WTB!
WTB!
WTB!
WTB!
WTB!

The only thing for sale these days consists of repros, everdrives, or RGB kits. I guess the old timers should be happy, there are no more gougers, because no one is selling anything!

Unlike in years gone by when there was always dozens upon dozens of games available at any given time, right?

I really don't get why you have to take such passive aggressive swipes at members.  Just to troll, I suppose, but then you'll go back to claiming that you're "just defending yourself".

There used to be some games available, at least. I went back through my PMs, looking for an older one, and I had numerous purchases here. I've just noticed lately that the B/S/T is nothing but WTB threads, and I found it pretty funny.

I find it really amusing that perhaps, the people who scream gouger in every seller's thread scared potential sellers away from selling here. A case of "Be careful what you wish for." If they feel attacked by that, oh well. Pointing out shitty behavior by old timers leading to this result isn't trolling.

Yep, the regulars have completely ruined this forum.  You might as well leave then, right?

It's trolling because you're laying blame based on weak logic.  First off, you're wrong that there's no recent sale/trade threads.  Secondly, people have been called out for crappy prices on PCE and other systems too, yet there's plenty of recent sell/trade activity in those areas; if we were to blame for scant activity in the Turbob area, why are the other areas still active?  And last, why isn't there a plethora of Turbob sellers on other videogame forums?

Congrats, there are two or three sale threads in the sea of WTB threads. Way to destroy my argument with pedantic drivel.  I can't say I pay much attention to the PCE sales area. There is stuff for sale at NA, pretty much at the same rate as always.

Definitely could deter whatever particular reseller you're referring to from returning here in the future, but this forum has been private for years, and only if you think outside disgruntled complainers going around to other fourms and crying, "Watch out, don't sell on PCEFX, they'll rip you apart!" (somewhat similar to what Xak and storino03 did) would there be merit to the position that we have successfully deterred new resellers from showing up here.

There've been a lot of PCE facebook groups that have popped up which have sucked away activity in general (we lost Tats and Bernie to that), and that could explain lower activity here in general if that's what you're noticing.

I wasn't referring to any specific reseller, actually. Also, Dqualls also said in his NA thread that this place rips people apart. This place has that reputation, for sure. Raises an interesting question - is it better to have nothing for sale, than things for sale for prices that are "too high?"

That could also be a valid explanation. I don't participate in those groups, so I don't know if people aren't as big of price police there, or maybe they are just more active, and thus bring in more sellers?

Really, the dig at the old timers/price police was only the smaller part of this thread. (Hey, it is fighting street!) The real amusement is the flood of "WTB" posts, most without any serious offers, at least by reading the posts. Everyone is looking, and no one is selling. Regardless of the reason that has happened, it is definitely way different from when I first joined.

I like an influx of new people who want to talk about stuff.

I have zero interest in folks who just want to check a few items off their list of missing baseball cards.

I'm allowed to say that because my son is autistic.

Or maybe I'm just a douchebag for trying to rationalize the use of an offensive term.

But the sales threads have always been the least important element of these forums.

Yeah, I agree, I visit mainly to talk games, tech or whatever. Just to have a place to hang out. All the games can be downloaded if I really wanna play something *right now*, so my care for sales threads is low. If one pops up and I might want to own an original for the right price, great, but if another one never does, I won't lose sleep over it. What bothers or concerns me far more is lacking quality/substantive/interesting exchanges/conversations/etc. but as a gaming forum, to keep the overall conversation going around a 27 year-old retro/defunct/orphaned console is understandably challenging...

For your assertion that we drove all the sellers away to make any logical sense, it'd have to hold true for the PCE and other systems as well.  What about that do you not understand?  Sorry, tex, but it's a fact that the market has changed, with people finding less and less stuff for reasonable prices in the wild, getting priced out of the TG-16 market, moving to facebook, etc.  Piss and moan all you want that the forum meanies are at fault, but the evidence simply doesn't support your position.

Again, logic dictates that if we scared away sellers they had to go someplace else.  Next time you want to argue a point, try to back it up with something more than your own bias.

