2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

I'm having trouble accessing the debug mode in this game. According to this link, you have to "Enable the "Sound test" code. Press I, II then tap Select repeatedly until the debug screen appears. The following debug functions may now be enabled." I can access the Sound Mode easily, but I'm getting no sign of the debug mode.

Nevermind I figured it out. For those having the same problem, a debug message or menu doesn't actually appear. After pressing I and II in the sound test screen, press Select a bunch of times and then go to a specific number for whatever debug option you want to do.

actually, the code may not work on the Japanese version - I know that the american codes for Super Star Soldier do not work on the Japanese game.

nat

Just as there are codes for Dragon's Curse that only work on the Japanese region cart. A lot of codes seem to be region-independent, for whatever reason.

Very interesting. Hopefully it works then, Tatsujin.

While we are on the discussion of Blazing Lazers, can anyone give me a clear explanination on how the purple orb things (or gel capsules whatever they call them in the manual) work? The instruction manual says how collecting them powers up your weapon so many times, but do these orbs allow you to continue from where you died as well? I've had this discussion a few times but I never really got a clear answer on how many orbs it takes to allow you to continue. I would assume around 10, but that could easily be wrong.

I think you'll be able to find my old post (if it was here and not magicengine). The purple gels are only for powering up. The blinking gels, that make everything on the screen blow-up: those give you one credit to "continue without reverting to checkpoint." I  collect tons of the blinking gels during the course of a game, but I'm not sure if there is a limit to how many you keep "in reserve." All I know  is that I've purposefully killed myself repeatedly to see if I would be sent back to a checkpoint, but I don't think I ever was.

Unfortunately, I can't recall how many credits I had at the time (8? 10? 12?).

I have never read about this anywhere (online or offline) ... so it would be nice if folks could confirm how this undocumented feature actually works.

Thanks a lot for the info, Steve! That seems to make a lot of sense then, but yes anyone who can confirm this would be even better. I tried searching from that thread you mentioned before I made this one, but had no luck finding it (was a rather brief search to be honest). That thread had some good info in it.

As Steve has correctly mentioned, the purple orbs are just for powering up your weapon. Basically a huge amount of them (I don't know the exact number) have the same effect as one orb with the Roman number of your weapon, therefore you don't really need them for powering up. The blinking ones allow you to continue on spot without being reset. I will count them the next time I play the game since I don't know if you have to collect multiple blinkers to get one continue and if there's a limit.

I haven't played the game in years, but I'm pretty certain 1 blinker = 1 continue. I remember experimenting to try to figure out how it worked. I was playing one of the harder modes (godhead?) and dying a lot... those blinkers actually come in handy in the harder modes!

It will be awesome if you could determine if there is a limit to the number of blinkers you can keep in reserve (well, you can only test this in relation to the total number of credits you can acquire).

Just tried performing the debug mode on Gunhed and it didn't work :( . I wasn't even able to get to the sound mode, which makes sense since the title screen is completely different from Blazing Lazers.

Very good info, thanks. I think you left something important out though and that is once you collect so many purple orbs, a orb with the Roman number of your weapon will come down BUT you can actually shoot these orbs until they explode and become a blinking orb :) . Now it looks like we're really getting somewhere with this orb system :D . I guess all we have to figure out now is how many purple orbs it takes to receive a Roman Numeral / Blinking orb.

I played the game yesterday and can confirm that each blinker gives you one continue. I got 9 of them and wasn't reset 9 times. Unfortunately I'm a little out of practice and couldn't collect more of them but I will try again. I think if there is a limit it's going to be 16 blinkers, the same number as the bombs'.

Since I was playing the game I could have tried the debug mode on the japanese version as well but I forgot

Awesome, that's great info, thanks! I was also playing the game recently to see how many purple orbs it takes for a blinking orb to come down and it's hard to get an exact number. The first time I encountered a blinking orb in the first level took about 17 purple orbs, but this might not be accurate because these blinking orbs don't come down immediately. I should also mention that these blinking orbs are sent down from a green version of the little ship that sends you items.

