2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

Quote from: Mathius on 06/17/2010, 01:36 PMThis is a very interesting thread! I didn't even know it existed until futurematt bumped it. As already stated earlier some of these codes are crazy long, especially considering the impact some have on gameplay. It's like the programmers didn't want people discovering them. Heh, who knows?
Crazy long is right. The Final Soldier code needs the Enigma Machine to decipher it. And that Twin Bee code is absurd with needing the TurboTap and extra controllers. The slim screen mode should be default. lol

Quote from: futurematt on 06/17/2010, 11:29 AMHi, very interested by this topic, and will try out the codes. Thanks for all the research!

I would like to actually clarify whether the various games output at a higher resolution ie a greater number of pixels in each dimension for the image in question, as opposed to simply redrawing the image in different proportions.
Yup, these codes actually change the output resolution of the system to the higher resolution used by games like R-Type, Hero Tonma, etc that you mentioned later in your message. The games (in most cases) don't redraw the image to fill the screen, however, so the end result is a "tate" arcade-style image with black bars on either side on a standard 4:3 television.

A little off topic and a NecroPhile bump, sorry..... but I was playing Travel Epule and hit something on accident and my screen collapsed. I thought my PVM was dying but it is some kind of arcade mode. Press SELECT to pause then toggle the screen mode by pressing up or down

Great thread, can't wait to get home to try this on a couple of games.

Yes, this thread deserved a bump.

CrackTiger

Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

Trying to figure this out...where exactly do you put the password in at on Cyber Core?

I either have New Game or Continue as options...no password entry screen :(

Edit: Nvm, figured it out!

Quote from: nat on 04/23/2008, 07:58 PMI don't know exactly what they did, but I can tell you they didn't "just squish the graphics" for arcade mode.
I hate to break it to ya, but... they just squished the graphics.  ;)

The reason it plays better like that is because it's closer to the original arcade aspect ratio.  Let's say, for example in the arcade, your code told the dragon to move up by 1 pixel per gametick if you held UP and left by one pixel per gametick if you held LEFT.  That's going to feel totally different on the PCE when it's stretched about +20% horizontally.  It feels like you move sideways very slowly, but up and down at normal speed.  I ran into this when tom and i hacked Super Raiden.  That's why he added the arcade aspect mode to it.

Did you use 256 instead of ____________ for Super Raiden? Tell me more. Also, I need to update the page with this "arcade mode" version of Super Raiden.  :pcgs:

Quote from: Opethian on 12/30/2013, 10:10 PMAlzadick also has "arcade mode"
Tell me more! How is it accessed? Thanks.  :pcgs:

esteban: Super Raiden is 256x224 normally.  Tom simply added a mode that changes the game to the middle resolution mode (352x224) so it basically restores the arcade aspect ratio.

From options set score to 64000 time min to 04 time sec to 13 and sound to 0E
now it will be in arcade aspect

I have tried repeatedly to get Dragon Spirit to work with the "high resolution" mode, but I can never get the trick to work.

Presumably you are resetting using the pad?  To get this to work I hold down start and then press select multiple times about 2 secs apart.
