2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

Quote from: Koa Zo on 09/17/2013, 03:43 PMI've never seen this addressed: what is a "journalistic review"?

This CGR guy doesn't seem to have any journalistic knowledge, credentials, or ability. He doesn't do simple background research on many of his topics, his shares his opinions and sometimes misinformation is all. That is not journalism.

edit: oh I see he no longer prefaces his videos with that "A Journalistic Review" nonsense.
I have always wondered if this was a joke...I think it was always intended to be tongue-in-cheek, because he goofs around and doesn't take anything too seriously.

I have always thought that he meant that mostly as a joke.  Note how now it says "The cure for the corporate review" -- kind of a new way of saying the same thing.  It's probably part dig at the questionable quality of a lot of professional game reviewing, too... not sure on that point though.

However, Mark has been doing internet game reviews on and off since 1999.  First person on the internet to do a video review show, apparently... or at least that's what he's said before on the show.  Even if you are absolutely right that he doesn't research the games he's reviewing enough and thus often doesn't mention a lot of important information, he's been doing this for a long time, and that's got to be a "journalistic" qualification of some kind for sure!

How long have you 2 been married?  Your dedication is an amazing example of love trumping all!
NW: Hey, I made it on this psycho's Enemies' List, how about that ?? ;)
BT: Look at how the fake SFII' carts instantly sold out and were immediately listed on eBay before the flippers even took possession. Look at Nintendo's overpriced bricks. Look at the typical forum discussions elsewhere. You can't tell most retro gamers anything!

I've been subscribed to his Youtube channel for some years now, and have probably watched most all of its videos.  They're definitely not all good, but enough are that I definitely find it worth continuing to watch.  That is not the case with Undertow, I often skip those...

As for the questions about free stuff, yeah, I'm sure he could buy that stuff himself, but I can understand how people who have been receiving lots of free stuff wouldn't feel the need to bother, when they get so much stuff sent to them for free... he probably has to buy the modern games they review, though, unless they're sent press copies.

I'll also start a Youtube VLOG, so please send games and consoles as of now :)

WTF is CGR Undertow? I tried watching one of the videos... Burger Time... and it was just poorly captured footage with some very upset guy yelling and screaming about how much the game sucks. It wasn't even edited, just some guy talking over uninterrupted gameplay. How lazy is that? I couldn't finish watching it.

Bloufo

I guess then CGR Undertow doesn't qualify as a "journalistic review" either?

It sure has not the product value of a game sack.

I would love to know how much ad revenue CGR generates. I know that the only folks who make any decent money are the ones with THE BIG NUMBERS (subscribers, views, viewing time, desirable demographics of viewers, etc.). It seems that CGR might make some $$$, but how much? And how many hours does CGR invest in creating content?

CGQuarterly

As I understand it, the average is about $2.50 per 1,000 views, but there are too many variables at play to really nail it down.  I have no doubt that he is making a full-time income off of YT, but remember that it comes with NO benefits.  Making YT videos is fun, and if you can make some scratch on the side then that's awesome, but I sure wouldn't want my mortgage payment to depend on it.

PunkCryborg

A Black Falcon

Yeah, I'm sure he makes money, but he's got nowhere remotely near the level of views of the top Youtube gaming channels, unfortunately, so it's surely a lot less than the top channels.  Whatever any of them make, I don't know.

YT has a metric for how long folks watch a video...plus more sophisticated measures...I know advertisers care a lot about the demographics of the audience because they want to target advertisements.

Not all age/gender/race-ethnicity/etc. intersections are equally valuable to advertisers...

My videos, for example, attract women over 80 years of age, and children under 1 year. NO MONEY IN THOSE DEMOGRAPHICS.  :pcgs:

Just like with other image-based businesses, his cash cow is likely his merchandising. Although encouraging donations of all kinds has been proven to be lucrative as well.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

CGQuarterly

Well I don't want to make anyone jealous, but I just checked the Analytics page on my YouTube account, and I'm up to $0.46.  So we're living large over here at Classic Gaming Quarterly...

In all honesty, the fact that I've made 50 cents on like 11 videos in less than two months really isn't bad.  It's more money than my website has generated in its entire lifetime.  You can definitely see the potential in regularly uploading decent quality content, as the money grows nearly exponentially, since more videos -> more views -> more subs -> more views.  I haven't uploaded anything in a couple of weeks, but need to get back on the stick.  It's the voice-over stuff that's a pain in the ass.

what did game sack generate so far? :)

Hey now, that's nobody's bidness! But more than 46 cents. :)

I'm currently editing a video with this Classic Game Room guy in it. Looking at the audio waveform is humorous because of the crazy amounts of space between random words in a sentence. But rarely ever spaces between actual sentences. Many random pauses in his speech.

Nazi NecroPhile

It would be interesting to know what Game Sack is hauling in, but whatever it is you guys deserve it.  I thoroughly enjoy 'em and appreciate the effort they take to produce, and it's not like the money comes out of my pocket anyway.

Thanks! I'm always interested in what other channels make myself.  I joined the Screenwave network when it started up and maybe we'll see an increase, haven't gotten the 1st check yet (there's always at least a 1 month delay). The network has some of the bigger guys like Game Chasers, that Gamester81 guy, all of RetrowareTV, Angry Video Game Nerd and a few others I can't remember.

CONFESSION: I have enjoyed several recent episodes of CGR.

IMHO, I thought the review was rather shallow. He could have spoken more about the expansion, add-ons, variants, kinds of video outputs, etc. If he really wanted to go for the gold, he would have opened up the TG16 and PC Engine to compare the insides to see why one is bigger than the other.

But I do realize the PC engine was on loan. But that's so lame, because given his popularity there is no real excuse for not picking one up for his own review.

Bloufo

His reviews border on the nonsensical.
He mostly goes for the laughs, but they come off as corny and quite forced.

I will say he has a bunch of committed YT supporters. Anything remotely negative aimed at their beloved Mark and you can be sure they'll be up in arms.

He is definitely "parodying" reviews, whether that is intentional or not has yet to be determined (ha!)

I find him entertaining, but he is not a serious reviewer.

The comments on that video are awful. Most people are talking about the KFDMF reference or whatever instead of the game. Anyway the next episode of whatever my show is (forget the name at the moment) will also have Insanity.  :)

Arkhan Asylum

Seeing him playing Frenzy while blasting that soundtrack made my day.

That was hilarious.

Maybe this will trigger a surge of Xbox Live purchases.   I think if I sell, like 90 more, I actually get paid like 30$ from them!
