There was a best game of 1992 thread here, but it's full of CD-ROM titles obviously. By this point, hu-cards were well on the way out, but I like 'em, so I'm asking others what they think the best game on the hu-card format was in that year. Wouldn't Photo Boy get it on originality alone?
#2
Well I certainly like the site, and if you're going to remove it, give us advance warning so I can try and download the reviews to look at offline  :)
#3
Neither did I.

I've been enjoying Out Run PCE these last few weeks, especially listening to the mellow-jazz high score theme which you hear in its entirety if you don't get past stage three. Masterpiece!

Quote from: guest on 07/15/2009, 01:33 AMAll console games came in cardboard boxes in North America other than Sega's right through to the 32-bit generation. I don't know what the exchange rate would've been back then, but pre-8-bit games were pricey and not available the way that console games are today. What did SMS games sell for at the time?
SMS games were £24-29.99 on average. RPG's like Ultima IV sold for £39.99. However, Sega had a budget range that included early 1 Meg releases such as Ninja that were only £9.99. That must have swayed a lot of people.

Personally, the technical jump from Spectrum 128K to NES/SMS wasn't big enough to excite me. The Megadrive however was a different story.

Oh I forgot, you foreigners called the Megadrive "Genesis".

I remember the story regarding how Nintendo found out about the 16-bit console. Miyamoto phoned up the head of Sega and asked him about a rumoured project titled "Genesis". The Sega bigwig, wanting to keep it secret, replied "Genesis - what's that?"
Miyamoto responded, "DON'T INSULT MY SUPERIOR INTELLIGENCE, ADMIRAL!!"  :D

Price had a lot to do with it too - I remember some NES games selling in crappy cardboard boxes for £40! Who in their right mind would pay £40 for an 8-bit game?

Quote from: Adol2009 on 07/12/2009, 04:57 PMI really thing it'd be more a question of months than weeks. Pix'n Love is a very productive company, and a translation of a work already done is maybe not in their priorities.
Yeah I was joking when I said that  :)  Even though it will probably take many months, the fact it's actually being considered is a good thing.
#7
If you can get the translation done in the next couple of weeks that would be good

Quote from: Tatsujin on 07/11/2009, 03:53 PMis it planed to be released in other languages as well? english, japanese, etc.?
That is the 64000 Franc question!

Hey! I just slagged off the PC Engine!   :D

But that's called playing Devil's Advocate. I'm still a huge fan. In fact, I just played Final Match Tennis 15 minutes ago, and I think it's the greatest tennis simulation of all time. Absolutely bloody brilliant.

Do you think that doesn't apply to the Spectrum too? It was developed before April '82 as well - in fact, the start up screen was similar to the ZX81!

Remember I'm saying this as a big PC Engine fan: in terms of amount of memorable games, really between the Spectrum and PC Engine, there is no comparison - the Spectrum wins by a country mile. One problem I've found with PC Engine games is the same with all consoles from that era - you do get a feeling of repeating yourself. You play P-47, then Fantasy Zone and then Ordyne... and in a certain mood, you just feel as if you're playing the same game but with different sprites. You play Cratermaze and then Batman... and it's the same game. Then there are all the interchangeable R-Type-esque shoot-em-ups... The Spectrum had tons of clones too, but in the golden era, they didn't dominate the charts to that extent, no way.

The genres in gaming seemed to narrow as technology improved, and without doubt, as the quality of graphics went up, the ideas went down. I'm being very harsh on the late Eighties scene, but be honest, there's a lot of truth in that.
#11
Well, Final Fight was in 1991, when the Speccy was well past its prime. Between 1984 and 86 however, when the Speccy was at its peak, it had a range of games that in terms of ideas outstripped anything else at the time.  But that was 1984 - in 1991 it was reduced to this garbage.

Quote from: Tatsujin on 07/06/2009, 03:12 AMas i said, it's only for amusement purposes, since the amiga version was utterly crap:lol:
You have forgotten about the definitive version...

MAY I PRESENT TO YOU THE GENIUS OF THE ZX SPECTRUM

Yeah I'd love to hear mp3's of the Arcade themes in perticular, as they were boss.
#14
I'm enjoying playing Out Run on the PC Engine. A decent frame rate, highly accurate graphics and reasonable sound make it a winner (the echo-laden high score theme is especially well done). I only played the Genesis version once many years ago and it looked good too. But which one is better?
#15
Wonder Momo has some nice Hucard art, and has a style of its own that's charming. Ok so it plays like a one-fingered guitarist, but it's something in its favour.

Takeda Shingen though is a delicious piece of awfulness. With it's C64-inspired graphics and colour, enhanced by non-gameplay that makes Energy feel like Space Harrier, this HuCard is absolutely forgettable.
#16
I was so disappointed with Formation Soccer as a one player game. It appears to have been programmed by someone who has never actually heard of football, so lacking is it in intuitive gameplay. I have been heartened by the quality of Final Match Tennis though, and I'm sure there must be other decent sports sims out there.

