And I mean the very first game you played- no continues.

One comes to mind for me- Coryoon.  First time I played it- I think I had 4 or 5 guys remaining after finishing.

I suck far too much at video games in general to have ever done this :)

Star Parodia and Bonk III come to mind. Probably Bonk's Adventure as well.

Sinistron

Man I thought I'd sail straight through Star Parodia the first time I played it.  I was like "Dang this is easy."  Then suddenly there was a spot that just started robbing my extra guys like crazy and prevented me from beating it the first time.  One of my favorite games though for sure.  "Star parodja! Boomba!"

There are tons of games I've beaten on the first run, though not all on the TurboGrafx. However, most of those memories have been lost over the years.

I think on the NES there's a crapload that I ran straight through but the memories are fading.  Damn NES had the cheapest endings.  More than half of them just read "the end" over blackscreen and froze.

I don't remember any, as I usually do some pretty crazy, careless things the first time first few plays.  Like a kid in a candy store, I gotta try everything.

I always intentionally stop myself getting too far on my first few goes of a game. If things seemed too easy I'd not use continues or bump up the difficulty. Unfortunately I tended to get bored of the games before getting to the end so I have a lot of unfinished titles in my collection. I am learning slowly not to do this.

JoshTurboTrollX

Reading some of your posts makes me think I truly SUCK ASS at video games.  I think I took down Riot Zone on my first try, but I definately used at least one continue.

As for Ninja Gaiden (NES) how the hell................?

You know I was talking about the pc-engine port, right? It's cake walk compared to the nes version.

nat

yeah, I probably would've beat the Turbo version on the first try too but I had to turn it off because I ran out of time and had to go do something else.

I always heard the game was excruciatingly hard, but later found out people must have been talking about a different port.

Is the NES version the same game as the Turbo version? The SMS version is a completely different game.

Keranu

Back in the day, me and my bros rented (or maybe bought) the Turtles Hyperstone Heist for Genesis and beat it the first time playing through. Ever since then whenever we beat a game in one sitting or a game we rent, we say we "Hyperstone Heisted" it.

Pretty much. The PCE port has better graphics and sprites, and no changes were made to the original story. There are few minor changes to character names like Jaquio is Devildoer and Ken Hayabusa is now Joe for reasons I've no idea. Aside from having no challenge at all, I've only one other complaint and thats the soundtrack. It's no where near as good as the Nes. I prefer to play the Nes version.

Sinistron

well I take my hat off.    =D>  I haven't beaten the PCE engine version yet.
and damn I miss Last Alert and the Guy Kazama madness.  I remember back in the day I had a friend who made these audio collage tapes- they were pretty much a headache- but then I made one to rival his and I remember it being an audio collage of classical music, jefferson airplane, the funniest dialogue bits from Last Alert and some other silliness.  I wish to god I still had it so I could have you guys hear it.  It was so absurd.  I have to check my old shoeboxes maybe it's around somewhere.

The soundtrack seems to fluctuate wildly in quality throughout. I'll have to pick up the NES version and see how it compares.

OldRover

Riot Zone.

And I too took down Hyperstone Heist the first time through. Of course, having a lot of play experience with Turtles In Time helped a great deal.

Well I don't have any PC-E ones to talk about, I spent about 20 minutes thinking about it though and I have come up with these 4 games.  I am pretty sure they are the only 4 too.

Rez - DC:  Still an awesome game though and one of my top 10 all time favorites.  The fun thing is you can make up your own challenge modes if you are inventive enough.  For example you can choose to start the game in the 1 hit and you are dead form, and then make it your challenge to get to the final form before getting to the last level (well the final form you can get to with powerups) and if you get hit once at any time, it is game over.

Wipeout Pulse - PSP: The tracks are entertaining, but no where nearly as hard as say the classic tracks in Wipeout Pure.  I will have to revise this though once some new tracks are available for download.  The stock tracks are somewhat easy I think mainly because the play control at 333mz cpu speed is so nearly perfect it blows me away.

Vib Ribbon - PS1: Just about anyone good at music games should be able to beat the levels it comes with, without loosing to one level.  The only way I can see you failing a level is if one of the songs makes you laugh too much and you tear up.

Super Puzzle Fighter II: Turbo - Arcade:  My friend told me to choose Ken.  He was right, Ken rocks in this game (and others).  I'm usually more of a Ryu person though.  The first few levels I got through by the skin of my teeth, but once I had the hang of the combos, this game seemed rather easy.  I have played it a lot more now over the years and I think you are most likely to loose through bad luck or by choosing a character who gives nice formations of blocks to destroy.  Some of the characters are down right aweful in this game.  Whoever balanced it should be forced for program Street Fighter (1) VS Kung Fu on the Saturn.

Impressive - Ninja Gaiden was a beast and known for it's difficulty (check the gamespot review)

Edit - i've only taken a quick glance at the PC-Engine version so not sure on that, but the NES version took me lots of "sick days" from school to beat!!

I beat Final Fantasy Mystic Quest over the first weekend I rented it, and I also beat the NES version of Dragon Spirit on my first rental.

I don't know if I've ever beaten a game on a first play run though. I'm usually not focused enough. I get too much of a kick out of taking in all the sights and sounds.

I'm pretty sure the first time I sat down to play Galaga 90 I beat it, but technically it wasn't the first time I played the game since I have it on MAME and used to play it in the arcades. I haven't beat the arcade port yet though.

I just got Riot Zone, among other things.

Just came back from playing it, and beating it, on my first try. :)

I don't know anyone who hasn't beat Riot Zone the first time through.

Why is this game so easy?

guyjin

the more important question here is, why is there no Final Fight for the PCE?

Turbo D

Thats because you can play as Cody in riot zone!

Just completed Download 2. I just got it yesterday (from D-Lite), today was my first time playing it.

Although to be honest I did have to use a couple continues. But only because the last boss is a real pain in the ass. The rest of the game was much too easy. A far cry from the first Download, which after playing 2 I believe to be the better game. The original Download ranks as one of my "must-own" shooters for the Turbo.

Keranu

Wow, interesting to hear, nat. I've been wanting to play Download 2 for years and I thought for sure it would be better than the first. Aside from the awesome opening cinema, I don't like the first Download really (maybe it's too hard for me!).

Download (the first) is awesome for a number of reasons. First, the level design is killer. The graphics are pretty damn nice for a 1990 release, with many levels featuring some pretty cool parallax (especially the pyscho-cyber levels). The bosses are mostly all incredibly large, creatively designed, and require strategy to overcome. The gameplay dynamic of having to choose your weapon setup before starting every level is pure gold (especially the first time you play through since you just have to guess), as is the unique "life" system the game employs. The game as a whole is generally very challenging.

Why Download 2 is inferior in a nutshell: while the bosses retain the same creative design, they pose no real threat whatsoever (final boss excluded). They are essentially harmless lunks that leisurely hurl a few non-threatening projectiles in your general direction. The levels feel more linear, with each level being a "stage" (9 in all), and all are approximately the same length. The game itself is easier overall... This can be attributed to the fact that the unique weapon selection and life system is gone, replaced by a traditional life reserve and an arsenal you can cycle through at will using the I button.

If anyone is interested I'll create a new topic and do a more detailed comparison.

Turbo D

It'd be cool to see a new topic about it  :)
