Oh Man. I am so sorry to hear this. I felt sick to my stomach when you said you had no insurance. I'm always looking as well. I will watch out for your stuff on eBay. There is a guy currently unloading a ton of TG stuff on eBay, but he is in Ontario. No Duo system as far as I could see.

I hope the police get this guy and make him play a Wii shovelware game for 5-10 years.

Quote from: Medic_wheat on 10/03/2014, 02:46 PMInfact Doom 64 looked and played the best for home console release until the more recent BFG Doom release which included Doom 1&2 for the home system (not as digital download)......although they took to many liberties on that Doom 3 port on last gen systems........Glade I still have my XBOX Doom 3 copy ...
Didn't know it included DOOM 1 & 2. That's interesting. I always head to my Atari Jag to play DOOM 1. It feels like cheating if I don't play it there. The Jag deserves some love every once and a while. However, I don't own DOOM 2 (not sure I ever played through it), and DOOM 3 carries some good memories for me, but probably sucks now. I remember the whole "monster closets" thing and the flash light really pissing me off in that game. I might pick this up as a good compilation.

Also, much agreed (which you and I seem to do often), DOOM 64 is pretty darn good. I still enjoy barreling through that game. Great atmosphere, fast paced (not like other popular N64 FPS's that will go unnamed), and great moody soundtrack. It is still able to startle me, which is great.

That sort of brings up an interesting question. What video game property based movies are actually good? Of course, a lot of these "films" are made by the terrible Uwe Boll.

These are the ones I can think of..

Super Mario Bros.
The Wizard (not really a game, but must count)
War Games (not sure it was actually a game)
Tomb Raider 1 & 2
Tron
Tron Legacy (My favorite)
DOOM
Prince of Persia
Wing Commander
Far Cry
Bloodrayne 1, 2, and 3
House of the Dead
Dungeon Siege 1 & 2
Max Payne
Resident Evil Series (5 films?) (1 and 3 are decent)
Silent Hill
Alone in the Dark 1 & 2
Postal
Warcraft (Out next year maybe...so I guess we wouldn't know how it is)
Final Fantasy The Spirits Within
Final Fantasy Advent Children

I'm probably missing some.....anyone else know of any not listed?

Unless of course you mod it to play "backups" Saturns are pretty well built.
I had problems with my original already. Wouldn't spin disks. Took the case off as suggested in a forum, put it back, and it worked again (so dumb..makes no sense). Thought it might be a sign of worse things to come, so I strung for an extra. Have to keep doing a copy of my saved data to the Action Replay too, just in case.

I've sunk about 9 hours into Dragon Force in the last 3 days. What an amazing game (after the 30 minute read through of the manual). I love trying to recruit captives and when they reject your invite. Your character says something like, "that's just rotten". I get a kick out of that. Rally beautiful game through the xrgb mini.

I actually bought a second Saturn recently in case I have any issues with the first. Paid $35. Not a bad deal.

The only problem is that the cantilever that holds the left hinge is broken off, but I may be able to fix that.

Once my system comes back with new caps I'll be able to improve its appearance too! :D

I certainly hope so. I am getting r*&ed in the @ss by the shipper and Canada customs. Probably going to cost almost $100 for the brokerage, duty, and shipping costs. I'll find out tomorrow when it arrives and a large sweaty man hands me a POS machine and says, "money for box, now!"

I love living in Canada. For some reason every company on the face of the planet has decided that everything should cost more here and that they all deserve a slice. So $100, means $125 after fees fees fees. Probably the same everywhere.....I'm just angry at myself for this addiction to gaming that I cannot control which causes me to believe that express shipping is a good thing. dumb.

I will check out the OLED when my gamer brain convinces my body that it needs to click "Add to Cart" in the very immediate future. Until then, I'm not going to help it along to that conclusion.

I sold my entire collection in 2009 I think. I needed cash for something.

All my Atari Jag/CD, TG16, and 3DO stuff was sold off. I proceeded to buy it back last year...which has been fun, but also a big mistake at the same time. Prices sure jumped since I sold my collection. Still have not been able to replace a few items. I had Rayman CIB for Jaguar, and New Adventure Island for TG16 CIB as well. Those really jumped since I bought and sold them. Don't think I will end up replacing those....