Holy fuck, I wasn't really trying to make that my grand point. I even admitted to Nightwolve perhaps his explanation was better. In fact, my original post simply said "The old timers must be happy." Nothing about fault. You've totally turned this thread into that one focus.

Also, if they HAVE increased on facebook, and have remained equal on NA, that would support my hypothesis. But I don't really have any dog in this fight. I'm not writing a dissertation on this, just having a laugh at the change. Even if its for your reasons, the fact that its a begging forum is entertaining.

Although my weight here is nothing, more than a few people I have interacted with outside of the forum.

I can attest that some people have been full on scared away because of trolling/ect on here. I have run into a few TG sales threads on FB, and they have stuff priced fair, and upon talking with them further, find out that they had joined here and left because of some of our more... Colorful members.

How true that is, and how much was bullshit I ate out of a spoon.... I couldn't tell you. But if I hear it consistently, from multiple randoms I have done business with, that has to stand for something.

Idk, Maybe its just bullshit, and they are douches who had to lower prices because they could not unload it elsewhere for whatever reason so they priced it lower and sold on the FB groups. *Shrugs*

I like it here. I think people need to get less butt hurt about stuff regarding some hazing/trolling up front. But it is something we can use to reflect on...... If we want to as a community.

I am sure some people have been scared off.

I think it is entirely plausible.

These are the same people who make no attempt to actually join a conversation (or start a new one!) about *anything* outside of buying/selling/collecting.

If this community was just about high scores (it isn't) and competition in general, I wouldn't t like it much. It would create a crappy atmosphere. We want folks to play games and enjoy them, even if they suck at the game, even if they use 99 continues, even if they never beat a game. *This* shouldn't be a novel idea... :)

I am willing (eager, actually), to talk about all the random stuff that is tangentially related to games (the boxart, marketing, character design, level design, music, sound fx, the sound the HuCARD makes when you remove/insert it into sleeve/console, the fact that I haven't really played Tome Cruise II for more than a few hours over the past decade and I can't, for the life of me, really form an opinion on it, the games that everyone hates—but they shouldn't, the games that everyone praises—but we never say anything new about it, et cetera).

It boggles my mind that someone would forget that it takes time to organically, naturally build a rapport with a community...

...and if you are determined, you will always be part of the community. Even if you dump a tarnished moniker and start anew...

...and Facebook can suck my arsehole.

I'm not judging the folks who use it (they can suck my left one), but Facebook can suck my arsehole. Whoops! Did I just offend some folks at pcefx? Possibly. They can suck my left one.

See?

1. I use FB and my feelings are forever hurt. Your butthole is dirty I am sure.

2. I am a "Newer" member, and still find it challenging at times to be able to construct a post that is both relevant, and offers more input into a conversation. But I am getting better at it and "Building that rapport".

So I agree Esrebane' (French) with what you have to say. I think people should have thicker skin, and just enjoy the cool community here.

Yeah, I know it can be challenging to jump into conversations...but, for example, I love reading first impressions of games (sooooo much less pressure than a formal "review").

That's an easy starting point.

Or just mentioning a particular song that piqued your interest, even if the game itself is bleh.

But, you are correct, it can be tough to start things off.

:)

Eh, here's the thing. Most people coming here for the first time won't have much in the way of TG-16 stuff. Unless their first haul out the door was a god haul, like mine was, they won't have jack as far as games go. So, of course they are going to want to try and get games. Its just natural. Its hard to "organically" build yourself into a community when the only games you have are Keith Courage and Tricky Kick.

Second, this community is "unique" in the crazy level to which the anti-collecting rhetoric goes. Thus, you join pretty much any other community, create a WTB post, and, in the worst case scenario, it goes ignored. Here, you have a train of people saying "OMG Fuck you collectard!" (Actually, my favorite is when some of the regulars make noobs jump through hoops to *prove* they are worthy of buying, despite not actually having anything for sale that the noob wants to buy.) This, of course, is going to push new people away.

Interestingly, we are seeing a shift to where the WTB posts are getting ignored, at least, instead of the standard dog and pony show.

