lifts and grounds pins 19, 25, 29, 32, and 39. Then he lifts and connects pins 20, 26, 33, and 40 to resisters, connectes them together after, and then thats where it looses me. I'm not a electrical genius so I have no clue what happens next (which why I'd rather send it to be modded then do this one myself) but what happens next? and whats CV?

from what I can guess, once again I have no clue, after the resisters, they connect to a 5.0V source and then NPN (no clue what that is) to a 75 resister (guessing thats 75k?) and then CV?

Sorry for my lack of knowing here, hoping someone could shed some light on where I'm lost, it's great to learn ^-^

thanks everyone!

Too Many Choices! Help Me Decide! ](*,)

Sorry for the crowded subject line... but here's where I'm at.

I'm awaiting on 2 TurboExpress units. 1 I will keep as stock as possible, replace the caps, and that's it. The other (hopefully has a bad Screen/dead pixels to justify doing this) will be modded with a new LCD screen and a Video out port.

My question to you all is.... which screen should I do?
I'll be sending the device to thesteve for the mod.
Currently he offers the 3.5" lcd and from what I've read on this forum he does a great job.
If I want to go with a 2.5" lcd, he hasn't found a good quality screen that he's happy with and will offer the service if I supply the LCD myself.

So here are my questions
What would you go with?
I like the bigger screen size offered by the 3.5" but you loose the original border/screen lens, and from the pictures I've seen the video doesn't go right to the edge of the 3.5" and theres still a blank/black border on the video so you don't really get the 3.5"

the 2.5" I also like since it preserves the original look of the system, you keep the screen lens that says NEC and TurboExpress on it. so I can't decide. but it's a bit smaller than the original 2.6" but MAN is it a better picture

Also can anyone tell me a great LCD screen thats the 2.5" and where to get it?

Thanks everyone!

Quote from: MotherGunner on 12/03/2012, 12:49 PMExcellent deal Johnny.  I would take one of those TE's off your hands if you wish.  =)

I just picked up a loosie PCE Batman from China for ~$13 shipped!
Nice!! I think Batman is my next game to find. On my two Expresses, I'm gonna repair them both, keep one stock and do the LCD + AV out mod on the other. I'll be sending it to thesteve for that. Now not sure if I want to do a 3.5" LCD in it or find a good 2.5" screen to keep it looking original... hmm.....

no, just no nononononononono.
god dammit.
I haven't paid attention to a lot of N64 games (i got all the expensive ones a year or more ago)
but it seems like they're all going up by crazy amounts.
i mean, god damn, i'm seeing people paying $70 for Conker's!
it's not even rare, really.

but damn, that's a good deal for you!
Selling all my N64 stuff now, thats how it works for me, I'll treasure a collection and swear I'll never sell, but once I sell the keystone of the collection (Clayfighter SC in this case) the rest is good to go. http://www.nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=6&threadid=90575 I hunted down a lot of the rarer stuff as well. Now I'll keep some games for myself (like my Conkers and Harvest moon which I have had since launch day, and kept them CIB and in very good shape ^-^)

but anyway, back on topic ^-^ glad to see someone agrees it wasn't a bad trade, was a lil nervous about doing it, but decided I'd get more fun out of a TurboExpress than Clayfighter (which isn't that great of a game)

Quote from: JohnnyPhantom on 12/03/2012, 09:51 AMI just traded my Loose copy of CalyFighter Sculpters Cut for N64 That was in pretty good shape for 2 TurboExpresses (both in pretty good shape, need caps replaced, and has battery covers and wrist straps), Impossimole and Bomberman. Good deal?
wait, what?
that happens?
god, why is N64 stuff supposedly worth stuff now?
as far as I can tell, its just the rental exclusive stuff thats picking up in value. Clayfighter SC I found as a mistake for $5 (the value of the normal one) and traded it for all that stuff. its worth around $150ish give or take

Sign me up! I love pinball and I found new love in my recently obtained Turbo Duo combining those two seems like a awesome thing of awesomeness ^-^

I've been curious about this too, was thinking of taking a T Bank import card, opening it to replace battery as well as re wire it so its USA compatible. Someday...someday..
#75
I've been playing with the pots and matching the ohms as best I can from the previous link, things have gotten better, just not perfect just yet. I can now get Loom and some other games working/playing just choppy audio at times. Still no improvement from Ys I II III
It's getting there just more patience and work
#76
Hmm, not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but on my Pots, I measured all A-B connections with my multimeter and get the right readings, however nothing else matches (A-C B-C) what am I doing wrong?
#77
I did find this ... https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=8926.0 so far by adjusting the VR103 ever so slightly I got the game "Loom" to go further than before, it plays! just no sound at all... bummer, still no improvement with Ys 1-3
#78
Hey everyone.

My Turbo Duo appears to be getting worse and worse... ::sigh:: but lets see if I can't get some help and bring my buddy back to life.

