@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

I don't play first person shooters anymore for the most part (they've become too cookie cutter and too generic), but this was one of my top favorite games back in 1996, and I've been revisiting this game a lot lately.

I bought the SNES version from a junk shop, I bought it for my iPod, and I bought it for the PS3. I LOVED this game! And I remember the only version I owned back then was a demo of the first episode, and getting bored being only able to play that one over and over again and wanting to play the full PC version. The only full version I got to experience back then was the SNES version, which I thought was good despite the censorship and the inferior hardware. So much fun walking around a castle and killing a bunch of Nazis.

And speaking of Nazis, it was only a few weeks back that I found out the music at the title screen and on the 1st and 5th stages of episode 2 were the official Nazi party anthem. Geez, what could be worse than finding out one of your favorite video game songs from when you were a child was a real Nazi anthem ?

Anyway, the first FULL version of the game I owned was the GBA version. At the time, I liked this version, but that was just because of how fascinated I was that a portable system could do that. Now I think it sucks, because it had NO music ANYWHERE, and you could only save at the end of the levels.

The iPod Touch version's pretty good. When I first played that version, I had trouble with the controls, but the more I played it, the more I got the hang of it (now when are they going to put Duke Nukem on the iPod?). And the PSN version is faithful to the PC original, but the music is slowed down like 50% for whatever reason. It brought back a lot of great childhood memories, and I'm thinking about buying the latest installment (which is just called 'Wolfenstein') as soon as I get some dough. But other than that, today's first person shooters just don't cut the mustard for me.

I decided to revisit this classic today. Man, this game was so awesome. It was hard, but it was awesome, AND it was LOTS of fun!

It's a manga based on Hitler no Fukkatsu! Oh boy, I'd love to own that, or at least see scans of it.

I had never heard of Captain Commando prior to 1998, or at least part of 1997. The first time I had heard of him was when I read a text file of the manual for the original Mega Man on some website, where he was thanking the customer for buying the game, then later on, I discovered that he had his own game, and that he was going to be in Marvel Vs. Capcom. I as getting interested in this character slowly, but one day, I found a ROM of the SNES version of his game, and I thought it was great, and I never got to play the arcade version until 2000. Captain Commando is one of Capcom's best characters, and he needs a comeback. He's just that awesome. Everything about him. And as crazy as this sounds, I actually think it'd make a great live action film, with Thomas Jane portraying him. Oh, and I made the pic above, so don't use it without asking.  :)

GOSSIP: One rumor going around is that one of Captain Commando's inspirations was the cult 1984 film "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension", but Capcom is yet to confirm whether or not this is true.

ROBOCOP!

Man, I just LOVED Robocop when I was a kid, and I still like him alot to this day, and every once in a while, I will be highly fixated with him, and I think I'm having one of those times right now, because I've bought the soundtrack album, planning to get the 20th Anniversary DVD, which I didn't even know was out, playing the NES and Arcade game, man, Robo is just so awesome and badass! DEAD OR ALIVE, YOU'RE COMING WITH ME!!!!!

Solar Warrior is a 1986 arcade game by Technos Japan Corp., that was released in the USA by Taito, and distributed by Memetron. This game is just downright awesome. I cannot describe how awesome it is in words, so you'll have to play it for yourself to see. The stages vary from platforming action, AND space shooting (ala Gradius, Lifeforce, R-Type, games like that). The game is lots of fun. I seriously love it. It's one of my all-time favorite arcade games I think. How this never made it to any home consoles is very strange. The game is very hard though, and it only gets harder the further you progress. The game's also rather long too. There's 11 stages in it, and that's kinda long in terms of an arcade game.

Still continuing my Sunsoft kick. One Sunsoft game I've been playing the shit out of lately is "Gremlins 2:The New Batch", and it even made me wanna buy the game, and also a DVD copy of the movie. Cute lil' Gizmo must escape from the building and stop the Gremlin menace! The game is very fun, but at the same time hard. I still haven't gotten past the second level yet. Featuring music by the great Naoki Kodaka, who also did music for other Sunsoft classics like Freedom Force, Metafight, Journey To Silius, and Batman:Return of The Joker.

Oh yeah, and the cutscenes in this game are simply amazing! They must've been done by the same guy at Sunsoft who did the intro to Freedom Force!

Yesterday, I watched the trailer for "Iron Man", and when they started playing "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath towards the end, I got SO pumped! It made me wanna blair "Iron Man" out of my PC! Then a half an hour ago, it was urging me to play an ARCADE CLASSIC:"CAPTAIN AMERICA AND THE AVENGERS" by DATA EAST!

You probably never heard of them, and I could understand why, because many of their games are highly un-memorable, but something really interests me about many of their games. Here's some of the games they've made and a brief synopsis of them:

High Voltage:
hvoltage1.png hvoltage2.png
First person shooting game with pretty impressive graphics for 1985. KLOV says that the game had speech, but I don't remember getting to any parts of the game that had speech back when I played it.

Time Soldiers:
IMG IMG
Your comrades have been captured and have been forced to travel back in time by Gylend! Now you must save them! Overhead shooter game similar to Ikari Warriors. The music in this game is really weird, I don't even think the way it sounds in MAME is the way it sounds on the actual PCB/arcade cabinet.

