Anyone here have a PS3?  I have one but not because I'm a Playstation fan (I'm not really) but because I'm using it to capture HD gameplay footage to sell to various sites :)  My wife wasn't too pleased about me keeping it (since there wasn't any good games out for it) but now with MotorStorm released (YES!) she is starting to warm up to it.

I don't own any game system by Sony anymore. My thoughts on the PS3 were that it will last, but not because of quality titles, only because Sony will be so stubborn they will keep it going like they did Betamax for a few years until they can try a new system release. As it is right now the hardware in the PS 3 is not mind blowing or anything compared to a gaming computer I can build for the same price.

One day I may purchase a XBox 360,but not till the problems get worked out more and more games I would actually play get released. As is I am happy with the Wii,Gamecube titles I own,and gaming on PC when I need a 3d game fix.

ParanoiaDragon

I'll get a PS3, when a heaping pile of great games are on it.  AND when it drops in price significantly!

No, but its a good HD video source.

Of course, so's the 360.

Not yet any ways hell i'm still debateing if i want one.I mean the 360 seems like a better deal to me then the PS3 at this point. It also has plenty of games right now... plus the live arcade stuff as well. Not to mention the 360 even is gonna get, VF5 later this year.Still if i did get a PS3 i'd probably wait for the price drop. The other reason 'that it is gonna get MGS4 even while fans ask... for a 360 release konami still won't give in

As for the next gen having a Wii right now is enough for me.

Beside i'm in "no rush plus i need to finsh collecting for my older systems still.

If Heavenly Sword turns out really well I'll probably want one, but realistically it'll be a long time before I can justify spending that much money on a game system.

Seldane

I really, really want a PS3 (for Motorstorm and Burnout 5!!), but I can't afford one, and I just got a new PC so my hd-gaming needs are somewhat satisfied already.

Also: Burnout Dominator just got released for PSP and PS2, so my Burnout needs are also satisfied for now.

I have a 60GB PS3, and I really like it. Online has been perfect so far in Resistance and Motorstorm. It's very easy to navigate around, and the system never freezes up (so far) like my 360 does (I'm on my 2nd 360.)

Motorstorm and VF5 are amazing. Tekken: Dark Resurrection just came out as a download for $20 and it's awesome. MKII Arcade is coming out soon as well, for supposedly $5. I've even been playing Q*Bert a lot over the last few days. I used to LOVE that game.

I honestly am playing my PS3 more than the 360 at the moment, mainly because of Motorstorm. I also really do like the backward compatibility with the PS1 and PS2. I've only had an issue with one PS2 game, where the music won't play.

Just like the 360, there are definitely some issues that need to be ironed out, like the fact that it won't scale to the resolution that you need to run. If a game is setup for 720p only, it scales to 480p instead of 1080i, which is all my TV will support. They have a hardware scaler, so now they just need to start using the damned thing.

Also, they need background downloading. Our concerns about not being able to find your friends while you're in a game is obviously being taken care of with "Home."

Not paying $60 for the privilege of using an online service is nice as well, especially since I get less lag over it when compared to Live.

He's probably talking about the Neo Geo arcade cartridges that can be played on the Neo Geo Home system with an adapter.  THose games are a lot cheaper than the original home cartridges.

this just reminds me, i was at woolworths today and they had an end of an isle dedicated to ps3 boxes with the console's release date and preorder, for some strange reason this managed to attract quite a few passers by who stood in front of the diplay, just mesmerised by the empty ps3 display boxes on the shelf.  It gives me this feeling that despite its flaws the ps3 will still win in Europe.

Dunno some gamers i talk to in chat rooms that are in europe import alot.

Not to, mention they get treated like shit there on what... games that are released in europe years ago suposely that has change though.

Stil heaven forbid they have a choice on what they can play.

Please like sony is realy hurting for money becuse of one importer  :P

I call it greed pure and simple.

I've give credit to sony for letting the PS3 be region free at least.

Maybe the PS3 will make a dent there or just collect dust.

To be frank i still see Sony being a arrogant company these days.

I hear loads of people are cancelling their orders and buying import machines now because the EU version is not as compatible with older PS2 games (they arsed around with the internals to make it cheaper probably).

torgo

Phil Harrison said that it will be initially compatible with 1200+ titles when the system launches. One of the magazines in EU got one already, and barely anything works, but they're running the 1.5 firmware. All of the new compatibility is included in the 1.6 firmware which will be out on launch day.

