2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

Isn't this issue already being discussed elsewhere?  Why start a new thread?  I'll keep my discussions to the existing one.

You mean you're not going to vote for option 3? I think he made it just for you, lol.

The other discussion is taking place on a EGM thread in the TG16 area. Since Supergrafx is PcEngine related we should do it here, and as a poll the numbers become clear as to how many members likes what alot more overall.

Yea lol,I think its funny whenever someone says it controls better on Genesis. The game plays perfectly fine control wise on either system. Joe can't take a light jibe it seems,so he prefers discussing it elsewhere....

I vote "I don't give a fuck because that game sucks on any system".

I won't lie to you. Yes, it's really fucking hard, and to me, it's not worth dying over and over on that first level.

I bought Ultimate Ghosts And Goblins for PSP, and I gave it away, because it's hard, and the CGI is shit.

gameplay & control  are about the same between the MegaDrive/Genesis and SuperGrafx versions.
Ghouls n ghosts is the EASIEST game of the entire series.

Ghosts 'n Goblins - VERY HARD
Ghouls 'n ghosts - MILDLY Challenging - many levels are easy though
Super Ghouls n ghosts - VERY DIFFICULT
Super Ghouls n Ghosts Remix (GBA) VERY DIFFICULT
Ultimate Ghosts n Goblins - INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT

the music (perhaps not sound effects but definitely the music) is better on the Sega version, technically, and also in my opinion.

graphics, in ALMOST every way, are significantly better in the SuperGrafx version.

The SuperGrafx version, although it preserves much more of the graphics from the arcade, is still a long way off from being arcade-exact.     8 meg vs 32 meg PCB, there's no way around that.  but for a SUPER-charged 8-bit system with the same CPU and sound chip as PC-Engine, with only a 2x upgrade in sprite pushing ability 2x the VRAM, and 4x the work ram (32k) up from PCE's 8k but still less than Genesis' 64k,  you got the best translation of Ghouls 'n Ghosts on a home platform for the early 90s.  the U.S. would not get an arcade-quality release until just a few years ago on PS2, PSP and Xbox with CCCv1.

Comparisons

SUPERGRAFX
not-colorful, un-detailed ^pixelated trees^ of the parallax background

ARCADE
nice parallax forest-swamp scene^ with lots of detail and color

equivalent scene from MegaDrive-Genesis
completely missing ^stumpy-roped bridge, ^missing parallax layer

No prob with that. The game is def hard, just not for everyone.

I like that we have different versions of the same game each with different levels of quality compared to the original 1988 CPS arcade coin-op.

you might not agree with me but here's how I rate the visuals as far as how close they are to the arcade. this isn't an exact science, or how technically close each version is, just what they look like at a quick glance

MegaDrive/Genesis - 60%
SuperGrafx  - 80%
X68000 - 99~100%
Saturn - 96%
PS1 / PS2 / Xbox (they're the same version) 98%

Whats the problem with the Saturn version. I didn't know there was one. I only played that import Generations disc once for it,so I didn't notice problems. Got any details on that?

Kitsunexus

Even though I hate this game, I have to ask, what is so different about the X68000 version that it only gets 99%?

extremely minor differences in hue.    not less colors, just ever so slightly different.  it's hardly noticable.

it's pixel-exact.  I guess i could say it's 100%.

the Saturn, PS1/PS2/Xbox versions have noticable differences, although they're still right on par with the arcade.

Cool, thanks for the info. Is this just because of the X68000's color pallete?

The Xbox version is way too dark, or at least my copy is.  It looks horrible.  The Saturn version, when you kneel, Arthur's knees do not go behind the blades of grass.  BLASPHEMY!

it's not just your copy, it's everyone's copy.

the part that's too dark is, the distant backgrounds.  it's the same with the PS2 version.  this is because both  Xbox/PS2 versions are actually the PS1 version from Capcom Generation 2 released in 1998.

the Saturn version didn't have this problem of dark distant backgrounds (it had other problems though such as being at a different resolution so everything is 'fatter' and some of the right & left edges are not visible where you are at an edge.

the grass 'depth', it's ability to obscure parts of Arthur, whether he's kneeling or not, is only present in the arcade version.  i wonder if that was a bug though.

most of the games in Capcom Classics Collection vol 1 are just the CG2 games together.
i.e. the Now Loading screen in the SF2 games were from the PS1 CG5. they load fast on Xbox though.

Final Fight and Forgotten Worlds were newly ported just for CCCv1

elnino

Everyone knows that the SuperGrafx port is clearly superior to the MD version, no chance against the PCB though. The graphics of the MD port are so bad that they affect the game play significantly, in a bad way of course! In lvl 4 e.g. the appearance of these worms on the ice platforms is not announced by some rocks coming out the ground, they are just there, instantly!

My vote's for the SuperGrafx version (duh - this is pcenginefx, not sega-16), though I prefer it for the visuals more so than the audio.  I have no problems with either versions' tunes, as they're both decent, but neither will be in my top ten list of video game music.

It's a shame there's no vote for "I don't like GnG much."

nat

So how 'bout that Ghosts 'n Goblins on the NES?

(BTW, I voted for SGX....)

Ceti Alpha

Ghouls 'n Ghosts is a relatively easy game when compared to Ghosts 'n Goblins. Ghosts 'n Goblins is just too random in terms of what the enemies do and whether or not you can get the shield weapon. The Red Devils are next to impossible to beat; they're harder than most of the bosses. Not to mention you can't shoot up and you don't get the magic armour.

I third that.

The magic armor is useless. It doesn't even add an extra layer of protection before you get buck naked.

The very first time I got the magic armor I thought, "This probably takes 2 hits to be destroyed."  Nope

I never understood why arthur kept going to the same blacksmith; you'd think after the 100th time his armor shattered from one hit, he'd get a clue and go elsewhere for his armor needs.

Well put.

Personally, Ghouls 'n Ghosts is the ONLY game of the series I like.  Shooting up kicks ass.  However the ONLY weapons I will dare to use are the spear, dagger and the magic thing you get on the second loop.  The only other semi-tolerable weapon is the spiked disk thingy.  All other weapons suck (fact), and I commit suicide rather than pick them up.  I also try to get rid of the spear as soon as I can for the dagger.

Ceti Alpha

QuoteThe very first time I got the magic armor I thought, "This probably takes 2 hits to be destroyed."  Nope Shocked
Yeah, I always forget that the magic armour still only takes one hit and then you're back in your undies. I guess the game would just be too easy that way.