Sky Soldiers:
IMG IMG
Basic vertical scrolling shoot 'em up. The plot of the game according to the flyer is:"EXPERIENCE THE PAST......TO PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE". Wait, why do we need to go back in time to prepare for a future war? That makes no sense! We should just go over and kick the enemy army's ass. Anyway, not a bad game. The music sounds exactly the same as in Time Soldiers, and I also think that how the music in the game sounds on MAME is not how it sounds on the actual PCB/arcade cabinet.

Gang Wars:
IMG IMG
A beat 'em up with the most GENERIC storyline you could ever think of. Some girl is kidnapped by some dude, and two other dudes go to rescue her. Generic story aside. Pretty interesting. And before each level, you can raise your characters stats such as defense and offense and speed.

Blue's Journey:
IMG IMG
Cutesy platformer where you rescue a princess or something (Yay, another generic story!), and a pretty good game. One of the company's best IMO.

Ninja Combat:
IMG IMG
This is a title of theirs that I saw ALOT back in the early 90's. To guys named Joe and Hayabusa go to beat the ninjas in the ninja tower, but the game doesn't tell you why. Probably one of their more well-known titles. It's gotten compared to "Gang Wars", but I can't really see the similarities other than that both games were directed by Tsutomu Maruyama, and a city backdrop in the game looks like the one from the first level of Gang Wars.

General Gaming / "GALAXY FIGHT" by Sunsoft

Well apparently, IMG isn't exactly known for fighting games, but in 1995, they did release a fighting game, and I wouldn't say it's an all-time classic, but it certainly is enjoyable considering a time where IMG was at an all-time low. IMG was kicking ass in the late 80's with their library of games for the NES, but they took a wrong turn in the early 90's, and started going downhill. I've been on a big IMG kick for the last several weeks, and one day, I was looking for a good IMG game I never played, and I came across this game:

IMG IMG
IMG IMG

Which was released for the Neo Geo and the Sega Saturn. Most of the characters are boring, but the game is surprisingly fun to play. I especially like that girl, Juri, because she's hot, and wears that sexy black leather.  8) Would be cool if Kane Gardner was in Galaxy Fight and had the music from the first area of "Chou Wakusei Senki Metafight" as his level theme. Or if they had made a sequel, they could've put him in and given him that music, because he's awesome. I liked this game enough to go out and buy a copy of the game for the Saturn. WE MISS YOU, SUNSOFT!!!!!

For those that don't know, Bub and Bob are the two cute little dinosaurs from Taito's two widely successful franchises "Bubble Bobble" and "Puzzle Bobble". They've also made cameos in numerous other Taito titles like Champion Wrestler. They cute, ain't they? I've had a bit of a fixation with anything their in for a few weeks now. Starting when I got Bubble Bobble for the Game Gear, and the re-release for the Sega Saturn (which also includes Rainbow Islands). And soon I'll be getting the NES version (complete) in the mail, and now, I ordered a japanese import two pack with Puzzle Bobble 2X and Space Invaders, today. I'll be damned if there's not some kind of plush toys of Bub and Bob or something in Japan, because you'd think there would be considering the legendary status of their first game and their credibility and popularity.
Puzzle Bobble FOR LIFE. I bought that VGPocket Caplet system just for that game!

As for Bub and Bob plushies, OF COURSE THEY EXIST (on ebay for $249.99):

This is one of the GREATEST games of ALL time! It's fun, addictive, and it's NEVER boring, no matter HOW many times you've played it! Oh boy, wish I could time travel back to 1989 to play the original arcade cabinet and see the game in its prime, because I was only 2 years old when Strider first came out.

Here we have a rare treasure for the Super Nintendo released in 1994. Sparkster is a great game. And I had to scout all over the net to find a copy of it! And it's mad fun and exciting. The music is awesome too. One of the best platformers Konami has ever produced, and a rare treasure on the SNES.

General Gaming / Twin Bee!!!!!!!!!
04/06/2007, 02:22 PM
I've had a SLIGHT fixation with "Twinbee" lately, and I have no clue WHY. I recently purchased the japanese only "Twinbee Deluxe Pack" for Sega Saturn. Luckily I have the Action Replay cart to play it on an american system. This disc contains arcade ports so I probably don't need japanese reading skill to play it. The only Twinbee game that was released in the US was the second one, "Moero Twinbee!" or something like that, which was released here as "Stinger". We purchased it back in 1998 while on vacation in NC. When I first played it, I just thought it was okay, but lately, I've had a sudden fixation on it, and just several minutes ago, I downloaded the original Twinbee arcade game for MAME. Several weeks back I also got a ROM of the PC Engine Twinbee game, but I only played it once so far. The "Twinbee Deluxe Pack" will be only the SECOND Twinbee game to enter my game collection, and the first Twinbee game to enter my collection in 9 years. It's also my first Konami title for the Saturn, and it's not even a US release! No biggie, I got an Action Replay like I said. I look forward to playing both the games on it. Maybe one of these days, Konami could release a Twinbee collection in The States, and give it some sort of tagline like "The greatest japanese export franchise you've never heard of!" or something like that.  AND, I just found out that the Famicom port of the first Twinbee game was ported to the GBA in Japan as part of the mini Famicom line. > : ( Wish I'd known that! I can't find any place selling it! There's also currently a Twinbee game for PSP, but I don't know if it's a new game or a compilation of older Twinbee titles, and I don't know if the PSP has a territory lockout. Anyway...........

Isn't Twinbee cute? He's in the middle.