If the EU buys import PS3 because it plays more PS1 and 2 games that is good if they have PS1 and 2 games from that import region.  Only the PS3 games are region free.  So it won't help them in playing their PAL PS1 and 2 games.
Let the old mix with the new.

Seldane

Who buys a PS3 in order to play PS2 games? The people who own PS2 games most likely own PS2 systems already. Backwards compatibility sucks. I play all my PS1 games (like two of them) on a real PS1.

It would be cool if it made the games look better like playing PSone games on a PS2 or playing regular Xbox games on a 360, but since PS3s can't play import PS2/PS1 games I'd never use the backward compatibility anyway.

All the Xbox 1 games I've played on 360 look better overall, but games like Halo 1 & 2 were given special treatment and Halo 2 at least looks dramatically better (to those who play it a lot) and both support 720p.

2 things.

-A lot of people will, because that allows them to only use one console for games from all 3. Less space used.
-At least in the US version, BC does not suck. They actually installed the Emotion Engine chip onto the board of the PS3. It has been said that the software solution for the EU systems will do the job fine. The reports that you are seeing are based on the 1.5 firmware, but the 1.6, that will be released on launch day, is what adds support for all of the BC-enabled titles.

Also, look at the difference in sheer numbers of titles supported in BC between the PS3 and the 360. The PS3, reported to support 1200+ initially, the 360 after being out for over a year, what, 250'ish titles.

When I worked at an EB years ago, and the SNES was coming out, 9 times out of 10, the first question asked was "will it play the games for the NES?"

We, as gamers may not care much about BC, but a LOT of parents and under-informed consider it a very big deal.

For you guys with a PS3, can you actually do anything interesting with Linux or is it pretty much worthless?  Like I mean does a program that runs through linux have access to the PS3's full power or are they crippled in some way so that we'll never see any cool games, media players, or emulator ports?

Joe Redifer

So other than the size of the hard drive, what is the difference between the super-cheap $500 PS3 that everyone hates and the mega-expensive $600 PS3 that everyone says is the only one to get if you aren't a complete and useless loser who is a disgrace to humanity?  Is it the wireless network (which I do not have nor ever plan to have in my house)?  Is it the ability to accept flash cards (I do not see how this could be useful unless someone could explain a way that it could enhance my entire life)?  Does it lack HDMI (that would be a big reason not to get it).  I don't mind being a disgrace to humanity by getting the $500 version if it does have HDMI.  I imagine I'd probably own less than 15 games over the entire life of the console (same goes for my Wii and Xbox360... both are fucking boring so far with only a few good games).

torgo

The differences between the 2 models are:

On the 60GB model, you get:

*Bigger Hard Drive
*Internal Wireless
*Multi-Card reader (which has been more useful than I expected)
*Chrome Trim

Both models have HDMI

Also, it's incredibly easy to replace the hard drive with a larger capacity drive, and it doesn't void the warranty.

Linux works quite well, but they haven't gotten good video drivers yet. All of the Linux-based emulators that I have tried have worked very well so far.
PS Nation

Seldane

The $500 model is in no way useless. Sure, most people use wireless Internet nowadays, but other than that - it can do anything the other model can. You can put in any SATA 2,5" HDD in the PS3, so you can put a 300 GB drive in there or whatever. The thing has USB ports, so you can insert any $5 card reader in there, no need for integrated ones. Oh yeah, you can use wifi USB dongles as well.

At this point, I think there are three different Linux distributions for the PS3. Of course, there are plenty of media players and stuff that works just fine on it.

Damn I really want a $500 one now, I didn't know you could upgrade the hard drive like that, plus I HATE chrome.  I've been hoping I could find someone on craig's list who needed to seel theirs for meth money, but no luck so far, everybody on there still seems to think they're worth more than retail.  Heavenly Sword and Lair keep looking cooler and cooler everytime I see a new preview, plus I know a couple years down the line the system will probably have quite a few kickass action games like the PS2 did.

Seldane

Did you see the Heavenly Sword clip on Heroes? It looked really nice.

Wow, this thread went on without me :P

I'm playing through MotorStorm right now as well - I love the game, mostly because the 360 has nothing even close to off-road racing (the Xbox 1 Rallysport 2 was awesome but does not run on the 360.)  Sega is bringing the new Sega Rally to the PS3, so I'm really looking forward to that one.

I'm also looking forward to running Folding@Home on the PS3 as well.  The PS3 client is very well done and reports say that it can crunch 10x+ more than any new PC right now.  The client shows you in real-time who is running the PS3 client on the 3D map in the background.