This is the eternal dilemma of the newb.

I know how I would deal with the situation of being a newb  (hint: I would ask for advice on *what* to purchase, so that I could make an informed purchase).

You forget how understanding I was when you created the thread asking, "Do any HuCard games look as good as SNES games?". I was the one who said that some of the PCE games you claimed "look fantastic" actually aren't so good looking. Fellow "fanboy" nat certainly "ate you alive" by simply stating "1943 Kai looks like shit".

After you continued to post blind "fanboy" comments, literally without any substance, I continued to post articulated responses, explaining how you'd made it clear you are unfamiliar with both libraries and encouraging you to change that. I demystified the notion that CD games are technically special and picked apart comments which were critical of the SNES and its popular games. RegalSin continued to post much more rational and substantial comments than you and even though you had gone on so long without actually contributing anything to the discussion (despite your continued posts in the thread), I went so far as to post a series of screen shots for you. You got mad and accused me and everyone of calling you a fanboy, but still declined to back up any of your opinions.

As he has done many times, "old timer" HardcoreOtaku" simply stated "I love the PC Engine but the Super Famicom/SNES is simply the greatest games console of all time, anyone who disagrees lives in a world of fail." ... and nothing more, instead of eating you alive. My response to that comment will still have no affect on you, as you are still blinded by the opinions you downloaded after deciding to get into "retro gaming" and learned (perhaps first on reddit?) that <Nintendo. I said what I've always believed: "It's cool to have favorites, but saying that anyone who doesn't worship what you do is wrong is the only true fail."

I then went on to once again quantify my theories as to why the SNES gets unfairly bashed and why fanboys of opposing console sides actually clash over their shared beliefs.

The fact is that you, like most SNES fanboys (of which I do not group you with), will never appreciate the SNES as much as I do. I actually take the games for what they are and don't base a game's quality solely on the opinions of others. That's why I've been so encouraging of your actually playing games and expressing your thoughts and express myself, how much that elevates you over so many others in this forum and elsewhere. Unfortunately, you still carry the mentality that anyone who doesn't always agree with you is an antagonist. As you picked up early on, there must always be a console war and everyone must choose a side.

This is why I often make clear that I don't like picking favorites and that, although I don't believe that <PC Engine, or like it more than all other consoles, I've come to the conclusion that it is technically my favorite for several reasons, which I've often stated on here.

You also stated that the PCE is your favorite in that same thread... but did not explain at all how or why.

Again, if you actually read my posts instead of just scanning for ammo, you'd know for a while now that I treat Fighting Street for what it actually is: simply an unmoderated section. And would not expect me to join your console war battle.

Wow! Massive block of text! I didn't think you'd actually make such a lengthy reply, BT. I only wrote a single sentence. Don't worry, I did indeed read your whole post like you want me to.

Just looked up that thread you mentioned, don't even remember it. I made that 4 whole years ago! I'm not sure why you still remember such an insignificant thread. I was basically a little kid when I made that thread.

I don't have much to say on the matter, and at this point I'm kinda burnt out on retro games for now. A lot of the discussion here now is mostly sales, and some translations. Xanadu II looks pretty cool, but it's not on my mind right now. Been playing a lot of ps4 lately. Ever play bloodborne?

It's fighting street so I think I'm supposed to make a lengthy counterargument that causes an unsinkable debate that lasts several pages, but I'm not feeling it tonight.

I am positive that I have somehow dragged myself into another mess. So roast me if you want, I'll answer if you want, because everyone here knows me as "the young inexperienced member" anyway. Might as well ask my specific opinions on the topic and we can align them with yours.

I'm out of options, your move.

Wait, people still like the SNES?  I would have thought people would have come to their senses by now.

It has always been a great console.

The trendy fads come and go (loving it, hating it), but it remains a great console.

Of course, compared to NES/Famicom, the SNES is a big turd.

Specifically: Karnov (NES) > Nearly the entire SFC/MegaDrive libraries, combined.

And that's a generous, objective formula I am proposing.

