10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Wouldn't mind getting a Hi-Saturn, PC Engine Duo-R, PC Engine GT, Atari 2600, C64, Vectrex, FM Towns Marty and a Sharp X68000.

That would be enough to keep me happy! Could probably live without the FM Towns & 68000 though, the rest I would still like to grab.

Sucks having so many systems to get games for though, so I tend to only focus on a few different systems that I really enjoy playing.

Sega's SG-1000 was the competitor to Nintendo's Famicom. It was then updated, restyled and renamed the SG-1000 II. It received further updates, more tweaks to its appearance and was dubbed the Mark III.

PikachuWarrior

Oh okay. cool. Sega Master System was the one I missed when I was growing up. We went from the Nintendo to the Sega Genesis.

Here's a Mark III:

IMG

Pretty sexy looking and I like the controllers.

They also released an updated version of it which looks very similar to the Master System you would be used to. Main difference is that Japanese carts have a different pinout, built in FM sound, built in 3D glasses jack and rapid fire functions built into the console.

It was a totally different console?

It sure is! I really wish I could get a few more games for it, but the multicart it comes with has some super fun games! Even if they are just little mini games its such a blast if you like Pokemon.
Posting is overrated.

PikachuWarrior

I didn't even know about it until someone on Youtube got it as a pickup. It's somewhat pricey though like $60 and up. Reminds me of the Dreamcast VMU minigames.
IMG

tsuran

Mmmhmm. Back when I was A child, I saw an ad, and begged and begged my mother to get me one when she went to new york for business. I don't think they were sold anywhere in the us other than what used to be the Pokemon center up there if my memory serves me.
Posting is overrated.

yea i got a pokemini with a few carts. surprising good little system. flash carts have been made for it, and some hombrew stuff exists. just wish the scene for it was alittle bigger.

PikachuWarrior

wow, the mark III definitely looks retro. What does FM sound mean? Is it as obvious as like a higher quality bit rate or something?
IMG

Tatsujin

the normal mkIII as well our western SMS only used earhurting PSG blibb-blubb sounds, while many of the japanese supported FM (FM synthesis provided by the Yamaha chip YM-2413) as well. so when they introduced the FM, they made that add-on called FM SOUND UNIT to be piggypacked onto the mkIII. the later released JPN SMS had that FM chip already built-in.
all oversea SMS did not have that extra feature, but can be added with a FM-chip mod.

you can youtube for the differences.

also funny stuff is, that the actual oversea games do all support FM (those who were concepted for FM use), even the games that never were released within japan (like dragons trap etc.).

so there are basically two ways to play these games in FM mode. you use an adaptor which allows you to play oversea games on a japanese SMS or mkIII w/ FM unit, or you mod an oversea SMS for FM use.

Dammit man!  Thats a lot of gameboys!  I will post my consoles when I get home today.

esteban

Too many to list.

I have nearly all mainstream North American Atari, 8-bit, 16-bit, X-bit systems including 3DO... (PS2 and Wii are my most "modern" consoles at the moment). I play (rarely) Xbox360 and PS3 at my brother's.

I have all handhelds up to Gameboy Advance (first generation). No, I don't have obscurities like game.com or n-gage. No I don't have PSP.

The only Japanese consoles I have are Famicom, Super Famicom, PCE...

PLAYING:

I rotate the consoles I actively play every few weeks (1-2 months, usually). It keeps things fresh and entertaining for me.

I usually always have some variant of PCE/TG-16 hooked up, though :pcgs:

I'll play a few games, on 1-2 platforms, in-depth, for a few weeks. I much prefer this than having to manage an absolute jungle of power cords, controllers, video cables, etc. I don't have the patience or the space. I am happy :pcgs:.

Holy shit that's a lot O___O

Yeah, I wasn't bragging or nothing, I was just thinking about my crazy number of GBs.

To be honest, I don't think there's much else I want hardware wise.  Maybe a Neo Geo just for the sake of it, and a Wondermega/Multimega.  Oh and a wonderswan if I ever work out what games cost and the different variations.