The debug mode does work on the japanese version as well. The same goes for most of the other cheats on the site Keranu's has provided in his first post. However, don't try to do the Invincibility cheat on Gunhed since your screen will become green and starts to flicker as hell leaving you no other choice than power off your system.

I'm pretty sure Gunhed has most or all of BL's tricks and maybe even more.

I had a japanese site with PCE tricks bookmarked, but I just found that it's no longer up.

Looking at one of my PCE trick books, it looks like Gunhed does have an Invincibility Mode, but I haven't been able to completely decipher the trick. It looks like you enter 57 at the debug screen and then push Down, even though pressing Down crashes the game.

Would anyone fluent in japanese like to translate this-

You don't have to, just take a look at Keranu's first post and the link there. The cheats do work for Blazing lazers as well as Gunhed except for the Invincibility cheat as I mentioned in my previous post. I tested them a few hours ago. No need for brute force! :D

I originally misread an earlier post on my way out the door and thought that no one had been able to get into the debug mode.

See my last post for the invincibility trick.

Keranu, at the intro just hold Select down, then press Left then Right alternately (10 times) until you enter the Sound Test.

EDIT: I just got the trick to work. You're supposed to reset once the game crashes and then start a just game and you'll have invincibility. Select + Run wouldn't work, so I just used Magic Engine's reset feature to get it to work. Maybe on real hardware you need to quickly turn the power off and back on to do it. I'd try it myself, but I don't own Gunhed and am too lazy to put it on my flash card.

Alright, I just tried Gunhed on my PCE using my flash card and I got the invincibility trick to work both with 57 and 77, by pressing Up then Down as the BL trick works.

The only thing is, the game is also running in slow mo and the intro & title screen were slightly glitchy.

Maybe the slowdown is a bug from using the flashcard?

Keranu, the Sound Test trick was impossible for me to do using my thumb. I had to use two fingers to on the d-pad to get it to work.

EDIT: For whatever reasons, I've never played Blazing Lazers or Gunhed before. After trying out those tricks, I reset and tried out the first level just to see what the game is like. I wound up getting sucked in and just finished the game without dying.  :D

I was impressed by myself... until I hit Run at the title screen after the credits to see if anything had been unlocked. Since it just entered the regular game again, I started this post. After noticing how long the music was playing, I looked over to see that the invincibility tricked was still active, even though I'd just played through the game without the slowdown.

BUT! I never lost my shields the entire game and I just tested it out and you don't die unless your shields completely disappear and you then you take a hit. So as far as I'm concerned, I really did finish the game without dying.  :D

I tried to repeat the invincibility trick, but couldn't get the second part of the trick to work and reset. Now I can't get the Sound Test trick to work on either my Gunhed loaded flash card or Blazing Lazers Turbochip.  :( But my current theory is that you perform the invincibilty trick as described above and then reset the slo mo game to play at full speed.

I have some questions for people who have more experience with these games.

Is it normal for the occassional power up to get hooked on your shot and sometimes stay in one spot for a long time? I saw this happen while trying out Super Star Soldier on Wii and thought that it was probably a bug.

Was that lady kept as part of the last boss in the U.S., version?

At the 'The End' screen after a while I picked the control pad off of the floor and suddenly 'Select A/B' appeared at the bottom right corner of the screen, in the same font as 'The End', but after hesitating to push any buttons, it then disappeared. What the hell is that?
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

Cool stuff, Black_tiger!

Actually I usually use this method whenever I access the Sound Mode on Blazing Lazers too, it's a lot easier.

Yep.

Yes, that's completely normal and no bug at all. These power ups switch between the weapons (I - IV) or the missiles (S,M,F,H). As long as you shoot at them, the display weapon is on hold and you can get it if you want. However, if you keep shooting at it, it will eventually change into a blinker who clears the screen and gives you a continue which means you can restart from where you are once you die and don't have to go back to the last checkpoint. These blinkers exist in Super Star Soldier as well, with the same purpose.