What it does currently is play All my HU cards just fine, when I put a game CD in, it will play the game up until there's some Redbook audio then it won't load anything (no image, no audio, just spins, gives up, click, spins, gives up, click. over and over)

Example if I put Ys I & II in it loads, plays the intro screen, then as soon as it fades to black to go to the next scene that has audio, nothing happens.

On Ys III I get nothing at all since that game starts with audio. IF I load this game up and press the eject button on the lid, the game will un-hang and show video (just no audio)

These are Retail CD's (not burned copies) and are spotless

Things I've done so far. So far I've replaced the caps in the unit, greased up the gears and rods, and even tried replacing the laser with a new HOP-M3 (either with the new or original laser the issues remains the same)
On the replacement laser I attempted to twist the dial from one end to the other, barely turning the dial at all each attempt.
Also both the white and red cables that attach the lens to the main board have been reseated and attached firmly all the way, no loose connections

What else can I try? what should I look at?

Thanks everyone!!! I hope this can be resolved. ] ]
#79
just re-read it, yup. I read it wrong, ignore what I said about import game not needing an adapter :P
#80
Quote from: cabbage on 11/26/2012, 04:12 PMIt won't work on an unmodified turbo console. You could region mod your duo (recommended), buy an overpriced region converter, or get a chopsado (cheapest solution but not really as flexible).

I'm curious, what jpn hucard works on USA turbos without a mod? Do any turbo chips work on pce without a mod? First I've heard of such a thing... Seems very strange indeed!
Thanks for the update, I was thinking about the chopsado... hmm..

I think I read it wrong, but this is what I was referring too. according to : http://nfggames.com/games/pce/

"Secret 43:
The US HuCard game KLAX is the only US HuCard that doesn't check the region, so it can be played on a Japanese console with only an adaptor. No internal modifications required. "

Thanks for the tip, and search results. I'm no stranger to forums and actually preformed a search prior to my post here. However all of the results I've found as well as the ones posted have nothing to do with my original questions, they do talk about the Tennokoe Bank, but not what I was asking. Hence, why I started a new forum

Those results pretty much just ask for some trouble shooting with errors or ask how the device works.

I know how the device works, I was just asking if it would would on a non-region moded system (as there is at least 1 Import game that will work on a US console without the need of a mod) as well as I was asking is there a USA version of this device. neither of those questions were asked in any result I found.

But thanks for the responses ^-^ my search just still goes on, well.... at least the question if theres a USA substitute, one post here states it would not work on a non-modded console.
#83
oh, i had no idea, that makes it a bit easier then :P

but still, i may use the TBank just as a backup if it works on my turbo Duo.
#84
I own a Turbo Duo, and working on getting a Turbo Express soon. I saw and love the idea of the Tennokoe Bank (a device I could use to backup and transfer my saved games between systems).

My only concern, which I'll assume to be true, is since the Tennokoe Bank is a Japan device, will it not work on my USA systems? will I need to get a adapter/converter? or will it work natively in my systems?

Are there any USA alternatives to the Tennokoe Bank device?

Also, I think I saw that the Tennokoe Bank uses a battery to power the memory to save the games, anyone know or can link me to a "how-to" on replacing the battery?

Thanks everyone!!

Of the few I have, I would say my worse game is TV Sports Football, have no clue what I'm doing/how to pass correctly, followed closely by China Warrior, just did not like it

(compared to these games I have/played: Splatterhouse, Bonks Adventures, Bomberman, Twin Laps, Vigilante, Victory Run, Dragon Spirit (which is one of the best ones I've played) JJ and Jeff, Takin it to the Hoop)

Buy/Sell/Trade / WTB: Ys III Manual

Just picked up Ys III cheap! has CD and Case, but no manual :( looking to buy a manual if anyone has one for sale
thanks!!

Hey everyone!
I love those weird "WTF?" games that are super fun, so since I'm still a TG/PCE n00b what's the weirdest game around? Import or not, don't matter, just curious ^-^

Thanks all!
#89
So far the cap replacing has gone smoothly, the audio sounds much better, the video issues gone, I've only replaced half the caps. The audio still has issues where it will stop and comeback when a new track plays, but that could be a cdr/burning issues. I just won and received 3 awesome games on eBay, well, almost all awesome (Addams family, Ys I and II, Sherlock Holmes vol 1) so ill start testing the system with a real cd and see. But then the friggin Wii U came out so I've been playing it (the nerve of that system cutting into my TG time)
I'm waiting for the rest of the caps I ordered to show up and soon ill have a TG express as well. I'm trading a rare n64 game for the express, bomberman, and impossimole. (Both games complete and the express already has been recapped)
#90
Sweet! I'll have to bookmark that :P
On NintendoAge there was a whole topic catergory called "Finders Keepers" where people created a new post for each great deal they had, couldn't find something like that here. but now I have that link ^-^

Hey Everyone,
I just won a set of 3 games for the TurboGrafx CD, each game comes with case, manual, and CD
I won these 3 games for $30

Ys I & II
Addams Family
Sherlock Holmes

Did I do good?

Looks like this was still cheaper to get all 3 rather than getting Ys I & II alone
