12/23/2024: Localization News - Team Innocent

PC-FX Localization for Team Innocent is released, a pre-Christmas gift!! In a twist, it feels like the NEC PC-FX got more attention in 2024 than any other time I can remember! Caveat: The localizers consider the "v0.9" patch a BETA as it still faces technical hurdles to eventually subtitle the FMV scenes, but they consider it very much playable.

Quote from: https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2014/04/25/unearthing-atari-games/8170899/Hidden for three decades in a landfill deep in the New Mexico desert lie thousands of Atari cartridges from what is widely believed to be worst video game ever made — or so the urban legend goes.

A group of filmmakers hopes to get to the bottom of the mystery Saturday by digging up the concrete-covered landfill in search of up to a million discarded copies of "E.T. The Extraterrestrial" that the game's maker wanted to hide forever. The game and its contribution to the demise of Atari have been the source of fascination for video game enthusiasts for 30 years, and the search for the cartridges will be featured in an upcoming documentary about the biggest video game company of the early '80s.

"Bottom line, this is just trash. But there is a legend in it, we want to unlock that legend, that mystery," a spokeswoman for the public relations firm working on behalf of Xbox Entertainment Studios, one of the companies developing the film. The documentary is expected to be released later this year on Microsoft's Xbox game consoles.

QuoteALAMOGORDO, N.M. -- A construction crew is digging through several feet of dirt and trash in a New Mexico landfill to reach what they believe is a giant cache of cartridges from what some call the worst video game ever made.

A New York Times article from 1983 reported that Atari cartridges of "E.T. The Extraterrestrial" were dumped in the landfill in Alamogordo.

Fuel Entertainment is producing a documentary about the search.

The videogame's commercial failure was partially responsible for the demise of Atari in the early 1980's.

The contents of the "Atari Grave" have become urban legend, with blog posts speculating about millions of cartridges and other Atari projects buried there. A spokeswoman for Atari says the company changed hands many times since 1983 and does not know what is buried there.

So...will this urban legend of an alleged "Atari Grave" finally be uncovered ?? ;) Somebody thought about it enough to actually take it this far... Heh-heh.

InfraMan

Oh cool, this is starting today! Last I heard, the dig had been delayed pending government approval... glad to hear things are going forward finally!

synbiosfan

Now go dig out those Atari games that have been stored in your attic/basement/garage and you can list them on eBay claiming to be from the dig site! :P

Centipede is awesome, how did that get in there?

If this rumor is true, shouldn't there be about 100,000 of them over there?  Just finding a few is kinda fishy.

According to the article:

QuoteThe AP reports they've found "hundreds" so far, and we'll keep you updated as they keep digging.

Sadler

I'm curious how many different titles they'll find.

Tatsujin

yeah I find that kinda strange too, why they have to dig them out like separated gold nuggets all over the place, rather than all stacked together in one place.

I mean did atari burried them back in 1983 like single seeds on a field?

well they have big holes in the ground and they stack all the trash into a pile and push it in the hole with a bulldozer so im sure it's all mixed in with lots of other trash.

HailingTheThings

This is super cool. I hope they have plans to recycle any and all carts found to make new repro carts or something along those lines. Yeah!

So has anyone thought to try out any of these carts to see if they still work?

I'm just curious as to how they're going to make an entire documentary out of this.

It'll probably be mostly about how "Atari ruined the video game industry" and how "ET directly led to a crash" sort of thing that's usually bandied about, culminating in the final big dig to see if what we've known for a while now is true.

plus the whole planning of this operation until accomplished etc. which can be, if made well, quite exiting stuff. sure must be mixed together with some (made up-)drama etc.

I was thinking the same thing.  The movie is almost finished, and AVGN fans will buy it or go see it no matter what.  If anything it will probably promote the movie and help sales.  Google is smart, but not that smart so it'll pull up ET landfill and the AVGN movie tie in.

That makes sense. I guess if they can make a riveting documentary about two guys competing for a high score on Donkey Kong, the scapegoating of E.T. could be stretched into a good 90 minutes of entertainment.

Just do a documentary about the rise and fall of the early video game market, then fill up time hyping the crap out of the urban legend, then drag out the detective work leading to the spot and excavation.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

Psycho Punch

I'm not sure why this is a "legend". They had to destroy their huge overstock, and they can't magically make them disappear.

Ah, interesting, he even worked-in the actual E.T. programmer into the movie.  I wonder though if he'll try to update his plot now that some games have been unearthed... Looks like he's in post-production with it, could be too late and it seems like he might've went with the notion that the big grave was all bullshit (well, I assume that from listening to the programmer)...

I heard he was making a movie a few years ago and I figured it was just talk.  Now I watched that video and I will say at the very least, the guy is ambitious.  I might give it a watch and hope it is "Troma good," just to support a fan of video games and independent movies.

Hey, didn't you win the Super Star Soldier raffle? Congrats, man! uhhhhh..... That's how water and gravity work. Water sinks from the surface through the soil until ends up in some water table or aquifer. Not trying to be a smart ass, seriously. Where these buried in a desert or something?

Also i heard there are tons of these that the city has yet to put up yet. So those people who spent over $1k to get one are going to see that later on more copies are going to go up for less money.
