Have anyone watched this when it was on VH1?

I want the DVD -- Love the Decade for Music, TV Shows

OldMan

Lived it. Watched it. Don't need to do it again.

TR0N

I watched enough times when vh1 air it. It's also the last time id watch the channel. Since it became reality TV show crap. I grew up in that era but my fondness for it was the entertainment only.

I love 80's pop culture. My fave. Punk, hardcore, synth pop, electro, thrash, etc. really blossomed. Fluorescent. Pastel. Geometric.

The 90's and 2000's were totally lame in terms of pop culture.

I am biased because I lived the 80's. But the 90's and 2000's just can't compare.

---------- ABOUT THE TV SHOW
Back on topic: I saw a few episodes when it originally aired. It was fun. As with all of these shows, the folks making commentary did not necessarily have anything insightful/authentic to say...but rather make jokes. Which is fine, but it would have been nice if the show's producers found some folks who could actually talk about their genuine experiences, too.

I remember that the best part of the show were the conversations it started with family and friends. :)

It was fun to watch when it first aired, but also kinda annoying due to how fake it is. You listen to some comedian make some jokes about how he reacted to something Michael Jackson did or some toy or sitcom, and they are sometimes funny jokes, but then you do the math and realize this comedian was two years old when the incident happened.

Now it's 2015, I can watch compilations of 80s commercials on YouTube and make my own jokes.

Danger Mouse was massive here in the UK in the 80s. Count Duckula from the same animators was also popular.
They're relaunching a brand new Danger Mouse cartoon, I saw my kids watching the trailer for it the other day.

I used to watch Dangermouse on Nickelodeon, back when it was a cool network.

I feel like the 80's were an AWESOME time to be a kid (I wouldn't trade my childhood for anything), but not so much if you were an adult (because of the shit economy).

MrMaffew

80's music gives me life. I love all the synths used in so many of the songs. Also, just go watch any of the music videos, they're great.

Looking at some peoples' ages and whatnot, it appears you are right. I must be confusing this show with I Love the 70s, which had many of the same people on it pretending they were actualized human beings when bell bottoms and hula hoops were a thing, when in fact they hadn't made it though kindergarten yet.

If you were born in 1971 your opinion of E.T. or Rainbow Bright may be valid, your opinion of Jimmy Carter's presidency however...not as much. Watching people make fun of the Ford Pinto when they'd never driven one, the 8 track cassette when they've never listened to one, political candidates they were young to vote for/against, etc. There was very little white hair on these shows, just like the rest of T.V. Not everyone in 1984 spent their days playing with GI Joes. I did, sure, but there was also Apartheid, the explosion of pornography on VHS, and Reaganimics. I didn't know anything about that shit.

I was born in 1973 and I remember all sorts of cool things from my childhood, but that's just it: child-hood. My opinions of politics, music, war, economics, sex scandles, Bloom County, AIDS, televangelists, etc weren't really worth a shit until at least 1990.

I watched I Love the 80s when it came out on VH1 years ago and enjoyed it. I grew up during the 80s so that period of time has a very special place in my heart. The music, movies, TV shows, toys, and everything were great. 80s music is the soundtrack to my life. Although there are always terrible things going on in the world, it seems like the 80s had a more positive vibe, like anything was possible. Not so much anymore.

johnnykonami

I remember being obsessed with Dangermouse when I was a kid.  I haven't checked it out since it popped up on Netflix though.  Saw a little bit of Count Duckula, too, but I don't think I liked it as much.  My other 80's cartoon obessions were Adventures of the Little Koala, Gobots, Bionic Six, Mighty Orbots, Galaxy High School, Silverhawks... I probably watched a ton of other stuff that's not ringing any bells right now and I also watched and liked the obvious hits like He-Man, Thundercats, and GI Joe.  Had a sister so She-ra wasn't left out, either.

Yup, me too.  Those shows were 2 of my fav's growing up.  I got entire series of Danger Mouse on DVD, & Season 1 of Duckula.  They never did more Duckula DVD's(in the US at least) so I assume they sold poorly.

They played Karate Champ by Data East. Strangely enough, Karate Champ came out in 1984 while the Kumite portrayed in the movie supposedly took place in 1975. The whole Frank Dux story about the Kumite is said to be complete bullshit but it's still a great movie. Very good, but brick not hit back!!

80s music rocks. Even when it's bad, and it often is, it's still good. There's an unseriousness about it that makes it better than bad music of the 90s or 00s (or today). Listening to Def Leppard's Pyromania now. Such a good, good album.

You need to get out more. Most of my favorite records are from the 80s too, but great stuff is being released every single week. And Def fucking Leppard? That shit is the opposite of timeless. The production is dated, the lyrics completely vapid and corny, and the musicianship is about 8th grade level most of the time.

Should have said Number of the Beast, Disintegration, Power Corruption and Lies, Thriller, Keeper of the Seven Keys, Actually, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, 1987 - What the Fuck Is Going On?, In 3D, Violator,  Mummer, Purple Rain, Back to Basics, The Queen is Dead, Closer, Licensed to Ill, ...and Justice for All, Operation Mindcrime, etc etc etc. Def Leppard was easily one of the worst bands of the 80s, better only than the ten thousand clone bands that came after them.

<Waiting for him to tell me why "pwokopwok" is offensive, too...>

NightWolve

Ha, esteban FTW!

I will second the appreciation for Def Leppard personally. Photograph and Rock of Ages from Pyromania are some of my favorites. The follow up album Hysteria was a rare one for me cause it was a fully packed CD with many great songs instead of filler stuff where you bought a CD with one good hit and the rest was garbage. It's too bad they could never repeat the success of that album.

I also did pick up a taste for Depeche Mode in that era, so I like a bit of Violator and some before and after stuff as well.

CGQuarterly

Violator is one of the best albums ever made.

Which Def Leopard album has Pour Some Sugar On Me?  Which ever one that is, I bought it off of a classmate for 25 cents when we were in the 6th grade (1988).  The cassette version, of course.

NightWolve

Yeah, Hysteria, their greatest one.

CGQuarterly

Violator.

I don't care. I love that album.

Plus, it's imperfections are part of its charm.

Don't hate the Human League because you heard one song played too often on the radio.

Great band. Great albums. Many flaws. Charming flaws.

Except for that one shite album that even I can't stomach—Crash.

God awful shite. I loathe Crash.

Photography and Rock of Ages alone I think put Pyromania above Hysteria, and then the rest just puts it into a new league.

Violator is actually 1990, though I guess from a pedant's point of view, the "1980s" technically is from 1981-1990.

CGQuarterly

There's a YouTube channel called "Generic Male DJs" that has a shitload of 80's new wave mix tapes.  Pretty good shit, IMO.

technozombie

I was born in 81 so I wasn't exactly a musical connoisseur during the decade but there was a lot of great music. I love the Cure, The Church, Echo and the Bunnymen, Cocteau Twins, and others I can't think of because I'm posting at 2:30 a.m.

Mathius

I miss the 80s so bad. I lived in the country so it was all riding my bike for miles, 4-wheelin', playing hide and seek with my 3 dogs, staying inside on a hot day during the drought of '88 to play Metroid, and of course the music. That music! Every time I turn on VH1 Classic (which is everyday) my main program is the one that shows nothing but 80s music vids. I nearly tear up during every video for the reasons stated above.

For me heaven will be the 80s and 90s running continuously in a loop. ....with quick jumps to the late 60s to hit some concerts.
