2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

In response to the thread title - I'm still playing on the Wii. I came LTTP to this generation. I've been a gamer since the days of the Atari 2600 but mainly stopped playing (except on rare occasions) from about 2001 to 2009 while my kids were young. I have a Wii and an Xbox 360 now but the Wii gets a lot more use by me and the rest of the family.

Right now I'm waiting on my pre-order of The Last Story and I just recently picked up Xenoblade which I'm loving. My youngest daughter loves it too but her attention span on games is kinda short. A few weeks ago she was crazy about Metroid Prime 3 but only got maybe 10% complete before moving on to some kids online game.

When I can't get to the TV I'm playing through my old copy of Dragon Slayer on my laptop.

meka

What's a Wii? Nintendo have been going downhill as a company since the SNES.

wilykat

I think it's later than SNES. ;)  N64 with OoT and MM were pretty good.

Robknoxious1

Quote from: meka on 08/07/2012, 03:56 AMWhat's a Wii? Nintendo have been going downhill as a company since the SNES.
Well it was the sales leader this gen by a pretty large margin. And as far as the company goes they probably made more profit on just the balance board for Wii Fit than MS made off of Xbox, Xbox 360 and Kinect combined. Before I here "fanboy" screamed I own a 360 and a PS2.

Really if you're a fan of Nintendo's games there was probably more to love off Wii this gen than any other previous console (don't forget the Virtual Console and GameCube compatibility).

meka

Wii is the most profitable console of this gen is because there are a lot more "casual" gamers than "hardcore". The 3DS is a gimmick that was first tried in the 80s with the NES and SMS. Wii Fit is not a game and the virtual console is not the real thing, the original xbox can play all those games if you like emulators.

Robknoxious1

It's well known that the "casual" gamer was the key to Wii's success and profitability. I mentioned the balance board to simply illustrate how much $$$ Nintendo made compared to the other consoles this gen. A comment was made about Nintendo going downhill as a company. While the reference probably was aimed at the content more than the profitability, you can't deliver any content if you are out of business. A Turbografx site should know this better than most.

As far as content, there were plenty of quality Nintendo titles on the Wii (if you like Mario, Kirby, Zelda and Donkey Kong. Not everyone does.) Still does my Xbox 360 have more hardcore titles than my Wii. Yup. I still end up playing the Wii more though. Heck recently I've been playing my TG-16 more than 360. Go figure.

As far as the 3DS it may be a gimmick but Vita is not doing well whatever reason.

meka

I'm only interested in the games, and when I compare the games that came out after the SNES to before I much prefer the latter, but your right that it you can not make the consumer happy then your stuffed.

motdelbourt

I never bought a PS3/360, but I have a ton of Wii games, and I'm only a few hours into Xenoblade Chronicles.

I'd have to admit there are some good PS3/360 games, but not the popular ones. It's all generic sepia toned FPS. Or they throw in a few fantasy elements and call it an RPG.

esteban

I still haven't delved into the Wii library much, but jlued created a thread in the last year or two detailing TONS of promising games on the Wii.

Where's that link? :pcgs:

The crap:quality ratio is bad on ALL CONSOLES, as far as I'm concerned. This doesn't mean the Wii doesn't offer a bunch of compelling games. Of course, if you are primarily interested in specific genres/trends (FPS), then I can see why the Xbox360/PS3 libraries are more compelling.

Wii are not playing the Wii anymore...

too many old school games to play on the real hardware and too little time. So I stick on my TG16 - PC Engine games for now

You know it's a little known fact that a person could get a lot more enjoyment out of a console once it's removed from the box and connected to a TV. There are plenty of truly great games for the Wii that could be enjoyed after this is accomplished.

Was there also a lot of junk? Yeah. Tell me one system that had a large software library that didn't. Was the Wii trash to treasure ratio worse than other systems. Probably yes because of larger than average amount of "casual" gamers. Still there's this thing called the internet. Use it and just grab the great stuff.

I'd rather just play my Duo, the games for the Wii itself were mostly trash. It really pissed me off that I needed a disc to access Netflix, and the "virtual store" where you can download old games is a complete scam to charge extra money to the people who don't frequent forums like these.

In the effort to achieve peace, love and harmony:

Wii's "Netflix on a disc" was a work-around due to contractual issues. It was less-than-ideal, but the alternative would have been to WAIT EVEN LONGER before Netflix was available on Wii.

That's cool. I'm playing Dragon Slayer today and have been for a couple weeks when I have time. I also play Xenoblade when I can get to the TV.

Answering in order: Yeah. A lotta shovelware on Wii but that in no way makes the great games that was available less great. I use my Blu Ray player for Netflix but would rather use a disc on my Wii than have to pay for a gold account like my fellow Xbox 360 owners (just an example). As for the VC being a scam I would just say that while I'm not against emulators (I use one to play my old TG-16 CD's on my lap top) I don't think you can label the VC a scam for letting the legal copyright holder sell their games to those that would rather buy them for reasons of their own.

Fair enough though like you point out it was an expensive and comparatively niche console.

Look in the end people are gonna love and hate what they choose. They like something because they want to and the hate something because they want to. Most won't change their minds no matter what. They'd rather miss out on the stuff they might like than quit hating on it. Human Nature.

I picked up Cursed Mountain the other day, so yeah, I still play my Wii from time to time.  I bought Zelda Skyward Sword....and ehhhh.....just cant get into it... I wish they had included the ability to choose normal controls instead of being forced to look like a jack-ass playing it.  Not everyone wants to be forced to use motion controls.  Its nice and all, but it is a shame that Nintendo did not think about all the players when they made a Zelda game...
How is cursed mountain?

Played a little Mario Bros Wii with my youngins' this past weekend.  It still has some life left in it.  Pretty great time.

BTW- For those with Netflix and a Wii, the newest Netflix update doesn't need the disc anymore.  And it's pretty excellent with some nice features.... Still doesn't beat out having it built into the TV, but it's pretty nice to have in a kids room.  :D

None of the updates need the CD. You can't update CDs. The first update was "you no longer need the CD". The most recent updated added a kids version of Netflix.

As for Netflix built into TVs, in all seriousness its probably better that you have it for a console or an Apple TV or something. All hardware eventually gets abandoned. Which do you think is going to get left out of the next Netflix update, the PS3 with its 63 million users or some random model of TV that only 10,000 people ever owned?

As for all the bullshit with people showing us their hardcore gamer badge by saying they hate the Wii so much they never turn it on...just give it a rest, seriously. That's one very worn out cliche at this point. There are H@rd3C0R3 mofos on every forum of the internet giving the same tired shit. We get it, now please shut up.

Last month my girlfriend and I beat New Super Mario Bros co-op for the second time, so I guess I'm still playing it.

Yup, Xenoblade is already a hard to find game. I actually saw a copy of it today at a gamestop. Might want to check your local ones. Also I just finished playing Muramasa a week ago. I surprised my kids with one right after launch.  I took the day off just to scour the town and find one for them.  Managed to stop at a Best Buy right as the truck pulled in with some.  Hooked it up and left it running for the kids to see when they walked in the door from school.  They loved it for about a few months then never turned it on again.  It sat until my mom (shes in her 60s) saw it and wanted to try Wii Fit, so I gave it to her.  Took it over her house, showed her how to work it and it's never been turned on again since then. It's been YEARS since it's been turned on.  Maybe I'll give her a call and see if she's still using it... lol
All is well. :)
