2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

Great on sega CD too.

I have Super Hydlide complete in the box. I haven't played much of it, but from what I've seen, it definitely is a far better game than the original. I've heard some really good things about it, so I definitely need to play it at some point.

Quote from: Mzo on 02/14/2014, 09:49 PMChibi-Robo on the GC is underrated.

It's really charming and nobody played it...
My little sister has this game, and I must agree. It looks really cool and unique.

As far as my picks, I am a big fan of a couple Sega Genesis games that don't get enough love.

Beyond Oasis (Genesis) - An excellent Zelda style adventure. Lots of secrets, a unique fighting system that has beat-em-up elements, a unique magic system, and created by Yuzo Koshiro's company, Ancient. I love this game, but I don't hear it discussed much, which is truly a crime. I remember going to a Blockbuster in the mid 1990s and renting this game. My dad saw it and recommended it, saying it looked good, and I remember being very skeptical. I rented it anyway, and even though I had no idea what to do, I fell in love. I must've spent hours running around the first area of the game, killing monsters aimlessly. Finally, not long before I had to take the game back, I figured out what I was supposed to do. I hadn't talked to the King! I went into the throne room, but didn't see any way to get over to the king, and it wasn't until later that I realized there were stairs leading up to him. I was playing on a really crummy old TV, and couldn't tell they were there. I had just assumed they were a wall. I quickly bought the game, and I've loved action-adventures ever since.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (Genesis) - Even though the movie sucked and was a huge disappointment even when I was a kid (I couldn't put it in those words at the time, of course, but even then, I liked the first one better.), the completely forgotten Genesis game based on it is still one of my personal favorites. I believe it was one of the last Genesis games officially released, and it does feel quite advanced for the system. It wasn't just a straight up side-scrolling action game like Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition. While it did have a few similarities to those games, like the way weapons were found around the levels and added to your inventory, the gameplay was substantially different. Instead of just making your way to the end of the level, you were usually tasked with some sort of objective to accomplish, whether it be destroying dinosaur nests, or capturing several Stegosauruses by luring them into a cage, or many others. After you complete the first level, where you basically just have to make your way to the end (one of the few of this type), you are thrown into a hub level from which you can access several other levels. Once you complete all the levels in the hub, you unlock a huge setpiece boss level which functions very differently from the normal levels. The graphics on these are quite impressive for the system. When you complete the boss level, you move on to the next hub. There are tons of unique features, like vehicles you can ride, lots of enemy types, a few strategy elements (You can earn tokens by finding them in the wild or by capturing dinos, which you can redeem for items.), and fairly nice graphics. It really feels like a game for a more advanced system, while still maintaining a special old-school charm. Definitely one to try.

I'll mention Taekwondo on SFC, a very fun and unique 1-on-1 fighter. No ridiculous specials, and wins based on points (or by knockout). I don't know of any other games quite like it, and a lot of people who play it really seem to enjoy it--I know I do!

IrishNinja

i really should get back to Chibi robo one day, that game is indeed a gem...and i totally slept on Lost World (despite owning it) because as was said, the property was terrible - gonna try that one soon!

Quote from: guest on 02/14/2014, 09:50 AMYeah it's definitely a easy going game, to me.

Arkhan Asylum

I've beaten Super Hydlide a few times on both MSX and Sega Genesis.

It's one of the best games on Sega Genesis, to me.
This "max-level forum psycho" () destroyed TWO PC Engine groups in rage: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook "Because Chris 'Shadowland' Runyon!," then the other by Aaron Nanto "Because Le NightWolve!" Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together... Both times he blamed the Aarons in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged, destructive, toxic turbo troll gang!

^damn, dude! props.  you know about that nihilistic ending then, heh.

recently had a chance to play Gunner's Heaven on PSX, a really fun little/shameless Gunstar Heroes clone.

recently, i got into Internal Section on PS1, and Die Hard on PCE...so crazy the latter never came here, was thinking the next copy i see, I'll donate to Classic Game Room - pretty sure Mark would love it.
Seeing footage of PCE's Die Hard is what got me to buy one finally... why have I still not bought that game?

Alleyway for the Game Boy is another I think is underrated.  It's too bad teh obey never got a decent Arkanoid/Breakout style game.  I love playing Alleyway, though!

I'll say it again Alisia Dragoon for the genesis. The game didn't get much attention, after it's release.Unique way for attacking a decent story and a really good sound track.

Great pick! not many people talked about this one back then and not many people talk about it now. It was (censored) awesome back then and still kicks butt. It messes with your brain big time, but totally worth it to see the ending.

Alisia Dragoon is awesome.  GAINAX + Game Arts?  Hell yeah.  Fuck you, Super Nintendo!

That game is all about the lightning upgrades.  Finding them all as quickly as possible makes a HUGE difference.  Fuck those platforms in the second to last level.

The squeaky noise she makes when she gets hit is really weird, haha.

I gave this away for one of the caption contests.  As much as I wanted to like it, something just fell short for me.

Everybody rags on Addams Family for TCD, but I love it.
I enjoy it on the NES too.
I'm a big fan of Dick Tracy on Genny, nobody talks about that one.

Another underrated game, that i happened to play today is Astal for the Saturn. The game is beautiful, and the platforming is solid. Also love when Astal screams "Yaaaataaaa"

Overall, I think racing games on the older systems are not given much attention. This one is pretty neat, and it has some replay value. It controls pretty well, the graphics are good, it has good sound effects, I love the music (only four melodies but they are fantastic). It is more challenging when you create a driver.

This game uses a battery to save your progress, and while you could finish it in one sit, I think it is more enjoyable if you make your own driver and make your car more powerful race after race.

Data East games on the NES are hit or miss (Karate Champ, Robocop 2) and that maybe another reason why this one was overlooked.

Regulars won't be surprised when I say...

MESOPOTAMIA/SOMER ASSAULT is an underrated game.

I should just link to a post from a decade ago where I explain how this game succeeds because it is a hybrid that adequately balances the different genres at its core: the ratio between Action vs. Puzzle vs. Shooting vs. Wacky physics vs. Odd mechanics of Slinky. For me, the balance is just right. A lot of experiments in hybrid-blending can rub folks a bad way because all genres are not equally loved by all people. So...I hope you try the game with an open mind.

DISCLAIMER: If you don't like quirky, then Somer Assault may not be your cup of tea.  :pcgs:

I love Somer Assault!  It took a little bit for me to get used to it when I bought it back in the day, but it's a very original game.

I think I am going to add El Viento.

I absolutely adore Shinobi Legions on the Sega Saturn.

The digitized graphics are definitely a bit cheesy (and the live action cut-scenes are absolutely ridiculous), but it all adds to the early/mid-90s nostalgia fun. The gameplay is fun, the controls are responsive, and the boss battles offer some really fun challenges.

I would definitely recommend this gem to anyone who enjoyed the barrage of ninja platformers in the late 80s/early 90s

I agree!  I'd also like to add that while the US version of this game can be a little pricey, the Japanese version (Shin Shinobi Den) can be had much, much more affordably.

I live old racing games. It's just fun to start from crappy car and slowly upgrade it into awesome car. Though sometimes, that first race or Grand Prix is just too hard for crappy car, and then the game's not very fun. I saw Al Unser a few times at a local store here. I might have to pick it up should I happen across it again.

Absolutely! The US version just seems to keep climbing and climbing in price over the past couple of years. :/ And from what I understand the Japanese version is nearly identical to the US release.
