Well? What do you think of Super Mario Galaxy?

The game is out, and everyone but me is saying that it is the best game ever made or will ever be made.  I have the game.  I haven't finished it yet, but here are my opinions so far.

-Mario looks like a toddler with a mustache.  Seriously.  Same exact body as a toddler.
-Game is pretty fun.
-Wii controls are absolutely unnecessary.  Game would be far better with real controls.
-Camera can piss me off at times and causes problems with depth perception in some areas.
-Great graphics... for the Gamecube.
-Press MUTE for the "SUPER MARIO GALAXY!!!!!!!!!" that is shouted in your face when you click on the "disc channel".
-2nd good game for the Wii.  I don't like Zelda games, so there can be an argument made that the Wii actually has 3 good games (the 3rd being Metroid Prime 3).
-Annoying buzzer when you have 1 hit point left.
-Good music.

Turbo D

I think this game is gay. I bet you guys already knew I was going to say that, haha. I mean come on, Mario is buzzing around in that bee suit like a fag. Nintendo has changed since we were kids  [-(

It can't be as bad as Mario Sunshine.  What are the Wii controls like?  I've been holding off buying it since I don't want to be forced to waggle like a retard, I wish every game was like NiGHTS and had optional real controls.

nat

When did this come out? I had no idea. My wife is going to flip..... Yup, there she goes.

I'm sure we'll be buying it soon and I'll get back to you with my thoughts.

But like GUTS, I'm curious about the controls.

ParanoiaDragon

I actually kind of liked Mario Sunshine, it was Mario 64 I never could get into, & I have both the N64 & DS versions.  Probably won't play the new Mario for awhile, since it'll be a long time before I can pay money to get a Wii.  But, I always prefer 2D when it comes to Mario.  There is Super Paper Mario, which I've heard is great.  I'm waiting for my one friend that has a Wii to pick it up.
IMG

Joe Redifer

I will describe the controls.  I am here FOR YOU!

You must use the nunchuck.

Wii Remote:
-Press A to jump.
-Waggle to spin and attack enemies.  You will be doing this A LOT!
-Waggle to spin in hollow stars which launch you to new "planets" within the level.
-Waggle in mid-jump to spin and jump higher.
-Constant onscreen cursor follows where you are pointing.
-Point at "star bits" to collect them.  Star bits feed hungry lumas 'n shit.  Tacked on, for sure.
-B button (trigger) shoots the star bits.  This can stun some enemies (like spinning into them), but it wastes star bits and it much slower.

Nunchuck:
-You can waggle the nunchuck instead of the Wii Remote to accomplish the same exact things.
-Analog pad moves Mario around.
-Big shoulder button crouches or does an ass stomp in mid jump.
-Little shoulder button attempts to recenter the camera, but usually the game does not allow you to do this.

Yes, the game is better than Sunshine.  But in my opinion Mario 64 is better, and Super Mario World is better than that.

GUTS

Ugh sounds kind of lame, I'll probably wait until it drops to players choice or I can find a cheap used one.

Kitsunexus

"AND IF-AH YOU ORDER AT AH GAMEAH-STOP YOU CAN AH-SEE ME IN MY AH-BUMBLEBEE SUIT!"

Yeah, fuck Mario. Sunshine was mediocre at (the most generous use of the word) best.

Call me when Mario 128 comes out.

Agreed. I love that game.

As far as the 3D Marios go, I never even bothered to buy Mario Sunshine. That whole Mario-with-a-SuperSoaker thing with a bunch of non-Mushroom Kingdom characters just looked kind of lame. Not to mention the whole thing just looked very un-Mario-like. I can't picture myself having an enjoyable experience playing it.

Mario 64 was OK, but I never played all the way through it. I've started it a bunch of times with the idea in mind to finish it but I never do. It's too hard because of the N64's shitty-ass analog stick and the game just controls horribly. Plus the camera is fucked up 75% of the time.

I'll wait to pass verdict on Galaxy until I play it, but as of now, I'll take a 2D Mario adventure over any of the 3D incarnations.

Maybe he's pulling your chain, but I'm not. That game is fucking awesome. I have it on NES cartridge and also on my Apple //c+. The Apple version is actually pretty damn good. I've logged a shitload of hours with that game. I used to keep a running high score list (since the game doesn't save a high score table) of my top scores.

Hey, personally, I just said I'll wait to pass judgement until I play it. And then I went on to comment about how the previous two 3D Mario games kind of sucked.

I don't think anyone here has really played it except for Joe so I wouldn't pay attention to the smoke coming out of their asses.

