2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

I did, bought it new at Toys R Us back in the day.
Never cared much for it from what I remember, but once my kids were old enough to play it, they liked it.
Then my Turbo and all the games went through a decade + of non use, but I was content enough to sit on them. Fairly financially secure, so never really had the need to sell, and I figured some day I'd use it again.
Fast forward to around 2008 or 9, I checked ebay turbo listings out of curiosity, and was shocked to see MC going for $300-$400. I saved all my boxes and manuals, so I threw my complete MC on ebay, and indeed got somewhere between $300-$400 for it. I've often wondered how many times it has been flipped since then, and how much $$ has been made just from this one game.

I have an achieve of pics of things I listed on ebay going back years ... I remember I took pics of the game and box, and also of my TV playing the game to show that it worked. Haven't been able to find those, but am still searching.
Am I correct in guessing that MC was made towards the end, and was shipped in very limited numbers ?
[Tried to create a basic "Yes or No" poll here, didn't see a poll option].

To answer the topic question. Yes, I have it.

It was made towards the end and shipped in fewer numbers than most releases. However, the main reason it's so valuable isn't the number produced, but rather the number of copies destroyed when TTI was liquidating assets. Most of the copies got run over by a steamroller.

meka

I've got the Japanese version that I bought about 5 years ago, the last US one I saw on ebay sold for almost $3000.

reno5

Nope and never seen one in action.

TG16 died here in my area before the Turbo Duo came out. Firts saw a Turbo Duo in Quebec city when searching for TG16 games at Radio Shack.

We didn't had Toy's R Us here and when we finally got one it didn't last long. (6 years or so)

Nazi NecroPhile

Nope, never owned one (except for the stack in the garage).  Perhaps I will someday, but I'm not too worried about it.

I bought it new bitd and immediately tore it open and played it on my Express. I've been playing it ever since.

csgx1

I owned the PCE version about 8 years ago and only acquired it because of a good deal on a lot.  A decent game, but it was never on my 'to buy' list of games.  I never really cared too much about MC back in the day or even now.  If in the future I come across a US MC for, lets say $20, great....if not, then no big deal.

Good on ya! that's what games are for :)

Personally, i've never owned one...and when i do it'll be for the PCE anyways since i don't own a T16 anymore.

Flare65

Bought it new when I worked at Electronics Boutique back in the day.  Sold it in the late 90's on ebay while I was in college.  Wish I didn't.  I remember getting about 60.00 for it back then.  I'f I had only known...... at least I kept my copies of Bonk 3 and Soldier Blade.

roflmao

I've never owned it, but I have to admit it was one of the first games I tried out when my huflash card arrived yesterday. :D  I really dig it!  It's a shame I'll never officially have it in my library.

ChrisBucci

I hear you on that!!

I picked my copy up in the year 2000 when I was trying to complete my U.S. TG16 collection (needed about twenty more).  Paid $85.00 complete without box.  I remember back then saying, "Wow, well...if I want to get everything I'll have to shell out a bit more here".   Little did I know.

I enjoy the game.  I did the video review of it quite early just so I had proof in case someone stole it from me.  'cause I wouldn't be buying another today.  Ha ha!

Yes i have it, Got mine at a estate sale a few years back (7 years maybe i dont remember) But i paid around $350 for a box of Duo stuff. System and a bunch of games. Was looting thru it and almost jizzed in my pants and remember telling the lady would you come down on the box of games she came down $25 or $30 bucks lol.

I enjoy MC but its not as awesome as some of the other shooters on the TG16.

BlueBMW

I own a loose pc engine copy.  Paid $75 for it.

I remember seding US MC for around $300 or so back when I started getting really heavy into games (2001-2003 or so)  I thought that was too much back then.  Still too much, but I do think MC is a great game.  I think some of the dislike for it comes from its cost and hype that surrounds it.

Bought it used circa 1996, sold it privately about 7 years ago.

I have never personally owned it, but I have two friends who do.  One owns the JP version and the other (who lives in Pennsylvania) owns the US version.  I've borrowed both copies.  Yes, the US version has to travel through the mail.  But legitimate copies of both the JP and US versions of the game have penetrated and had full on sex with my TurboGrafx-16.

Dan, I haven't heard that one before.  What was TTI doing putting down asphalt if they were going out of business?  Any chance those chaseseses are buried under that parking lot?

