of which game/port you think the PC Engine port is the best of all?

for me, i feel raiden and kyûkyoku tiger are best on the pce, due to its better gameplay/control than other versions e.g arcade, psx..although the grafics can't reach the level of the arcade pendants.

gradius also is a candidate. i think it looks and sounds better that the arcade original or other ports.

wonderboy III - monster lair is better as well due to its incredible and unique BGM, altough its missing parallax scrolling.

last but not least, winds of thunder is better without any doubts.

what games do you think are the best on the PCE?

PCE Games countdown: 690/737 (47 to go or 93.6% clear)

Sega does what Nintendon't, but only NEC does better than both together!^^

Gate of Thunder is certainly up there as I think it sums up the system pretty well.

EDIT: Since GoT count, how about Devil's Crush :P ?
Quote from: TurboXray on 01/02/2014, 09:21 PMAdding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

sorry keranu, but this thread is supposed for games which where released on multiple platforms only (at least two different)

sorry for confusing with my inexact description :(

OldRover

Cadash. It doesn't look the same on the PCE/TG16 but the port in and of itself turned out far better than the arcade. The Genesis port tries to be like the arcade but fails miserably and ends up looking like a half-assed attempt (especially since they cut two chars from the roster!).

Conquered so far: Sinistron, Violent Soldier, Tatsujin, Super Raiden, Shape Shifter, Rayxanber II

Obviously John Madden DUO Football has stood the test of time.

I'm not as familiar with all the PCE titles (I'm learning), but Ys on the PCE/Turbo is the best...

Joe Redifer

Devil's Crush is slightly better all-around on the Turbo.

Dragon's Curse is slightly better than Wonder Boy 3 on the SMS (especially at the smoothness of the scrolling).  But the music is almost a toss-up.

Monster Lair is definitely better on the Turbo.

Lords of Thunder is indeed better on the Turbo, but it's not infinitely better as some would have you believe.

Forgotten Worlds is better on the Turbo, but it lacks parallax scrolling!

R-Type is almost better on the Turbo... I say "almost" since it is lacking the bonus stage of the SMS version.

I feel Aero Blasters is better on the Turbo.

Ys 1 and 2 is best on the Turbo

Ys 4 is best on the Turbo

Fatal Fury 2 is best on the Turbo ACD (better than the Neo Geo version even).

termis

- SF2:CE for "16 bit" incarnations.  Though this is definitely debatable.

It's kinda unfair for these below (CD vs. carts)
- All Ys I-IV (I haven't played PC remakes).
- Exile
- Valis series

Joe Redifer

CD vs Cart isn't unfair at all.  Look at how much better the Genesis Valis 3 is over the Turbo CD version!

termis

It is?  They seemed pretty identical to me, but with the pce/tg16 you get speech, red book audio and all that jazz.  (same with Ys, Exile, etc.)

ParanoiaDragon

Forgotten Worlds for Turbo is, well, worlds better then the Genny version, it looks damn good in comparison!

Keranu

Crap, how could I forget Ys?

Quote from: JoeFatal Fury 2 is best on the Turbo ACD (better than the Neo Geo version even).
Because of the loading times and worse graphics, I'd say the Neo Geo version is better. Though I think FF Special for PCE has faster loading times and in that case, I'll take the PCE version because of the superior soundtrack.

I don't think its fair to compare games that aren't ports from something else (games that originated on PC Engine). Like Lords of Thunder. So Magical Chase and Bonk's Adventure and Military Madness are out.

Of course, by that logic it isn't fair to compare a Turbo port of a game that originated on another console, like Dynastic Hero/MWIII. But I think it's fine since this topic is 'best on PCE' and not a general port discussion.

The first game that I thought of is Forgotten Worlds, even without the 2 player co-op. The gameplay is still more faithful since you're interacting with graphics that look like the arcade and the MD/SMS ports are more original. And aside from faithful portness, I believe its just a better game.

Although I feel that Aeroblasters is a better game on PC Engine, the Megadrive version is a way better port and is almost identical to the arcade. But the PCE version is better than the arcade overall.

Ninja Spirit is not surprisingly, better on PCE than Gameboy.

If we're listing all ports that are best on Turbo, I'd be here all day, even if only choosing ones that are clearly better and not a toss up(like Street Fighter II). And I;m already late for work.  :P

Should we each pick one best of the 'best on PCE' game as we list general 'best on PCE's?
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

cho_aniki

I definitely think Dynastic Hero is the best version of Wonder Boy in Monster World, I like the character design and the music is fantastic.

I also agree as far as Forgotten Worlds is concerned.

R-Type is also best on Turbo, the SMS version is good however.

Another game that comes to mind is Shinobi, although the Arcade is much better, I think the Pc engine got the better port.

SuperDeadite

Gradius and Gradius II on PCE each have an extra bonus level that is unique to these versions (at least that I know of anyway).

The best arcade port of R-Type was on "R-Types" for the Playstation.  Personally though, I like the PCE-SCD "R-Type Complete CD" the best.  The cut-scenes were a nice addition, and I LOVE that crazy remixed soundtrack.

I don't necessarily think that Dynastic Hero is better than MWIII, but I do think its fair to compare them in this thread, unlike Lords of Thunder.

I haven't played through DH & MWIII one after the other, but from memory and some brief comparisons, I'd say they're more or less equal.

The Turbo version of Ninja Spirit also blows away the Amiga version!  I didn't know there was a GB version though.

I don't normally count computer games against console ports. And I don't count super advanced consoles from the future that simply emulate classics either.

So I wouldn't compare R-Type TG-16 to the PSX port or other Turbo/PCE ports against stuff like the Amiga, Spectrum, Amstrad, X68000, Marty, etc.

Bloody Wolf is way better on PCE than the arcade version. The framerate is smooth and the soundtrack is one of the best around(the arcade's music is boring). Should we include ports of arcades that only made it to Turbo/PCE?

Aren't the Puyo Puyo games best overall on PCE CD?

I first played Loom on the Turbo, so when I finally played it on PC I was amazed with how beautiful it looked!  It was like playing a special edition version or something, lol...  I still enjoy the Turbo version though. I'm glad I played that one first, if I had played the PC version first, I would have probably thought that the Turbo SCD version was a crappy port...lol...

Also I've been playing lots of Prince of Persia, and I definitely prefer the Turbo version over the NES and SNES versions!  Great music, and better grafx!!!  Excellent!  Anyone know if this came out for the Genny?

Thanks for the Game Boy Ninja Spirit footage.  It looks pretty damn good, for a Game Boy game, but I hope that the shadow ninjas (or whatever they're called) don't disappear so much when playing on real hardware.  It looks almost unplayable with all that f'n flicker.

Neversaw the gameboy Ninja Spirit myself.  Looks pretty good for Gameboy, but I just shudder at the thought of that game on the real hardware.  It's gotta look terrible in motion.

I finished it in one sitting the first time I played it. Flicker was never an issue, but I was playing it through a Super Gameboy.

ANY Gameboy game can look and sound great on the Super Gameboy.

Even better is the Super Gameboy for the GameCube. Don't know the technical name for it, although I should since I own one...

Darius Plus is pretty accurate on the PC Engine, though not as good as the arcade original, I doubt whether there are any ports that beat the PCE one. The Gameboy revamp of Darius is also good fun and worth checking out.
