2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

TheClash603

It was released on every platform ever, but I have never played any version of New Zealand Story.

As platformers are my bread and butter, this makes little sense.

Ha! I haven't played much of this myself. I dunno, it never seemed to get much attention, just keeps staying off my radar.

We must rectify this situation. I have a heavily worn HuCARD that (hopefully) still works. Heavily worn = it spent the day on a busy road, constantly under a car or truck tire.

New Zealand Story is okay. It's by Taito so it's not a far stretch to say that it isn't anything more than Bubble Bobble with larger levels. If that idea excites you then dive in!

_Paul

I found it more fun than the PCE version. I was quite pleasantly surprised.

PunkCryborg

I have never played a new zealand story game. It looks pretty cool and a lot of fun.

Metal storm next please:D
That game is a lot of fun to watch other people play and see them try and figure out the gravity mechanics

I'm really amazed at the number of people who've not played New Zealand Story. I considered it one of those games that everyone has played, like Out Run or Golden Axe.

Oh, I have recorded Metal Storm already, you might have to wait for it though.

You might be surprised, but the NES release of Kiwi Kraze was the ONLY console version of NZS to come to North America.  Of course, there were C-64 and Amiga versions, but again consoles ruled the roost.  Typically if I see a game like NZS or Rainbow Islands on a person's "best games ever" list, I can peg them as a Brit from a mile away.

The convenience store near my Jr. High school had NZS and Rastan Saga II, which is where I first learnt about both games, and I bet most people in the US or Canada remember NZS in the arcades first, and perhaps as an import second.

It's also easy to answer why NES Kiwi Kraze is more fun than the PCE version: the PCE NZS has sub-NES music quality.

I remember watching a friend of mine beat Batman NES back in 89. Hard as balls but very cool and atmospheric (<--my favorite word it seems) game. Sunteam, with all do respect, brother, you ended Wibble too early. This game's tunes would feature nicely in an episode. :)

Arkhan Asylum

lol, when the boss shoots the blasts and you go "Oh croikey", I loled.

Batman on NES is definitely one of the best games on the system.   The wall jumping is the best hiddenish feature in the game.

I hated Nintendo when they got the Batman games and my Genesis couldn't.   ;)

Don't you need to wall jump to pass the first stage?

You need to use it everywhere. But there are some spots where it really helps, but isnt obvious.

Arjak

Ah, Batman! An excellent choice! The video was excellent as well. I remember the first time I played this game, the only games I was really familiar with were Mario and Sonic, so I kept trying to kill the enemies by jumping on their heads.

It's good to see you play a real classic. I can only assume that playing lesser games for a while could burn you out, so it's good to mix it up a bit. That Race America game and some of your other choices looked awful.

I request Xexyx. I played it a bunch last night and it's AWESOME. gotta play up till you get to a shoot em up part

Batman is probably my favourite of the bunch so far. Just goes to show even the NES can pull off some fantastic graphics when they try.

Yeah, i mentioned this earlier too. One of my fave NES games and HUDSON to boot!

rag-time4

I would love to see Ikari Warriors II: Victoly Road. I'd also like to second Gun-Nac, and offer Crystalis as a great game. Crystalis features many of the same enemies and sprites from Athena!

roflmao

Batman looks awesome.

I'm still looking forward to Guardian Legend or Gun.Smoke. :)

Quote from: Bernie on 10/13/2013, 03:34 PMWOW.  :)  Never played the NES huh?  Go for Dragon Warrior!!!
Indeed, all four are just amazing. I'll throw in a few recommendations (I own an NES with almost 200 carts myself, the console is one of my favorites)

-Dragon Warrior I-IV
-Final Fantasy
-Crystalis
-Super Mario Bros. 1-3
-The Guardian Legend
-Life Force
-Gradius
-Faxanadu
-Double Dragon II
-The Mafat Conspiracy
-The Legend of Zelda/Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
-Mega Man 1-6
-Adventures of Lolo 1-3
-Kirby's Adventure
-Castlevania 1-3 (you might find the second to be a little odd or meh, I personally enjoyed it)
-Batman & Batman: Return of the Joker
-Blaster Master
-Journey to Silius
-1943
-Bobble Bobble
-Solomon's Key & Fire N' Ice
-DuckTales
-Gargoyle's Quest II
-Goonies II
-Bionic Commando
-Metroid
-Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
-Ninja Gaiden 1-3
-Kabuki Quantum Fighter
-Power Blade 1&2
-Solstice (hard as fuck but an enjoyable experience)
-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II and III
-Willow (Zelda-like RPG based off the movie, very well done IMO)
-Tetris (Tengen Tetris is better but there's nothing more 'classic' than Nintendo's)
-The Ultima games

If you are interested in collecting repro carts, which I'm not against myself as I have a few for the SNES (Tales of Phantasia and Seiken Densetsu 3), I'll throw a few names out for you:

-Sweet Home
-Ys I, II and III
-Dragon Slayer Jr. Romancia; if you like a good challenge
-Mother/Earthbound Zero
-Parodius
-Ufouria
-Moon Crystal
-Glory of Hercales II
-Holy Diver
-Esper Dream 1 and/or 2

All that should definitely get you started, I know there's a few I left out, it's a console that's good for discovering things on your own for the most part ;) I know that there's several that others could recommend too.

I left out a lot that I wanted to recommend, counting the fact I said I have almost 200 carts, I picked out a "few" from my collection :P But yes. Xexyz is a great game and worthy of adding. I need to get around to that myself, eventually.

Not sure if you are taking requests but why not try Panic Restaurant or R.C. Pro Am

PunkCryborg

Forgot to post on the Metal Storm vid. This is probably in my top 5 favorite NES games. It's also one of my favorite NES games. I think it would have made such a nice PCE game. I hope you get some more time to play it. It gets very challenging but I never got too frustrated and played the whole game through.

Also another game recommendation: Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti
