even with a docking station and a joystiq....$200 is rather pricey.

https://kotaku.com/the-neo-geo-returns-this-december-for-200-5934106

jperryss

I think it's a neat idea and it looks like a decent number of games included.  I'll admit I'm not really versed in the NG...how is that game selection compared to the overall library?

Considering that it's a full handheld console (looks like a decent build too, but who knows) plus a home dock and an arcade stick, it seems a little pricey but not "WTF" priced. To me anyway.

JoshTurboTrollX

I thought originally it was rumored to be twice that much, so $200 doesn't actually sound too bad.

I wonder if it's an advanced console that they could make new games for as well.

Sengoku 4 anyone!??!

neo geo always costs more. not too bad but still pricey. will it plug into the tv if you wanted?
I want to be more like 337.

According to the article, yes. Looks like the handheld plugs into a dock which has a video-out to hook up to the TV.

let the french gobble it up!

The docking station supposedly has TV out yes.

If the emulation is accurate and the joysticks of decent quality, that doesn't look so bad for getting into NeoGeo legitimately.  The portable part does nothing for me, though, as most titles are more fun two-player.

I would love to own something neo geo because of the awesome games! But what the fuck...
I really like video games...

beside that that thing never will see the real sunlight, I don't consider all the stuff for 200 bucks anything just near to "pricey".

I don't see how this is expensive at all. You get a full joystick with the damned thing even.

The big question is if its actually a piece of junk or not. Will the emulation be good? Will the stick be badly made? And the big one, is it possible to add games? I'm much more worried about that than the price, and I already have an MVS.
IMG

PunkCryborg

If it has AV out and I can play more games I will probably get one. This would b perfect to take over to a friends house or on vacation and plug into a TV to play some magical drop in the hotel.

geise

Oh shit!  I thought the console/docking station and classic style controller were just there for the image.  That's actually not that bad, but if you already own a ps3, wii, 360, laptop with tv-out, this is kinda pointless.  So you can play the games on the go with the neo-geo x, and when you get home just pop it in the console?  It's a nifty idea. This has been talked about months ago, but I thought it was just the handheld.  Is this actually by SNK Playmore?

SignOfZeta

How much would those games cost all together as Virtual Console/PSN releases?

Also, for comparison, an AES with no games is worth at least $150, and it certainly doesn't have HDMI output.

Unless this thing has something wrong with it, I'm totally getting one.
IMG

PunkCryborg

hopefully it has the clicky dpad like the NGPC

jperryss

$200 might seem a bit steep, but this could be might be winner for someone who has never owned NG stuff and wants to experience it without shelling out, let's face it, a buttload of money, on a system and games. Especially if space is at a minimum and they don't have room for a bunch of giant carts. As a bonus, it doubles as a handheld system for on-the-go playing.

Many of these games might be available on the Wii VC, but the arcade stick is where it's at, and how many people have one for their Wii?

Ignoring the current prices of AES systems and carts for a minute, how much does just a consolized MVS go for?

I'll be curious to see if they offer more games for it down the road. I also think a big part of the value will come down to the build quality. The fact that it appears to be official hardware, as opposed to some cheap Yobo knock-off like those portable NES/SNES units, could be a good sign.

Nando

its got an SD card and it may or may not connect to NeoGeo station service.

I bet you they sell it with a mini joystiq replica, not a full sized one.

bob

Just buy the neo geo comp for ps2 or Xbox. $20. Done.
The games were never that good IMO.

It varies. If you go high end with the Analogue Interactive, it'll set you back quite a bit. If you get a less extravagant one, it can cost less.

I got lucky and got a consolized 4 slot for $400 earlier this year. If you aren't such a huge Neo Geo fan as I am, I wouldn't recommend any CMVS or AES, though.

This new Neo Geo X sounds interesting. I doubt I'll get it this year, but if the word of mouth is good, maybe I'll get it next year.

SNK was selling full size AES sticks for PS2 just a few years ago. If they wanted to sell a full sized one they certainly could. I like the AES stick quite a bit, it's not exactly a HRAP or anything. It's not that expensive to make.