Anyway...

I joke around a lot, and I enjoyed El Viento...

I recently played El Viento and Valis II back-to-back.

But El Viento is not that much better than Valis II. In fact, El Viento has lots of really silly (some may say STOOPID) sections that are OK the first 1-2 times you play the game, but they get old, real fast. Here I am, 10+ years since I played the game? And I was like: Noooo! Not the platform I just stand on whilst it makes gratuitous trips around the screen (with no enemies or challenges). Not the exploding bricks with the irritating sound effects! Not the exploding, pixelated octopi! Not the boring "buildings" that I hop up and hop down in.

Still, at least El Viento tried to be creative (variety!) in its platforming (borrowing ideas from different games), whereas Valis II has linear, basic, uninspired platforming.

So, a player is left with the feeling that each game could have been executed in a more engaging way (especially for multiple replays).

I choose Valis II for the comparison because it is the most average game in the series (focusing purely on the game, not the music/presentation of story).

WHAT'S THE POINT OF ALL THIS?

I wish El Viento had been given a little bit more love and development time. I think it really could have become a much stronger game. I would still need the fidgety scrolling to be fixed, but it has potential.

Same goes for Valis II...just a little bit more creativity in designing the levels (or, at least, insert additional challenging/creative levels) and it really could have been something more special. Valis III has many "meh" mediocre level designs, too...but Valis III has a few that are inspired, as well.

This is all it takes to improve a game with your existing assets: better level design.

SO MANY GAMES SUFFER FROM THIS FLAW.

Note: I was on the toilet, drinking coffee, when I composed this post.

Note: I want to go back and play Earnest Evans, but El Viento is GODLY compared to Earnest Evans.

Note: Imperfect games have provided me much enjoyment in my life.

Note: Karnov (NES) really *is* better than most games in the cosmos.

Note: I really am on the toilet. And I really do have loose stools. I thought I was "finished". But I wasn't. So I added all these "notes"...but I should have called them addendum.

Note: is "addenda" singular and "addendum" plural? I didn't know that!

Note: what did I eat last night? Jesuschristo!

Note: SRSLY.

Note: don't you hate it when you get a headache from inhaling fumes? WHY DOESN'T THE FAN IN THIS DAMN BATHROOM DO ITS JOB???!!!

Note: this is my third edit to the thread. I am actually on the verge of passing out. Also, I am not sure "addenda" is even a word. I think the fumes are affecting my brainwaves.

Addenda: saying "shite" is so much more satisfying than "shit"...but is the phonetics? Or the fact that it is American vs. British? I feel that it is the phonetics. It is just more CATHARTIC to yell "SHITE!" when your entire world is crumbling away. SHITE! as your legs go numb. Your brain goes numb.

Addenda: The fact that I am actually taking a shite is not lost on me, either.

Addenda: My son just brought me a crayon and a chalkboard so I can continue to post on this thread, locally...

PsychoKobold...apparently cares about making PCEFX great again... Where resellers are once again respected worldwide for the important services that they provide. Where noobs can also buy in peace without flak, disrespect, heckling, etc...

Do you wanna build up forum membership, activity, vibrancy, etc. again ? Heed DarkKo's warnings... We must temper our flamer excesses, our reseller roasts, etc.! Let them respectfully both resell and buy in peace... That is the blueprint for future success and it was right in front of us all along! We got a little carried away over the years I suppose... ;)

http://retrochronicle.com/why-video-game-collectors-should-forever-retire-the-word-reseller/
QuoteThere comes a time when a group of people attaches so much hyperbolic stigma to a single word that it becomes necessary to retire the word altogether. For those in the video game collecting community, that word is "resellers." If there's one thing that video game collectors love almost as much as collecting and playing video games, it's whining about those who buy games and sell them for a profit.

But here's a thought: not only are resellers simply participating ethically in a free market, capitalist system, they're actually providing a hugely important service to retro game collectors everywhere. No, really. But I'll get to that more later.
Let's start by retiring the word "reseller" as this writer recommends... Who's with me ?? :P