But still, if you don't play those NES games and/or they suck, get rid of them. I use the "play/test with a buddy" method. Every other week I get together with a friend and we try about 10 games out from our collections that we have not played. If we don't like it in the first 30 minutes, its typically a sell/trade. If we like it enough, we will play it again in a few weeks. If it holds up, its a keeper. If not, its a sell/trade. We just played Double Dragon II tonight. It's a sell...  :(

Quote from: ctophil on 09/15/2014, 06:31 PMThe Saturn was really good at 2d, but really hard to program for due to its twin 32-bit CPUs.
I had read in the book, "Service Games", that the Saturn was hard to program for because Sega didn't deliver developer tools to the developers until the console had already been released and that by the time the developers received any tools, things were already starting to look grim. I believe there was also a comment in this book from Sega rep who mocked the developers that were having a hard time programming because they were not as talented as the Sega developers. This is not word for word of course, just the story points I can recall. I enjoyed the book. Maybe give it a read if you are interested.

Yes, I would ask this as well. Why would it have been better if it was not on Gamasutra? I've enjoyed Gamasutra since it was a site you needed to sign up for to gain access. I've always appreciated that they cover the industry as a whole with interesting editorials and esoteric stories. It's what I liked about Next Generation magazine as well, before magazines started to die. I would definitely pick Gamasutra over something like IGN any day. I've found it hard to find the substance in all the flash on a site like that....but I suppose that is like comparing apples to androids.

Here's a good one. I was playing my Saturn this evening (Action Replay cart inserted to allow me to play import Layer Section). Then I turned it off to switch to Detana Twinbee. I walked away for 10 minutes, came back and popped the game in. Turned on the console and it would no longer read the disk. Tried more disks, but would not read any. Removed the Action Replay cart and tried a US game (Bug)....still nothing. The message on the screen was something like, detecting format of disk.

As I walked away dejected I was searching for a solution on Google. Some dude on some forum advised to unscrew the top of the case off of the Saturn and then it will work again. Absolutely not believing that this could make any difference since I am a tech for a living and it just made no sense, I tried it anyway. Guess what? Worked. The console works fine again. I put the screws back in place and played for the next hour with no issues.

WTF? I sat and pondered this ridiculousness for a while and I still can't figure it out. How in the hell does removing the top of the case reset or fix anything? Maybe turning it upside down did something.

I'm just happy it is working again. Maybe it is a temporary fix for something worse, but I'll take it for now.   :D

Stalled Engine: The TurboGrafx-16 turns 25

25 years ago, NEC released the video game system that fell first in the 16-bit console wars -- but what an interesting failure it was. The history of the TurboGrafx-16 as told by those who were there.

The TurboGrafx-16.

If you mention the system to hardcore retro game fans, they'll know it -- but these days, 25 years on from its launch, it's barely even a footnote in the histories of the console wars.

Quote from: mitsuman on 09/11/2014, 10:06 AMReceived this in the mail yesterday. Now I just am waiting for the console to arrive.
...and if you are truly an old school gamer you need to open the case and throw it aside on the table/desk, somehow get a liquid stain on the manual, knock the case onto the floor, don't pick it up, and make sure to step on it 12 times over the next year and half. You should also lose the hucard in a drawer somewhere and move homes at least 4 times over the next 10 years.

12 years from now you will find the hucard in box with other things like elastic bands, receipts for groceries, paper clips, burnt out lightbulbs, old dead batteries, and a bunch of Entertainment Weekly magazines from 8 years ago. The hucard paint is scratched to ^&%$ and there is a strange brown crud where fingers and food stuffs have come into contact with the Hucard. You now go on an epic journey for the case.

You find the case in your garage in a box behind some bottles of used oil. In the box is also an old Blu-ray player, some s^%ty iPhone 5s, and a bunch of old HDMI and component cables. The case now looks like straight up 100% garbage.

So, 12 years from the original purchase date, you find a newish jewel case and put it around the water (or Pepsi Lime) damaged manual, you spit on the Hucard and wipe the crud off with your t-shirt, put it all together and place it on your shelf like a prize....the way it should have been treated from day one.