So here's the big question - is there a good football (soccer to you philistines) game on the PC Engine? Cause Formation Soccer it ain't!
#17
I was delighted to fire up Final Match Tennis and find it was supremely playable. But there's all these funny squiggles on the player option page. A friend of mine suggests that it's Japanese or something. Whatever it is, I can't read it, so I'm wondering how I can change the skill level of the computer opponents. Does anyone else know what the hardest/easiest players are?
#18
I enjoyed them all, to be honest. Well, apart from Shanghai, but I never really took the time to get into it. I don't actually think Drunken Master is all that bad. Gives me a good laugh anyway.
#19
We'll never know for sure, but how good do you think a conversion of Final Fight would have been on the PC Engine if it had been released in, say, 1991? By that time, there were some 8Mb Hucards, so obviously it would have needed that anyway. With 8Mb to play with, could a decent conversion have been made like the SNES version, with one character and a level removed, plus no two-player option?
#20
That book looks fantastic, and I wish it could be translated into English. Of course the PC Engine Software Bible website by Paul is wonderful, but nothing beats flicking through the content of an actual magazine.
#21
I didn't even know that and I started the topic  - wonderful news!    O:)
#22
This game looks pretty darn interesting. What a pity it's in a lingo only foreign people speak. Is there an English translation of this game like Wonderboy? And if not, is it possible to guess your way through it without taking forever and a day?
#23
Good to see Raven Games branching out by advertising on Ebay.
#24
Altered Beast was the conversion that got away -  for once, the Megadrive version is clearly better. What a pity...
#25
But as I said in an earlier post, you can buy a power adaptor on that website I linked to that will work on many consoles including the PC Engine. There's no problem with it, and it only costs £6.
#26
Quote from: guest on 03/25/2009, 05:05 PMI'm not at home, so I can't check.  If memory serves it turns green, but maybe that's only when it's writing something..... I'll check it out tonight.  :-k
Yeah the mofo turns green when writing and even flickers a little IIRC to add excitement to the proceedings. Hearing all these horror stories makes me realise I got lucky with Dr Neo. I thought he was alright, but with the fail rate of the 128Mbs in particular, he must be Superjerk: he needs owned.
#27
I got it working in XP after trying for ten hours. But you know what the problem was? Not XP, not the card or the reader. Nope, it was me. I hadn't pushed the flash card fully into the slot reader!
#28
In that case, you look seriously fucked.
#29
But I think you can get it to work on vista, and there was a thread here explaining how to do it. I'll look for it later if someone else doesn't find it first.
#30
As far as power supplies, go to the 'classic backup devices' link on the left of this website - the one at the bottom of the page (called 'Mains Adaptor/Power Supply Unit' costing £6) will work, as I'm using it right now.

This is a nice little game that I discovered a few months ago. Coming back to it, I wonder what the point is of the little blue potions scattered across the moving platforms. There is a counter at the bottom of the screen for them suggesting they serve a purpose other than points, but as yet I haven't figured out what that purpose is. Can any Hani fans care to enlighten me?
#32
Regarding Rolling Thunder, is there any game on the PC Engine that plays similar to it?
#34
I'll need to give this game another go; I've definitely not given it enough of a chance.
#35
My problem with Super Star Soldier is that it takes ages to get going, it's too fast and you have to start a whole level again if you get killed, sometimes taking you three minutes or so to get back to where you were when you died. Don't you find that really annoying?
#36
Quote from: guest on 01/02/2009, 05:08 AMBatman
I really like that they didn't go the obvious route with this game and tried something different. And the cut scenes are great.
But isn't Batman little more than a rewrite of Cratermaze, released more than a year earlier? Even the password system is lifted from it.

Quote from: TR0N on 12/28/2008, 06:55 AMYou would have more fun if you were not playing such a poor port of it.
The best port i've played of power dirft is on the saturn follow by the dc version.

Far as the cars getting in the way i can't say i had a problem getting around that  :-"
I've a feeling I've just been put down...   :D

I'm getting into Image Fight a bit more now, but my highest score is only 106000  :)

My new opinions:

Download has some ... interesting language   :D

Devil Crash is better than Alien Crush because it's tougher and the bonus stages are definitely more taxing. I think the music in Alien Crush was slightly better though.

Don Doko Don is almost ruined a crap fifth stage which gets on my nerves. Not a great game.

Power Drift would be more fun if the other vehicles didn't keep getting in the bloody way!

Operation Wolf - though my main thing is the horizontal/vertical shooter, this into-the-screen affair ain't bad. I like it! Kinda reminds me of Kelly's Heroes!

Klax is slick and faultless. Apparently the Megadrive version is pants.
#39
Playing these games a little more I have to say it annoys me to find the difficulty level on Image Fight to be so high on level 2 onwards. What's the point in having four skill levels when the lowest level is ultra difficult? Who are they making games for anyway? Pah. It's a decent shooter apart from that.

Download is more enjoyable as a result of being not quite so hard, and it's definitely one I'll be returning to.