I bought my copy (hucard+manual) 6-7 years ago on eBay. I've since added a beautiful case with one of Sparky's sticker.  :D

The prices were crazy but nowhere near what they are today. I played it a lot and still do: while it's not the best one on the system, it's still a great shooter!

I'll have to try it on a emu and see if I get dejavoo ... Alls I remember is riding around on a broomstick with some protective stars shooting everything in sight.

There's a thread about this (in fact several) elsewhere on the forum. When TTI went under any assets that weren't purchased by liquidators was destroyed. Their primary liquidator was TZD who bought up several hundred thousand dollars worth of merchandise. However, they paid based on the manufacturing costs of the items in question. So HuCards cost more to keep than CDs since they were more expensive to manufacture. When deciding what to keep, late release HuCard games like Bonk 3 (mascot of the system), Darkwing Duck (licensed Disney character), and Order of the Griffon (D&D licensed) were kept in large numbers while games like Magical Chase, Tonma and World Sports Competition were the games that were most likely to be steamrolled as they weren't thought to be as sellable as Bonk 3 of the licensed titles.

This was news to me.  A lump came to my throat, and tears almost welled up in my eyes when I read this sad tale of woe and destruction.

Not disputing this version, but how would this explain Bonk 3,  Order of the Griffon and Darkwing Duck all being "premium" games ?

It depends on how you mean premium games. All of those games can be found for under 100.00 if you look long enough without a manual. They also show up for sale far more frequently than Magical Chase or Tonma.

Added In Edit: I should probably elaborate that more Bonk 3's were produced than say Magical Chase, World Sports or Tonma. And that a lot less were destroyed because they were thought to be easier to sell. The same with Order of the Griffon and Darkwing Duck though those were likely produced in smaller numbers than Bonk 3. Where Tonma and Magical Chase both go 100+, Bonk 3 does occasionally but is the mascot of the system and a more desirable game.

So as an example this is just a speculative number 3,000 Darkwing Duck, Order of the Griffon, World Sports Competition, Legend of Hero Tonma and Magical Chase HuCards were produced. All Darkwing Duck and Order of the Griffons were kept because being a licensed title they were thought to be easier to sell. World Sports Competition came out around Spring of 1993, so a year later when shipments were sent back 2/3 or 3/4 of the WSCs had already been sold to the public at large and only a few hundred were destroyed, a lot but likely only around 15% of the total number produced. Tonma shipped a little later, say around early Summer after delays. And maybe half were sent back, TZD only kept 100 to sell, maybe the Canadian liquidator kept 50. So a little less than half of those were likely to be destroyed. Magical Chase was out even less time, while the TTI catalog said it was supposed to come out in July, it likely came out around September or October as many of those dates proved to be months late (Vasteel was listed as having come out in April for example, when it shipped in June per Working Designs old site). So of 3,000 (and it may have been less) produced 2/3 to 3/4 might have been destroyed leaving only what sold while it was in stores plus the 100 TZD bought and whatever the Canadian liquidator bought.

These aren't solid numbers but are a pretty good guess at what happened.

I'm not sure what you're asking exactly. Basically all of the '92-93 Turbochips (the ones with plastic trays) are "premium" games... except Falcon, because it sucks.

Anyway, we've been over this before. Please read the linked thread.
Dan's basically regurgitating my argument, except he's including OotG, which doesn't really compare to the others titles because it was released a year earlier and had plenty of shelf time in big box retailers. Magical Chase and Bonk were the last Turbochips. Apparently 1600 copies of MC were destroyed. Read my big explosion in page 12 and Jayamine's response for more specifics:

I only included OotG because it's name comes up a lot, and it was a licensed title and possibly not destroyed. I suspect far more copies of it were produced than the 1993 releases. I also get the sense that maybe 2,000 copies of Magical Chase, Tonma and World Sports Competition were produced, not say 3,000. And that whatever those quantities those games were produced in Bonk 3 Huey had at least double the number manufactured.

Appreciate the insights guy, I realize this may have been hashed out before, its not something I ever really thought about until now.
In any collectibles market, the old "supply & demand" always reigns supreme ,,, But there are other variables to consider as well in the case of Hucards.
I do have Hero Tonma in my collection, so its somewhat of a gem, especially since its complete. I'll browse some of the previous threads for further insight.
