2009'ish I used to use primarily photobucket as well, but they handicapped some features which made me switch over to imgur. Probably too much advertising uploading pictures, or they made the process extra difficult.

And besides, broken images suck

There are dozens of replacements, though. There's no need to ever use Photobucket or Flickr or even the frequently down Imgur these days.

It's a pity, since I used some other photo hosting sites before, but Photobucket allowed me to group pics into albums, and sub-albums, etc. Also I had the impression Photobucket would last longer than others.

I have my own paid webspace that I could use for photo hosting, but I don't think it would be able to take the traffic load.

Speaking of traffic load, is there a tool that let me analyse which of my pics must have been responsible for overloading the 10 GB traffic limit?? Aside from robots/crawlers, I can't imagine how my pics could have been popular enough to trip the limit. All that I have uploaded are some hobby pics, e.g. R/C cars, model kits, trains, etc. Not even ebay usage. And let's say 90% are just shared as thumbnails on forums, the remaining 10% being posted as full images, and I usually compress them enough in pixel and file size to make sure they don't go into MBytes.

I have been using Flickr for the last 10 years or so I think and while it did have some issues it's been a lot better for me in the last several years for sure.  I use Flickr for most image hosting since I already have a Yahoo account as well.

I'm still using photobucket, and am being eyeball-fucked by ads.

All the time.

And it makes doing shit slow.

Eyeball-fucked.

Same here, xele, though I don't think I've been with Flickr quite that long.  I've no complaints about it; it's sure as hell better than what I was using before (imageshack?).

Imgur always seems to be up for me. Then again I'm not on it all the time.

SignOfZeta

Just buy space for $7 a month from some ISP down the street. That way you get full quality full sized pics linked with one click and if anything stops working they work for you, so they fix it. You know, how it used to be. The adversion to spending so little money is pointless if it just ends up fucking you over and pissing you off constantly. All the ad fueled shit is terrible because YOU AREN'T THE CUSTOMER, the advertisers are.

I already told about that I have a paid web space and how it would react to such traffic load.
Also, most ISP declare the extensive use as a picture host as a violation of their terms of service.

I was just using photobucket again goddamnit.

I think I found out why my PB account has been temporarily suspended all of a sudden.
There was a change in terms of service on June 26, 2017.

Quotefree account : Each individual Member gets one free account that provides 2 GB of free storage or space available for your original photo files, or videos under 10min. The free account does not allow any image linking or 3rd party image hosting. If a free account Member exceeds their Content Limit, their account will be immediately suspended and they will need to become a "Paying Member" (defined below) in order to continue accessing their account. You can upgrade to a Plus account at any time.

I've decided to sit and wait to see what happens with PB.
Good thing: I still have got all my pics on my harddrive.
In the meantime, I'll happily use my old account on abload.de

From my experience most hosting sites are this way. That's why I never use them. WTF good is having an image online if you can't link to it without sending people to their shifty fucking site that needs 10 clicks to get the full sized version of?

I literally have no idea WTF you are talking about. You must be talking to the shittiest ISP on the planet. I've never heard of any kind of restrictions like that and I fail to see what their reasoning would even be. I mean...why? I know why Photobarf and whatever do it, torturing people with ads keeps them in business.

To be clear, "ISP" and "web hosting service" used to be more interchangeable. I'm speaking of hosting. I use 1&1 Internet but I don't see any reason to recommend them over hundred or thousand of others.

Arkhan, for reasons I already told two times in this thread.

And Zeta, you obviously didn't read your hoster's terms of service. Or you pay them enough so they allow you doing that.

o.pwuaioc

Extensive use as a picture host means you can't start your own Photobucket with them. It doesn't mean you can't host your own pictures.

Ah, I enjoy it  quite a bit. Albums, nice app for uploading photos, super easy to share links to images with various scales for thumbnails or blown up images, free and minimal ads.

I'd suggest anyone looking for a cheap easy to link-to image hosting solution check out imgur.com

blueraven

The real problem with Photobucket lies in the updated interface.... A few years ago the whole system was HTML based, and hyperlinking was easy; You could sort through your images using a series of logarithms, and there weren't hundreds of popup windows showing you hi-res images of a stupid camera or a field of grass with payment options for upgraded hosting.

A few years ago they went to a java based platform using shittons of ads, and they made the whole website look like an iPhone app. If your plugins aren't updated, and you don't have a halfway decent graphics card, you will be waiting for 3 minutes or so for all of the extemporaneous shit to load. On top of this, whatever window you are using greys out the other windows, and makes switching between panes more of a pain in the ass.

