12/23/2024: Localization News - Team Innocent

PC-FX Localization for Team Innocent is released, a pre-Christmas gift!! In a twist, it feels like the NEC PC-FX got more attention in 2024 than any other time I can remember! Caveat: The localizers consider the "v0.9" patch a BETA as it still faces technical hurdles to eventually subtitle the FMV scenes, but they consider it very much playable.

I've been curious to know how all of you go about considering games you've beaten officially cleared/finished/beaten/etc.

-Do you use continues or only go for a 1cc for an actual clear?

-Do you only use the number of continues that the game allots you?

-Shooters must be 1cc'ed but platformers can use continues? Vise versa?

-Certain shooters/platformers get exceptions and can use continues? (e.g. Tatsujin, Rayxanber, Browning)

-Play default difficult then ramp it up later? Start at highest difficulty?

-Only play the first level for your "review" of the game?

-Stare at your shelf-candy and don't play them in fear of ruining their value?

For some reason, shooters I don't consider it a cleared unless I 1cc it. Null always said he uses continues as practice for later stages and for practicing a real run. I've stuck to that. Yet platformers I use continues, especially Browning because it's so goddamn hard and cheap sometimes.

I'm not trying to say so-and-so didn't clear the game because they used continues; I'm just genuinely curious to see if you push yourself purposefully or just want to see those credits roll no matter what.

I'm okay at games, so I'm a "within the continue limit" kinda guy. Everyone has vastly different skill levels in games.

I also beat a game in normal difficulty, though there are some where Normal is the lowest difficulty.

I haven't 1CCed many shooters on the system, here's my list

Coryoon
Blazing Lazers
Gate of Thunder
Gradius
Override
1943 Kai

The Bonk games I 1CC, because you get so many extra lives and health from the bonus stages.

I'm not very good at games so if the credits roll, I consider it beaten regardless of lives/difficulty/continues. If I really enjoy a game and want to keep playing it, then I will ramp up the difficulty, but this is rare. There are so many good games out there that I would typically prefer to just try something new over mastering an old game.

Use continues within what the game provides stock. If I have to use a code of some type I don't consider it a real "clear".

Yep.

The same rules apply regardless of genre.

Usually I start at default. I may go higher or lower depending on the game.

Quote-Only play the first level for your "review" of the game?
That's ridiculous. You don't see much of the game that way.

Quote-Stare at your shelf-candy and don't play them in fear of ruining their value?
I play my games. Though obviously some get played a heck of a lot more than others.

I think continues are fine if the game allows it. If I like a game enough to want to work through the game at a higher difficulty level or whatever else to add challenge I might try to 1CC it, play without continues, etc. Otherwise I play with the default options set.

For the most part, I only consider a game beat if it's 1CC and at 'normal' difficulty or higher; the exceptions are games like Bazaru, where you're supposed to advance through trial and error.  Otherwise, I use continues to practice later levels or to see more of games I'd otherwise never get to with my meager skills.

Skilled completion - 1CC all the way.
Just want to see the ending - continues allowed.

Think it comes from playing games in the arcades many years ago, continuing was a waste of money as starting from the beginning would always make your money last longer. :)

Gentlegamer

I sometimes stop playing when I reach Game Over, sometimes spam continues to make progress for practice sake.

I do think the 1cc standard is best for evaluating the difficulty of arcade-style games, like most shooters.

VenomMacbeth

I typically start with lowest difficulty & go for a 1cc.  I'll ramp it up if I master playing it on easy.

I was just playing Ranger-X, and although I've beaten it without dying before, the game does oddly use "continues" in place of lives...at least, I assume this is the case, as I'll get a jingle when my score reaches a certain point, but there's nothing that displays how many continues you have left (thank god...the HUD is crowded enough as it is).

Buh buh buh, I have almost all teh games evar.  I R TEH BESTEST COLLECTR!!

Psycho Punch

1st playthrough: "free play" (use all continues until game end)
2nd and later playthroughs: reset at 1st "Game Over"

That's how I do it, when you play a game for the first time it's usually challenging enough on it's own, but in later playthroughs I always try to 1cc it to keep the game challenging enough to be interesting.

I pretty much agree with DragonmasterDan.  I don't believe that I have ever yet been able to 1 CC a shoot-'em-up yet.  While I think that it's awesome that some gamers have to skills to do so, and I respect them for those skills, I don't believe that I can do that for most shoot-'em-ups without spending way too much time.

Beating a game legitimately requires "no continues"...but some games are so challenging I am simply happy simply to beat the damn thing within the allotted number of continues. I don't care if it is "legit" or not, I am just happy to succeed.

For example, I don't think I have ever beaten Sinistron without using a bunch of continues.  I just can't play the game without choking and dying (I suck at the asteroid level..sometimes I get lucky, but usually I use continues). Sinistron is supposed to be easier than Violent Soldier, so that makes me feel like a CHUMP.

Sinistron also has (I think) unlimited continues...so once I pass the stupid asteroid level, I can beat the game without continues.

I suck at the asteroids.

If there is a save system in place than no 1cc needed. Shooters and arcade ports should be 1cc. There are definitely exceptions though. Rayxanber II for instance is so painfully hard even if you continue over and over so if you can make it to the clear screen at all in that one by all means you beat that bitch. Also some games that have limited continues like 4 then it's game over would be acceptible if it's broken or really hard, a 1cc would be optimal but beating withing the credits can be ok but notated.
If you beat a game but don't feel like you deserve it because of using a credit then maybe you should keep practicing :P
There's definitely a couple game I beat though and used a credit or two and I'm perfectly OK with

CONFESSION: Since it was released (arcade/console), I have used many, many continues in Raiden. It took me a LONG TIME before I was halfway decent in the later stages.

Shooters with limited continues? Continues are fine to use. But infinite? Its best to go 1CC, because then you'll really just end up brute forcing through, plunking down continues the entire way. Now platformers and so on are a different story, especially since they usually have limited continues 99% of the time.

If I don't use cheats and see the credit rolls I add it to my list as beaten.... That doesn't mean I wont go back to it and do more