This is how the rest of us did it. For the true organic old school gamer anyway. Any other way is just fake collecting. You have to suffer with at least 10 years of stupidity before you can truly value your collection [-X

More and more DLC rather than physical media should increase the collector desire for physical media, should it not? I would think that prices will level out for a while and then start to climb again, but only on the desired and rare titles/consoles. But, who knows... I'm still half thinking that the same thing that happened to the sports cards and toy collecting fads in the 90's will happen to our little hobby as well. Bell curve. Just like Nintendo Wii sales/interest.

it's a trend involving my favorite hobby, which I find interesting. I'm sure some people care. I don't really. Just more of a curiosity.

About 3 times a week I get asked if I have any n64 stuff to trade, when trading games for other consoles. It's actually starting to bug me. I keep saying no while looking at them, puzzled. I really don't understand the appeal (except for a few titles), but I was already in my 20s when the n64 came out, so my passion is more in the 8 and 16bit consoles from my youth....

Quote from: glazball on 09/07/2014, 05:02 PMYour new Samsung plasma is BEGGING for an XRGB Mini!  I have a Samsung as well, a 50" plasma though it's now about 4 years old.  Still an impeccable picture.  (Very fine and wise choice on going plasma over LCD/LED also!)

So my TV does have a VGA input, and I use the (official) Dreamcast VGA box directly to the TV.  It's one of the very few consoles I don't run thru the Mini, so sadly I can't help you very much there - other than to say yes, you will need some kind of VGA -> Component converter.

Gamecube via component is only available via the expensive official cable.  I'm actively looking for one, and yea I'm not looking forward to paying for it.  There are no 3rd party or aftermarket Gamecube component cables, unfortunately.  For now I'm using S-video from the Gamecube.

D-terminal adaptor may not even be necessary since your tv probably has component inputs.  However, it's a good way to future-proof your Mini.  (Perhaps your next tv may not?).  If you buy the D-terminal adaptor from Solaris Japan along with the Framemeister, you'll be ready to run any console via composite, S-video, component and RGB for the rest of your life so long as you have a TV with an HDMI in (which will likely be a standard for a long time).
I shouldn't really call the plasma "new". It's a little over a year now since I purchased it after much research and ridiculous purchase cost, but it is one of the best purchases I have ever made. I have only minor complaints about the remote and maybe some of the SMART features. What does make me sick is that my cat likes to scratch the screen. I can't see the scratches unless the TV is off and I have a bright light up to the screen, but even typing this I feel a little sick about it. It is such a masterpiece being destroyed by that little ball of fuzz. Well..... The things you own end up owning you. I'm getting gel cap nails for the cat so he can't destroy things. So, I'll upscale my video from my old console and upgrade my cat with state of the art gel caps for his claws.
Be careful with the cat...my cat TommyBears (R.I.P.) scratched deep enough for 2-3 vertical lines to be visible when viewing from extreme angle (not the usual place a person would watch, but still...). I have a Panasonic 42" Plasma (2006) and the picture is fantastic. I recently acquired my brother's 2010 50" Samsung plasma and though it is nice, the speakers suck and the picture isn't as nice as the Panasonic.
Panasonic was a definite contender when I was looking at which new plasma set was best. I am definitely happy with the decision I made. It is a amazing looking TV (especially when it didn't have cat scratches on it). My last plasma was a Panasonic. Really disliked that TV, but it was more of a budget model due to my budget at the time, so not really a fair comparison.

Then sell a kidney and get DUNGEON EXPLORER II!!
Or buy the fully-playable-for-non-Japanese-speakers PC Engine version for <$30!
See, now I wondered that. I was worried there would be no way I could play it with the language barrier, so I bought the US one. Live and learn (and then starve for spending too much money).

Plenty for everyone in that library.
With the amount of undiscovered gems between the PS1 and PS2, who really needs the PS3? (not even getting into PS4 territory)
No one! But they craved the Blu-Ray. It's why I bought one. several years later I don't play my Xbox 360 or my PS4.....just my PS3 and 30 - 40 games. Great system, just took some time to get there.
