Hello everyone! I am the Sma Man, but most call me... Sma Man.

I just got a PC Engine last week, and it's been loads of fun! 'Cept my Japanese is a little rusty so it's been difficult learning how to play some of these games. Retro gaming has always been a hobby of mine, so I thought I'd join a community of like minded individuals.

Hah! Well I did once find a Sega CD game I lost 7 years prior in my garage. It was Stellar Fire, so not too terribly rare/good, but it was a fun evening.

I'd imagine it wouldn't be too implausible to find a HuCard in someone's wallet... which would be even more morally conflicting for turning it in vs. keeping it.

When I got my PC Engine, I also decided to try and track down 5 of the lowest priced games I could find stateside to get me started. And those are:

• Power League
• Moto Roader
• Power Tennis
• Super Volley Ball
• Fire Pro Wrestling 3: Legend Bout

So yeah, mostly sports games, but I do have Dragon Spirit coming in the mail any day now.  

That's also a problem though. Especially control wise, sports games aren't as self-explanatory as a shmup or side-scroller or what not. I've got them mostly figured out except for Fire Pro Wrestling. I read that a lot of the throws, specials, and the like are done through sequential button presses to discourage button mashing, but since I have no basis on how they work, or any sort of example, that's all I've been able to do.

Hopefully you can save up some dough and get a nice region-modded, s-video-modded PC Engine Duo and some better non-sports games.

I already did a little browsing through the PCE sales section. Looks like some great stuff! But I need to pace myself a bit, wait for another paycheck or two to come in after dropping over $100 on the PC Engine and its games.

Speaking of, I'm looking to one day get a TG16 or at least an adapter/region mod to play the U.S. games. Any suggestions on which one I should go after?

Haha, nope. I'm not looking into selling this stuff... yet. Mostly I do it when I get a redundant game from a wholesale lot of some sort, or find one in better condition, w/box, etc.

That said I do have an extra copy of Tecmo Super Bowl for the Genesis...

Get a region-modded, s-video-modded PC Engine Duo or Duo-R from One of the modders here on the forum like Keith Courage.  I got mine from him, and it's great!  In the long run, this system setup (with an Arcade Card Duo) will allow you to play the entire TurboGrafx-16 library and the entire PC Engine library (not counting the 5 Super HuCards which will only play on the SuperGrafx).

(2) Ha! I think many of us have grabbed as many budget titles as possible when $$$ is low. Why else would I have a soccer game? (NOTE: I don't think I actually have a soccer game because I'd never play it).
(3) Of those games: MotoRoader can be fun if you get into it (but is probably more fun with friends). I actually like the strategic aspect of MotoRoaer (how best to upgrade car given the $$$ you have from winning races). You can even be a chump and use weapons/special items to secure a better finish (timing is not easy, though). I don't know, MR certainly has its flaws (if you are the lead car you have to have excellent reflexes, and even then folks can use weapons), but it is a game that can grow on you.
(4) Dragon Spirit: Some folks think it can be sluggish, which is true, but it's a damn fine game. I'm probably in the minority, but I would argue that Dragon Spirit can hold its own vs. the sequel (Dragon Saber). Most folks would assert that Saber is superior in all respects. Saber is great, but it does not make Spirit irrelevant. FUTURE PURCHASE: If you like shoot-em-ups, Dragon Saber is great.
(5) Since I have peculiar tastes, I wouldn't be surprised if you had the most fun with Fire Pro Wrestling (once you figure out the moves).

Believe it or not, I'm having the most fun with Power League. (which was released in the US as World Class Baseball) It was probably the easiest to figure out, even though I've only managed to win one game so far. It's reminds me of Neo Geo's Baseball Stars.

I'm also liking Moto Roader. (I think I inherited my love of racing games from my dad) It reminds me of this Auto Racing game I used to play on Intellivision. It was top down, and whenever a racer got far enough ahead off the screen (and given the difficult controls, that was no easy task) the game would say "AHEAD!" and give points to the driver in front, then bring both of them back to the middle of the screen further down the track. That said, it was a lot more fun to just go offroad and explore the pixelated landscape.

(5) Since I have peculiar tastes, I wouldn't be surprised if you had the most fun with Fire Pro Wrestling (once you figure out the moves).

This looks like a game I'd love to play. I have Kinnikuman Tournament (or whatever it's called) on Famicom and have had fun with that on occasions. I like Fire Pro's tongue-in-cheek references to real world wrestlers. (True story: I used to be a fairly big fan of wrestling in the mid 90s) I just feel like if I could get one example on how a move is supposed to work on the controller, I'd at least be on the right track. It's kind of like how one day I finally figured out how to throw hadokens in Street Fighter II', and today it's one of my favorite games of all time!

1. Hmmmmm... I don't think I played that Intellivision game. Hmmmmm....I gotta check it out. I like all the old skool games (Bump n Jump)
2. There are a bunch of wrestling fans here, but I suspect a non-wrestling fan who knows Japanese could help you figure out all the moves.
