Hey Gang,

Simple question: Do any codes exist for the game Altered Beast CD/HuCard?

blueraven

If you have a DUO you will need a syscard 1.0 to play the CD version of Altered Beast. Otherwise it will freeze up after the first level as a human.

Not exactly a code, (more of a bug that nobody ever worked out) but definitely worth noting so that you don't pull your hair out trying to get to level 2.

Bonknuts made a version which has a jump button.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

I'm pretty sure that's what it was. People were complaining about using Up for jump, even after fifteen years of becoming used to it in fighting games, and I suggested that a simple hack would make everyone happy. He just up and whipped it off in no time. :P

Ave Pad 3's are still for overly sensitive people and don't make much of a difference. So those who feel that they much have a dedicated button for jumping can still do it with a regular "2" button pad.

Ha! I never knew about that modified version with the jump button.

ALSO: I am fine using SELECT and START in games, but it really is nice to use BUTTON III. I know you don't think it is a big deal, but I feel like it is a more "dignified" way to play the game.

I don't think anybody is arguing that RUN/SELECT is a problem, rather, BUTTON III feels more polished (and less of a hack), like...the developers themselves would have opted for it if a three-button controller had been standard.

It's just extremely lame when self-proclaimed "hardcore" gamers complain that Forgotten Worlds on PCE is unplayable because of broken controls, while the Genesis version's controls are "arcade perfect". Similar complaints have come up here in the recent past ("don't even try it without the Ave 3 Pad!"), making Run button use out to be a big deal. It's neat having a third round button instead of using Run for something, but it's only a convenience and not a revolution.

^^^ hahjajahahaabaan. Well, of course I agree with you on this point.

For example, special weapons in Bloody Wolf are fun, especially the flame thrower, and, I must admit, the  feel of the rubber RUN/SELECT buttons and their firm "squish" is so goddamn perfect (especially for the flamethrower, did I mention that?)

I feel like shifting speeds in various shoot-em-ups  can go either way—I am not sure if I have a preference.  :pcgs:

Pressing up to jump in a fighting game is fine. In a side-scrolling game, not really. Plus the controls in PCE Altered Beast (either version) are pretty crappy. I'd also rather press an actual button instead of an oddly-shaped RUN button for an in-game action other than a menu or pause. Tactile feel is everything. That's why people don't like controllers that feel like crap. People who don't mind probably enjoy virtual buttons on mobile devices.

Also, as long as you remain in human form you can get past level 1 in PCE CD Altered Beast.

Ok, so no real cheats then? Like add 3 more lives or more continues? Lol

Yes. And thank you for the clarification. I agree that the discrepancy is bullshit.

No cheats I know of, unless you play it in Magic Engine and use a cheat there.

To be fair the controls/gameplay in Altered Beast are crappy. It really depends on the game when it comes to pressing Up to jump, but it used to not be uncommon. Maybe it's just too unusual for people who started playing games no earlier than the 16-bit generation. It works fine in Altered Beast because it's not really an action game and the slow pace and floaty jumps suit it. I don't think that Altered Beast is worth going out to buy an Ave 3 pad (or an Everdrive) for. But I don't find old games as difficult as many people seem to nowadays, so maybe I'm just weird (Pac Land plays great with no d-pad/joystick).

The Run button being used in Forgotten Worlds isn't an issue in the way it's usually made out to be, since you don't play the console ports of that game like typical thumb floppers do. You have one finger tip on it and another on the other rotating button at all times. No matter what, it isn't a traditional way to play a game and neither was the arcade's control scheme.

I agree that tactile feel is important and that's why PCE pads remain my favorite controller. But there are more people out there who think things like SFII is better played with SNES shoulder buttons than those who don't.
