YES! Some 80's action movie style shooting! If only there were a few more like this on the Turbo.

Who can come up with the most badass five character nicknames for these guys?

I just took it for a spin, and it was a blast...until my character got stuck. Don't crash motorcycles into trucks must be the lesson here. Beware!

I'm basically a Splatterhouse noob, so I'm not exactly sure what to say about this one. Fortunately, there's a Game Sack episode that says plenty for me, so I'll just shamelessly post the link here.

Game Sack - Gaming on Halloween 3

There! That was easy.

Work has swamped me recently, but I really want to try this one. I hope a lot of you agree!

Not a single game store in my small hometown in Montana carried TG-16 stuff during its heyday. It wasn't until the internet and eventually emulation years later that I got my first taste of this system. I can still remember starting up an old version of Magic Engine with the five minute time limit, and guess what game I picked first? Yep, it was this one. I don't think I played it long, but I can still remember it.

Now that I've got many Turbo clears under my belt, I'm giving this one another shot, and this time on real hardware. I'm definitely looking forward to trying this again with a better perspective on it!

I'm not going to lie - when I was previewing this game, not only did the proximity beacon unnerve me as I was going down the hall, but the first enemy that lunged at me made me jump in my chair. I wasn't expecting the bastard to be so big. I hope this game has more surprises like that up its sleeve, but then again, I kind of don't!

If anyone has a copy of the instruction manual, it might be useful to know whatever finer details it explains. And for the devious among you, there do exist cheat codes for the Japanese version, but I'll leave it to you to hunt them down.

I think the timing is just right to bring out a classic, and what better choice than Bonk's Adventure? It's also just the right occasion for me to beat this game for the first time, and I hope it is for at least one or two other members, too. Feel free to mock me if I don't post a picture of the ending screen by next Wednesday.

For those of you who have beaten it a billion times already, feel free to use the thread to wax nostalgic about the experience of the game. After you beat it for the billion and first time, that is.

Let's all give it our best shot and talk about the experience here.

If you don't have it yourself, be sure to check out Bernie's scan of the manual. Starting on page four is some information you'll definitely want to have, especially on how to perform the special moves.

I've finally got all 14 of my consoles hooked up in such a way that I can switch between any system with just a couple button presses. There's five RGB, four S-video, three composite, and two component video-based consoles. Aside from manually swapping SCART plugs from the RGB-YUV converter, I don't have to unplug/replug any cables. Additionally, several of these consoles can switch easily between two TVs, one being set on its side for tate shooters.

The price for this convenience is that the following monstrosity has to live on my floor full time:
IMG

And that doesn't even show the other three power strips I have going along with tons of other crap behind the main TV.

But who really has the most ridiculous setup?
#159
I suspect that there is very, very little difference between the SNES, PCE and Genesis in terms of their practical, technological limits on doing sprite animation. They all have the very similar bottlenecks in terms of color, pixel bandwidth, and memory. It's a fairly unremarkable thing to compare, IMO.

The reason why there's nothing like the best Genesis stuff is mostly because nobody made it. Even Treasure said in an interview that there's not really anything that special about moving a few sprites around together. The important thing is the artistic vision to make it look good.

Quote from: Tatsujin on 03/22/2013, 12:50 PMAnd the rest of the game looks like meatgrinder sauce? I think that drac x shows some of the nicest back ground presentation in the whole 16-bit game era. so many details, so much variations, so much graphical content overall. no other akumajou game came just close to that. not before the 32-bit era was ringed in.
The backgrounds are kind of hit and miss, though. Some of them are technically and artistically very well done, like the final third of stage 1 on the normal path. For every moment like that, though, there's another like this:
IMG
or this:
IMG

I actually think CV4's environments are much more interesting to look at overall, in spite of a couple of odd palette choices. They may not win the background-tile count, but they move more interestingly thanks to all the layers and effects. If you were to describe the scenes with words rather than tile-counts, they also hold up very well in terms of amount of detail.

Once you get past the flashy cutscenes and high-production music in DraculaX, I think the game's greatest asset is its bosses. Not only is their size, color, and animation the best in old-school Castlevania, but their behaviors and the tactics they demand to beat them are the most sophisticated as well. CV4 does really badly there, and CV3 and the X68K game aren't quite there, either. That's what I'd tell a first-time player to focus on and try to appreciate. The backgrounds, not so much.

Hey gang. I live in Japan and I don't have a credit card, so I can't make international purchases easily. I also have a Coryoon to unload, along with access to lots of good stuff. For that reason, I would like to trade for some items that you can buy for me.