Kitsunexus

I never stated I played the game. I simply:

1. Made fun of the ridiculous preorder recording.

2. Stated that I did not enjoy Super Mario Sunshine (excepting the graphics, the music, and Yoshi).

3. Stated that I would only care if the TRUE sequel to Super Mario 64 came out.

Although I can't deny that Super Mario Bros was a well-made and iconic game, I never really cared for it that much.  The US version of Super Mario Bros 2 was the first proper Mario game I ever enjoyed.  I never really got in to Super Mario 3, not sure why.  Super Mario World kicked all sorts of ass.  Hated Yoshi's Island due to the sound alone.  Super Mario 64 was awesome.  Yes, it had many flaws, but it was one of the first games like that so we were pretty stupid.  Super Mario Sunshine was boring as all hell.  Super Mario Galaxy is definitely better but I'm already getting a bit bored, plus I hate waggle controls! I want to play with a real controller!

No it's just unlike all the other sites in the world, this one is (relatively) free from Nintendo fanboys (they will defend and praise everything that says Nintendo on it, even though it is almost always bad/crap). That's why I like this place.

This game seems all right, no more no less.

PS: Super Mario World is the best game ever made (this is an unbiased truth, not opinion).

What is REALLY boggling is deciding whether you used "fucking" as a qualifying verb for the adjective "stupid" for emphasis or if you somehow saw procreation where we did not.

Also, were you talking about the recording being played through the phone being stupid, or were you talking about how it is stupid to record the phone playing the message?

I don't get why everyone seems so "pissed" over a Mario phone call, haha. You only get one if you pre-ordered it from GameStop right? I actually think that's a good idea since it lets you know when you can pick up your game. I wonder if they're going to do that for Smash Bros?

What I really love about it is how the game takes a lot of inspiration from SMB1 and 3 to give it that "quiet feel". My favorite was how before each level a blank screen would appear showing a Mario face and how many lives he has left. It's also pretty straight forward and easy to jump right into the game, which is something that's desperately needed for games these days! I just wish the game wouldn't give you so many 1-ups and reset them when you restart and controlled more like the NES ones. I was so glad to hear that there was no Yoshi and other new skool Mario characters, though for some reason they still included King Koopa's son or whatever he is.

Quote from: Keranu on 11/17/2007, 04:38 PMI was so glad to hear that there was no Yoshi
Yoshi is a douche. Or rather, he became a douche. In SMW and SMW2 he was pretty cool. Yoshi's Story is pretty badass I guess.

The worst thing that happened to the Mario franchise was when they gave everybody voices. I always thought of the Mario world kind of like it was portrayed in the movie. Then they started adding voices to everyone and everything and it started feeling like a bunch of fucking toddlers or something. I thought the GBA "Advance" remakes of the classic 2D Mario games were pretty damn cool. Except for the voices. I can't even playing the friggin' things because of them, despite the games themselves being what I would consider the "definitive" versions of said titles. I always loved Luigi's jumping in SMB2, and they "fixed" the other games in the "Advance" series so his jumping was consistently high. I've heard people say that high jump sucks because you can't control it. I say those people are whiny losers that don't know how to play video games. When utilized properly, that high jump was the most useful tool in SMB2, hands down.

Does anyone know: is there any kind of cheat or option to disable the voices in the Advance titles?

Joe Redifer

I agree that Mario looks like a toddler.  His body is that of a 2 to 3 year old with a mustache and giant gloves.

I got SMG yesterday as a birthday gift and I have to say, it's pretty damn awesome. I played for a good few hours today. Certainly light years better than Sunshine, and dare I say, better than Mario 64.

The controls are actually pretty standard with relatively little "Wii gimmicky" stuff thrown in, and what is, seems to mix really well with the standard stuff. Joe wasn't kidding when he said it's one of the best looking Wii games so far. Graphics are really, really sharp.

The one downfall for me is the game is kind of easy. The toughest part I've encountered so far is where you have to surf on the back of this sting-ray down these rapids that are suspended in mid-air. There are no sides so if you fall off, you die. Think of the Rainbow Road in Mario Kart 64. This part was a welcome challenge, because the 8 or so stars I collected before that were just a breeze to get. Still, the rapids weren't too tough and I nailed it easily after a couple tries.

So far, great game overall, a must-own for anyone with a Wii.

Thank you. At first it was kind of neat, I'll admit it. But the novelty quickly wore off and it just became grating / obnoxious.

Truth be told, though, I can get annoyed with a lot of games when they have repetitive sound effects that are obnoxious. Dance Dance Revolution is a big offender here (with the inane comments... I don't mind inanity, but it needs to be delivered with gusto!)

As much as I enjoy the game, I don't need two copies. So this latest copy is available for trade if someone wants to trade me another Wii game (I'd like Metroid Prime 3). The copy I have available is still in shrinkwrap, even has the Internal Use Only/Not For Retail Sale sticker on it. Not like that makes it any more valuable or anything, but still.