Splatterhouse is a game with too much atmosphere and too little actual playability. It's just a memory test with no room for tactics. I'm not impressed - stick to the screenshots, as firing it up in your PCE will lead to disappointment.

To celebrate the upcoming anniversary of the birth of the Nazarine, I have decided to take my spare moments to properly re-enact the Christmas I wanted back in 1990 by playing all the PC Engine games featured in the C&VG "Complete Guide To Consoles" Book Vol III, which I read approximately 647 times in the lead up to Chrimbo that year (I still have it), along with some other choice cuts from that time.

Here are my initial thoughts (most of the games I hadn't played much before) along with the percent marks they got in the mag...

Devil Crash - seems like a decent sequel to Alien Crush. Hope it's harder (94%)
Ninja Spirit - gives me deja vu; another scrolling platformer (91%)
Super Star Soldier - too long winded, and I don't like starting a level again after dying. However, it looks great(89%)
Xevious - Good, though too easy (72%)
Rastan Saga II - Clumsy and silly, a bit of a joke (81%)
Splatterhouse - really interesting this one; bursting with atmosphere (94%)
Image Fight - good, but doesn't induce panic like Tiger Heli  (82%)
Down Load - questionable language, middling shooter (83%)
Don Doko Don - simple fun  (94%)

Plus...
Power Drift - a good laugh, addictive, but not as good as Chase HQ
Operation Wolf - a solid conversion
Batman - original take on a major licence or a missed opportunity? I don't know.
Klax - magnificent; couldn't be improved upon
Hani On The Road - kids television meets Shockway Rider, and wins!

So I'm interested in you guys' opinions, especially Sunteam Paul because of his site, and Runinruder (because of his love for Takeda Shingen!) Let's hear em!   :D

I'm playing this shooter on cruise control, whipping it like a pro. Then on stage 7, I go down a shaft, shoot a few drones and meet a brick wall wiith no exit. I don't know what to do next. Dammit - I was whipping this mother like there was no tomorrow. I just don't understand what I'm supposed to do to get past that stage.

Quote from: Golgo13 on 09/11/2008, 04:49 AMI justr recieved mine the other day, it works good and I did not encounter any of the problems with installation or drivers.  I live in Europe and it took me about 5 business days to receive it.  If you order from IC2005.com you must post on the customer service private message board to inform them you made an order in addition to ordering on the website, otherwise it can get delayed, read their FAQ.

The US roms do not work on the Japanese systems.  Gotta break out my TG-16 for that later.
There are cracked versions of nearly all the US Roms that do work on the Jap systems. In fact I was playing the US Chase HQ on my white PC Engine an hour ago - I know it's the US one because the speech ain't in Japanese..

You realise Paul how important it is for you to get the update done now that videogame den is on hold for a few months. As Leslie Nielson said, "Good luck. We're counting on you."  :)
#44
I would get the 64mb card rather than the 128mb one. There have been some problems with the latter, and the 64mb card (which I have) seems a safer bet.

Quote from: lkermel on 08/18/2008, 06:39 PMHi Guys !

Thanks for worrying about me and VGDen :)

I had some really bad issues with my hosting company (avoid 'gisol.com' like the plague ! they're a fraud). I'm sorry but the site will be down for a few months. I may use this opportunity to fix up some of the reviews and articles. I'll probably also have to change the URL which is the most annoying part... oh well... I'll keep you updated on what happens... but the site will be back !!!!

-Laurent
I'm so sorry how you've been screwed. If I get my hands on them, I'll kick their asses so hard and so far that they're gonna need a passport to take a shit. I look forward to when the site comes back.
#46
Quote from: guest on 08/13/2008, 10:21 AMWhat a ass hat company.  I hope lkermel can recoup some cash via credit card charge back or something; if not, it's time to shit in a box and send it on its way.
Now there is an idea!  :D

It says at the link http://www.videogameden.com/vgden.htm   "account suspended".

What a shame, it was a great site. Is that it gone for good then?

Update: new domain: http://www.videogameden.com

I found where you get it - it's after the fourth race.
The one thing I noticed is that when you go on you find that the other bikers are faster than you, so it's impossible to keep up with them. I'm wondering whether the configuration screen has something to do with that, when you choose your tyres etc for the weather, but I don't know about all that stuff.
#49
Quote from: Digi.k on 08/04/2008, 06:10 PMI haven't played this in a loooong time but are you playing in WGP mode?

I have an old password u can try out but I didn't get very far..

JYO ECH KHA
CDA JDS AGL

Hope thats the right one...
And that's the big question: you've given me a code, and I'm thinking "where did you get it?" Where did you find that code? There's no code in the game, yet there's a password option for it. The whole game lives or dies on it because it's sixteen races - too long for one sitting. You need the password save system to play through, so where in the game do you get the code?
#50
Where do you get the password so I can carry on later? I see it at the menu on the front screen where you enter it, but after racing through the first stage and winning, no password came up. Am I missing something?