The primary thing I want is Everdrives from Krikzz. Just the barebones options from retrogate.com is fine. I am interested in getting the Famicom (first priority), N64 and basic Super Famicom Everdrives.

Note that you cannot have one sent directly to me, but rather have to have it sent to you, and then forward it. Esperknight and I tried for the Turbo Everdrive he just sent me in a similar trade, and this is how it wound up having to go. It's only an extra $5 in shipping. Shipping to me from the US was $7.

It's a long shot, but the other thing I would really like is a Dreamcast SCART cable.

--------------

The first thing I would like to offer for trade is a complete Coryoon. I think it's worth a little more than one Everdrive, but if you want to send me two, I can supplement it with other stuff and give you a very decent deal. If you have another offer, I'm all ears as long as at least one Everdrive is involved.

IMG

Since I live in Japan, I can get things from my local game store for you. In particular, this place has lots of unopened PCE games. Here is a list, all sealed:

Arcade Card Pro
Ankoku Densetsu (Legendary Axe 2)
PC Genjin (Bonk) 3
Don doko don
Titan
Aoi Blink (Blue Blink)
New Zealand Story
Atomic Robo Kid
Marchen Maze
Bubble Gun Crash
Hani on the Road
Battle Ace (Super Grafx)
Batman
Wonder Momo
Virgin Dream
Iga Ninden Gao
Cho Aniki
Avenger
Babel
BAKUSHŌ YOSHIMOTO NO SHINKIGEKI
Travellers
Super Real Mahjong
Cal III
Brandish

I think there's a sealed PC-FX Tekipaki Working Love, too.

Naturally, this is subject to change if/when they sell something. Of course, if you want something else, I can look for it, and that includes any Yahoo auctions. I'll give you the item with no mark-up, but remember that big things are still expensive to ship.

Let me know if anything interests you, and we can talk about combinations. Thank you!

Might as well make a thread for this. I'll post status updates as they happen.

At the moment, Esperknight has basically cracked the text encoding in the game, and appears to have successfully dumped all of the script from the first town. I'm guessing that this actually comprises at least 10% of the game's total text, since that first town has lots of variation depending on which character type you choose.

Fortunately, from what it sounds like, the rest of the game script shouldn't be that hard to get out.

Right now, I'm working on what we have, and it's fairly easy going. Hopefully the whole first draft can be done in 50 hours or so.

So, away we go!

Got myself a Sony Wega 29 inch CRT (larger than that is hard to find in Japan unless you're OK with widescreen). Damn fine picture. Really makes me want to S-Video or RGB mod my Duo and Supergrafx, but that will be much later, if ever.

Breakthroughs in design rarely come from this kind of top-down reciting of new ideals. They usually come through either new technology emerging, or from bottom-up branching off and refinement of the best existing ways.

Also, some of the stuff he said reminded me of this:

Well, things stand pretty much as they have for a while. There's not a lot for me to do until Esperknight either inserts the script we have or dumps the last pieces that we don't have. He did some good work toward insertion in January, and he has recently gotten some of the stuff we were missing before. It's not quite enough for me to do anything yet, though.

Esperknight has a full-time job and a family, not to mention other hobbies, so it's rare for him to spend more than a couple of hours a week on hacking games. What's more, he's the type of person who prefers to keep several projects going at once, so I think I wind up with some fraction of that time for this and Zeroigar. I send him an email every day to make sure we don't lose touch and to encourage him. Just yesterday, he made some pretty concrete progress on Zeroigar. Before long, I hope we can finally get that 100% dump for Xanadu II, and a fully functional inserter.

Here is what he sent me a couple months ago. This screenshot shows how we still don't have punctuation working yet. There are other issues to overcome as well. Anyway, it's still pretty neat.

By all means, let me know any thoughts about the question above. Anyway, here's a little example of what's going on:

IMG

This is what the videos were looking like before, but I'm leaning toward doing this:

IMG

I simply scooted the image up the screen and stuck the subtitles in the black space below. This has two advantages - for one thing, the subtitles aren't blocking any of the image, and it just seems like a smart use of the space. For another, though, this actually makes the image compress a little bit more nicely, with fewer artifacts and other strange things from the re-encoding of the video.

Things are moving right along. Stay tuned!

Fighting Street / Put it in...

I'm sure I'm not the first person around here to notice this, but I don't especially care. This is from Sapphire. It's what you see if you don't have the arcade card set:

IMG

The orange text says "Arcade Card" while the blue text says "put it in". And yes, 入れて is basically how girls say "fuck me" in Japanese. It's like a cherry on top of the fan-service cake that is this wonderful game.