NOW you cant sort through your images. The ads in the free version are becoming unbearable. The popups take up so much bandwith it feels like you have to wait in line at the supermarket to retrieve the link to an old project. Additionally, the sidebar has become hopelessly fucked: Instead of having a simple tree that is always visible to you, listing the various directories and subdirectories, you have to click on the "Library" java tab which reloads the entire page, and gives you a two-inch-vertical peephole into your archives. You then have to close a few ads, expand the sidebar, and open each subdirectory individually. EVERY TIME. and there are ads every step of the way which jump out at you like daggers when you're waiting for the link to pop up, which is a SECOND poupup window that has a flash plugin. You sometimes have to update your flash player JUST to retrieve your link.

I'm going to be migrating away from the platform after this. I'm only at 2% of my bandwith on my account but this has just become unbearable.

LostFlunky

I got the email today.  I have about 30 pictures linked to forum posts.  So long fucks!

o.pwuaioc

Postimage.org - zero issues, simple HTML. I think ImageCurl is also supposed to be good.

Of course I advise everyone to have their own online hosting which is pretty cheap all things considered. Why pay for Dropbox when you can upload to your own website and access at whim?

ClodBusted

Thanks to Adblock, I don't see any ads on PB.

I once turned adblock off just for shits & giggles - WTF.

Another thing why I don't want to use my paid web space for hosting pics embedded into forums: Every idiot and his mom would be able to discover my real name and postal adress thanks to a Who-Is search on my domain name. And I don't need everybody to know my name is Hans Mustermann.

Even worse, when creating a website in Germany, as per law you have to provide your name, adress and phone number into your website. Otherwise you'd risk getting invoices from angry lawyers who just use who-is services (e.g. denic.de) to investigate on your name and address.

By the way, this way I was able to find out Tobias Reich's postal adress and also further discover his phone number from the yellow pages/phone book.

Exactly my thoughts.
By the way, do you still have a copy of your pics on your computer? Because apparently Photobucket may give trouble downloading your own hosted pics from their servers once they burn you for hotlinking.

LostFlunky

Just downloaded (a zip file) all of my images, since I couldn't get them one by one any more.  The zip file contains all of my uploads, but at about 1/10th their original size.  What a shit show!

Once I downloaded everything (I have it all backed up anyway), I deleted my account.

Get used to seeing broken hotlinks around message boards for a while, because this is going to happen to all of them, regardless of how many hotlinks you have...

They seem to be missing the fact that the photos people upload are their real product - they can't sell overpriced prints without photos... Having them hotlinked on popular message boards gets more people to see them, hence potentially more sales...  Whatever.. if this works out for them and they sell a bunch of $500/yr subs, I guess it will just be further proof that this planet sucks.

Does not work for Germany (Denic).

xcrement5x

Yeah, in the US at least you can to a private reg on your webserver to avoid the issue.  I don't blame you there.

Personally, considering Flickr has worked so well for me I see no need to use my own bandwidth to host pictures.  Plus Flickr is indexed and searchable instead of my host so other people can find stuff easier, I've had people ask me in depth questions about stuff before which is always kind of neat.  Imgur is also fine but I feel like the people there are kind of toxic about voting stuff, so I rarely post stuff public.

What kind of idiot would trust a free image hosting site with the only existing copies of his photos? Do you guys need to learn what a "backup" is? Fuck, that would actually be less than not having a backup. No main copy, no redundant backup copy, just a copy on some ad based website that could go out of business or be bought out or make itself unusable overnight with no warning.

Does anyone know if there is a website out there that teaches people how to use computers? I mean, I'm too dumb to use Mednafen so I'm hardly an example but...geez, even I have my limits.

Yeah I was just agreeing with Zeta. If pictures are important to you, keep them backed up. Hdd, blank discs (lol), flash drive w/e. Just...something. Don't trust a shitty free image hosting site.

Are you talking to some specific person?

Or are you just bitching around like an old gramps or frustrated IT tech guy, in the hope of getting attention? Because what you do is just stating the obvious.

LostFlunky

I am pretty sure that Zeta's rant was not going to have an impact on anyone here...  You take a chance getting up in the morning, crossing the street, using free image hosts or sticking your face in a fan. Clodbuster's post was a notification that the full size images were no longer available on the PB site once they locked your account and my followup post said the same thing and added that you can still download a zip of reduce size images...(although it doesn't state anywhere that they are holding the real goods hostage.... )

The only reason I cared about not being able to access the Photobucket images anymore is that I want to restore the dead trail of hotlinks I have left around the internet... Whatever is in my Photobucket account is what I have linked.  A quick scan of the PB gallery and I know what I have to do.  Without it I would have to go to several forums and look at my posting history for the last 5 years and then muddle through 17 years of images on my server to find about 30 pics...

Arkhan Asylum

had to update my links to imgur instead of photobucket because it fucked up my stuffffff