Btw, for comparison, the final US home carts were selling for over $350 each when they were released. Now does $200 seem like a lot? Also, the 3DS XL will be $200 when it comes out as well, and thats guaranteed to sell millions of units so Nintendo gets a volume discount these guys can only dream about. An unsubsidized iPhone is $700.

Btw, Tommo still exists?

Also, I assume this picture isn't to scale. If it is then the portable Neo will be HUGE. I'd be fine with that, personally.

I'm very excited about this, Be awesome to play Neo Geo games on the go then be able to play on the home TV. I was one of those kids that always wanted a Neo Geo but my parents wasent gonna drop $1000 on a system and games. So to me this is the only way to finally own one. Besides I'm curious how much new games will run or what games will be released at system launch Dec 6.

$200 really isn't sounding bad to me, maybe it's the nostalgia of the Neo Geo? :-k

jlued686

I bet the emulation scene will get on this. TurboGrafx games on this? I'm in.

cabbage

Any technical info on this? Is it just some rebranded dingoo or similar, emulating the neogeo, or did they clone the hardware?

I'm guessing it's just an average emulator with a (cheap) plastic shell to interface with a TV and some flimsy joysticks. The shape of the console/joys and neo geo logos all over everything will justify the $200 price long enough for them to turn a profit.

GameFreak

This is made by Tommo Inc which has partnered with SNK to make this device. So in a weird way, it is an official SNK neo-geo product.

I am excited for this and will definitely get one if the build quality is high.  I just wish that there was a way to play two players when hooked to a TV.  I am guessing that the portable unit needs to dock in the system, which would mean you could not use it for controller #2?

^exactly what i was thinking also. Im sure they sell extra controllers for $$. I see 2 controller ports on the dock. I think the whole point of the dock is 2 player mode.

Time will tell, but with the hdmi and AV-out are on the top of the portable device than you would have to insert it upside down in the dock which might seem/look odd. And even the SNK logo on the back battery cover would be upside down. Maybe the battery cover can go on either way, but in the pic it would stick out upside down. I'm guessing you just stick the device where the cart slot is. It doesn't look like it would fit from the pic, but each of those accessories may not be in scale to each other in that pic.

I want to see more!

Yes, the Neo Geo is renowned for how shitty its games are. That's why it only lasted 14 years and why they could only get $200-360 per cart.

Yes, apparently others liked it.  But they dont quite pass the test of time.  This unit is definately ambitious and even holds a bit of 90s charm with the bulky dock and joystick. But really, SNK couldnt get out of thier own way in the first place and this thing has such a limited audience it just seems like a waste. From a business perspective.

Are you serious, or are you just shitting around? I ask because to me SNKs arcade titles from this period are some of the best games in existence. I still like Super Baseball 2020 more than any sports game made, and I like League Bowling so much that even though I have the MVS cart I bought the PSN version just to get the multiplayer. I can't imagine how someone on a Turbo forum wouldn't like Neo Geo. They tend to be the same audience, and if anything I would say that SNK games age better than Turbo stuff. The Neo probably has the best quality-to-crap ratio of any system in history.

The reason the stick is "bulky" isn't for nostalgia, it's because that's how your supposed to play these games.

As far as this thing goes from a business perspective, yes, SNK is not Nintendo. What's your point?

THE TRUTH ABOUT NEO GEO: Neo Geo has been (and always will be) the playground of poseurs who, desperately, attempt to prove how "hardcore" and sincere their passion is. Sadly, these poseurs simply have a fetish for STOUT, STOCKY and CHUNKY hardware. It has been said that a NeoGeo fan will dismiss a game based solely on the technical specifications of its platform/hardware. Also, Neo Geo fans willingly play World Heroes. I kid you not. It is, as they say, the Truth. You like sports games? Yes? Good, because Neo Geo has them. Lots of them. Fighting games, an underwhelming subgenre of Genus Sporticus, are-a-dime-a-dozen on SNK's sloppy, fat machine. NEO GEO IS THE BBW OF THE VIDEO GAME COSMOS. That said, I will gladly accept your sloppy seconds. PM me. :pcgs:
