So many people keep asking what are the best games to buy, and so many people have asked me to put a 'starters games' secion on my site so I thought I'd compile opinions on what are truly the essential PCE games.

I'd like suggestions for each section listed, but please only list a MAXIMUM of TWO games for each category, otherwise we'll have a list of hundreds :P

Categories are below. Some games slip into several categories, so just use whatever you feel best. It's not strict, just to limit the suggestions.

Don't shy away because they are common or expensive, if you think they are the best games then put 'em down! That's the only way we're gonna get a true list of the best of the best.

Chakan

Yes, I believe a Sports (inc Racing) and Strategy category should be added. Where does Nectaris fit otherwise? ^^

_Paul

I've added Sports, Driving and made Puzzle 'Puzzle/Strategy'.

Well I did amend my list...  I was thinking that this was a list of games that a person should get to start their collection.  I.E.  We all know  the "big-name" must-have titles (Sapphire, Dracula X, Magical Chase), here are some others to consider.

Well sort of, but just because we know the big names, doesn't mean that others do. The most voted will be the ones I add to my 'essentials' list that I'll do for my site.

RuninRuder

I have a suggestion: make separate action-RPG and traditional-style RPG categories, at least for CDs.

_Paul

No I have to draw the line somewhere else we'll have about 50 categories and the whole thing becomes pointless. You can have 2 entries per category so just put one RPG and one ARPG if you like.

RuninRuder

QuoteNo I have to draw the line somewhere else we'll have about 50 categories and the whole thing becomes pointless

I wonder why you didn't draw the line elsewhere.  You have a driving category when you can only name two CD driving games.  So you'll have an "essentials" list that includes F1 Circus Special and the like, but possibly no mention of Emerald Dragon, Tengai Makyou, or Cosmic Fantasy.

There's nothing wrong with taking a large, significant genre and breaking it down into different styles.  You did it with shooters, after all (horizontal and vertical), and rightfully so.  The PCE CD has shooters and RPGs of various styles in abundance.

It's your show, though, so I'll stop my whining and post my list in a bit.

Point taken. Added ARPG and removed driving from the CD section. It's quite hard to make this fair for all games but we shall do our best.

Yeah you're pretty much right there.
RPG is something with turn based battles.
ARPG could also be called an adventure by some I guess, but encompasses things like Exile, Ys, Sorcerian, Neutopia and Dungeon Explorer at a push (although that could come under Action).

In the end I'll take all the suggested titles and just fish out the most common choices. I may end up recategorizing some anyway but it's not really that important.

Dont change existing lists now (except you seldane - I know you're going to add to it) unless you list what you have removed or moved please as I've started compiling.

A "Best Multi-Player Game" category might be a good idea.
I think the ARPG category should be removed.  Adventure and ARPG games are pretty much the same thing and if you pick two hucard RPGs and two hucard ARPGs that pretty much covers every hucard RPG that came out in the US.
Faceball, of course, takes the "Best FPS" award every time!

I had to think long and hard to decide that I like GoT more than LoT.  LoT has better graphics and more bad-ass appeal, but the play control on GoT is just so awesome because you can change speed, weapons and gun direction at the drop of a hat (and frequently need to do so!).

I haven't played Spriggan or too many other vertical CD shooters, but I think Super Raiden blows Sapphire and Sylphia away.  Sapphire is awesome, but the screen gets kind of cluttered in a way Raiden doesn't and I can't stand Sapphire unless I play as the fastest character.

I think R-Type is the best hucard shooter of all time but Air Zonk was phenomenal when it first came out.  The graphics are awesome, the music is catchy and it took the lame Bonk series in a whole new direction.  I remember going into Toys R Us and racing my friend to the TG16 kiosk just to play Air Zonk.

Downtown Nekketsu Junior High may not be a typical "Sports" game, but it's close enough for me.
I'm a cunt, always was. Topic Adjourned.

Keranu

I was also thinking it would be cool to add a Mutliplayer selection as well.

What do you consider an Adventure game then?

It's a kind of overlap category. Suggestions already posted are a good example.

When it comes to compile the finished scores I'll re-sort a lot of games into different areas anyway. The categories are there mostly as an aid to thinking of different game styles. Really, I could have asked ' list 10 top games of any type' but I wanted to try to get some variety there.

Actually, looking at it I really messed up the categories but it's too late and this is hardly a scientific experiment so it's not vital.

Seldane

I think "adventure" is a very vague term. It is like "action" - it can be pretty much anything.

Some examples:

Monkey Island - adventure
Zelda - adventure
Myst - adventure
Rayman 2 - adventure
Shadow of the Colossus - adventure
Faxanadu - adventure

Just thinking out loud here, but it might be cool to have a "Best Graphics" and "Best Sound" category, because we all know there are gamers who make their decisions based on those factors.

For Best Graphics I'd have to award Sapphire
Best Sound: Hucard: Dragon's Curse, CD: Gate of Thunder

OD

awack

For grafx: beyond shadowgate, i dont think there is anything on the duo, genesis or snes that looks as good.

For sound: i would have to go with dracula x because it has a great combo of music and sound fx.

Torgo, I'm glad to hear that you love Pro Baseball '89. I haven't played any baesball games for CD, but have been interested in them. I should pick that one up.

There's a LOT of Japanese text, but my buddy and get through it pretty well now. The game is great. It has all of the real players of the time, and all of the actual stadiums. They even put the player's individual number on the jersey, and they seem to have the actual batting stance (I wouldn't knw, since I don't know any of the players.) It's tough to hit a home run, which is actually one of the reasons that we like it.

Quote from: Seldane on 04/21/2007, 07:28 PMDVDs are for suckers. Illegally pirated and stolen videos all the way. No menus. No "DO NOT PIRATE THIS!" screens. No fuss. Only perfection. I honestly only pirate movies because that "don't pirate this" screen annoys me.

Indeed, it's AV time. Check out: IMG! Sir, the door was open.

Especially considering this-

Quote from: SeldaneI prefer Mask of the sun. The dawn of Ys never appealed to me, I don't know why, really. Plus, the resolution is so low in The dawn of Ys, and the "frame" around the screen is so large so nothing fits on the screen! This is very strange and extremely annoying. The gameplay isn't that good either, plus, the game is too slow.

:?:
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

OK, I notice a lot of people voted for Order of the Griffon. Was this actually a decent RPG? I've not played it properly, but I'm wondering if people voted through lack of choice more than anything else.

Keranu

Some people really like Order of the Griffon. I haven't played it properly either, but it seems like it could be fun enough. It was probably also voted a lot because of the lack of choice though.

The SNES Ys IV uses the same 256 pixel dot resolution as the PCE version.
