Yeah man, with a system that, like many systems at the time, survived quite a bit on platformers, what's your favorite one? It's a rough one because there are so many amazing games in the genre on this system. I dare say that there are even some here that are as good as some of the slickest shooters on the system. I have to go with either of the Legendary Axe games. I know that the second game isn't really a true blue sequel, but it was executed so well and is such a solid game it's hard for me to put one ahead of the other. Runner up is easily Ninja Spirit. Amazing game. It's awesome how if your game had ninjas in it at this time you usually had something awesome!  =D> Yes, props does come from me too on Bonk, but I feel more in the mascot category on it and that is a bit different, isn't it?
END OF LINE.

mmm...  :-k currently thinks it's Jackie Chan unless Dracula X is counted as a platformer.

Mascots don't have their own genre, they're platformers! That being said Bonk's Revenge is my favorite really nice cartoony graphic and solid gameplay. Silver medal goes to Ninja Spirit and Bronze to Legendary Axe. I've enjoyed Shockman quite a bit too, but so of those later levels are tedious.

I'm sure there are some better ones, but currently, Legend of Hero Tonma. I used to think it was a bit crap, but getting it on the Wii and playing it on a nice big TV has made me realize how much fun is to be had. It's got a little of Ninja Spirit, with the jumping and fast pace.

Same situation with New Adventure Island. It's perfect for playing a level here or a level there. It would have driven me nuts playing it in one sitting (not sure if you can actually save).

There's not, but there is a cheat code to skip worlds. The first time I beat it I used it like a save point, the second time I beat it was for the "Completeing every US turbo game" thread. For that I did it in on sitting, it's really not too bad.

The Turbo has a lot of platformers, but almost all of them look like Mugen hacks of each other. Very few have a post-Super Mario Brothers 3 level of sophistication (or even post-Super Mario USA for that matter). There is nothing like Castle of Illusion, Yoshi's Island. Fuck, even Bubsy looks like Virtua Fighter 3 compared to Turbo platformers. That genre just rotted on the vine. Right when platformers went in a new direction on other systems they were pretty much abandoned on Turbo. I think most are pre-1990, aren't they?

I'm going to go with Bonk 2, especially if imports and Dracula X/Ninja Spirit don't count. If imports count, Blue Blink. If Ninja Spirit counts, I'll go with that. If Drac X counts, it's Drac X. No question.

Bonk's Adventure, hands down.

But I think New Adventure Island is an amazing "pure" platformer, that requires great timing and skill. Amazing game...

Beyond that, Jackie Chan and Dragon's Curse are fantastic.

For the Turbo New Adventure Island is my favorite platformer followed by Bonk's Revenge.

For me the level design in Revenge makes it a better game.

The thing about Revenge and beyond is that the game starts to push more towards a cartoony style.

Bonk 1 is cartoony, but still maintains some seriousness and has this odd atmosphere to it.

I actually like Bonk 1, and Super Bonk the most.

Super Bonk is really wonky and captures the goony cartoon aspects the best, IMO.

Yeah I just feels like the level design and cartoony grafx really improve on the orginal

Samurai Ghost

If we're talking TG-16 only, probably JJ & Jeff (although Kato-chan & Ken-chan is way better due to the shitting in the bushes element). It, like Wonder Boy which it is so obviously based on, is a platformer in the truest sense of the word. Most of the challenging aspects of the gameplay actually come from making jumps from platform to platform or dodging things. Enemies are more like obstacles than targets. Plus I love the fact that the game isn't afraid to screw you over or add in lots of memorization elements that are just frustrating enough to keep you coming back for more. Nothing is more boring than an easy platformer.

Jackie Chan is another great one, and while there is a slightly bigger focus on combat there is some good platforming to be had as well. And of course Legendary Axe II.

All this talk on the Bonk games. The big reason I like Bonk's Adventure over the others is that the controls seem so much tighter. Bonk really moves around the screen much better in the first game. Not saying the other games suck, but the controls do slip.
END OF LINE.

geise

I definitely have to go with Valis.  Valis II being the weakest of the bunch, I still like playing through it.  Mainly for the cut-scenes though.   My second choice would be Ninja Spirit, even though it might not technically be a platformer.

Gogan

For me, Bonks Adventure. I've played through that sucker so many times. And it's always fun for me.  a bit easy, as I usually end up with 24 extra lives, but good fun.

On PCE, momtarou Katsugeki, in a way, similar to bonk with the cartoony graphics a overall feel of the gameplay.
Nothin beats the real thing.

I get what you're saying. But in my mind, platformers are more of the non-weapons-based games where platforming is the main mechanic...with bouncing on heads coming in a close second.;)

A JRPG, aka Action game. You see before "Super Mario Brothers" the first
JRPG to be concieved by the world, everything in videogames was just
get as many points.

A platformer, is just a consumer word invented to make games that have no logic but running and jumping, like the word JRPG used widely means a DAD game from Japan, or the word Adventure means a game with go differnt places, but do not repeat. However these action games all have stories.

Ninja Spirit is an arcade game/beat em up kinda thing, you know the type where you hack an slash against the quarter 25 cents, or $1. Most adventure games are from the arcade setup. Till Super Mario and then
Sonic came along and said "hey guys you, don't have to be so ruff, just chill and have fun".

Sonic and Mario generation was filled with these games. One being a fast paced arcade/shooter or another being a semi explorive action game.
Meanwhile on computers game systems. Kirby is an great example of a
JRPG, because it was original meant for children and novice players.

This is where a platformer comes in. Take the game Vexx, ( which ownership is up for grabs ). That game looked like it was going to another Jack and Daxter, or Evildead but instead it turned into
what Conker was trying to avoid. I brought that game, discovering it was another, ohhhhhewww loook castle doors, and collect the floating oranges. However another example is Hamtaro, yes I said Hamtaro.
You basically run all over the game collecting rocks, yes fricking rocks,
to unlock what?

So what is a platformer? It is any videogame, that strolls in a linear path
and allows full movement of a character. A more recent example of a
platformer, is starfox: Adventure on the Gamecube, which you have to play, at least once, because it was just meaningless adventure featuring Starfox. That is what a platformer is.

In fact the term of platformer could also be described as a western term, for JRPG ( action game ). A comic adventure is also called a graphic adventure. So in short action, adventure, Beat Em up, platformer, JRPG are all the same thing.

Action - any game where you have movement, where you was restricted, in another senario. A game where you can venture back and forth in a sandbox.

Adventure - A game where you head in one direction

JRPG - An action game with RPG elements. Not a turn-based RPG
that is DAD but from Japan.

platformer - A game where you jump, from ledges and proceeds as the mentioned

Beat Em up - A game with fighter like graphics and procceeds like the previous mentioned.

I do not think their has ever been a Beat Em Up Platformer yet.

As I see it, he's critiquing the 'JRPG' label, and saying that the one thing that was innovated by the Japanese more than anything else was the addition of action to the RPG genre... therefore, action RPG's (Popful Mail, Ys, etc) are more accurately described as JRPG's.... Did i get that right regal?

A strong second for JJ and Jeff here! To me it has far more character and more fun gameplay than any game in the stiff, clunky Bonk series. JJ and Jeff also gives you two different characters to play the game as.

Samurai, I see the game as a cross between Wonder Boy and Super Mario 2 (lost levels)
