2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

:pcgs: :pcgs: Here is EGM's 1993 Buyer's Guide (.pdf) (I'm just learning how to use the OCR software, so the text embedded in the .pdf is pretty garbled...) :pcgs: :pcgs:

See which TG-16 titles earned some respect from EGM editors (hint: Cosmic Fantasy 2, Air Zonk, Gate of Thunder, etc.). Also, inspect the enigmatic (and unreleased) Bonk RPG as well as the interesting category created for Dragon Knight 3 (PCE). The most interesting category? Well, that would have to be the "BEST VIDEO GAME RUMOR" (Street Fighter II as a CD-ROM for TG-CD and Sega CD! Imagine the loading times!) You might also enjoy the prescient article entitled "CDs—The Future of Video Gaming" amongst other TG-16 goodies.

If you want to get high-resolution .jpg files of individual pages, use the .pdf as a reference to change the PAGE NUMBER in the link below:

Do you guys think that Dragon Slayer is superior to Ys: Book I & II, as the editors of EG felt back in 1993? Dragon Slayer was up against Night Trap (Sega CD) and Loom (PC). I dug Loom (it was OK), and I played Night Trap (after the initial novelty wore off, it was pretty tedious), so DS should have won hands down. Of course, I doubt that the readers voted accordingly. What do you think?

OLD STUFF:
Hey, I'm only three years late. There are still a lot of things that I need to fix / add / finalize, but I had to make a post before going to sleep.

I'll keep it brief:
1. If you have any suggestions, or spot any errors, please tell me.
2. I wrote a lot of stuff 2-5 years ago... so some things need to be corrected.
3. IE7 is a pain in the ass. I can't get the left & right columns to look pretty.
4. For some folks, the "database" will take a long time to load in your browser. Be patient.
5. Once database is loaded, you can avoid re-loading it again by keeping it in its own window and simply opening new tabs / windows in your browser to view subsequent pages / scans.

Short term:
Yes, I have a ton of new page scans in the pipeline. They should trickle out on a regular basis.
I have lots of cute images to add to the pages to counteract all the text.

Thanks :)

On my 19" 4:3 1280x1024 monitor, they're all quite legible.  The last one is large enough for the text to be readable, but the screen shots are a bit on the small side; the first two are better, though the text is probably too big and some panning is required.  I'd go with the wide one, since wide screen monitors are becoming more and more common, and it's preferable to see pages side by side when the graphics spanned both pages like that.

Hahahahhahahaha!

I've actually made a commitment to regularly update the magazine stuff. I have stuff that folks sent me over three years ago. In fact, I was over at Turbo2K not long ago, randomly looking at the old forums, and one of these folks was bummed that his scans were never put up on the web. I CAN'T LET HIM DOWN! Better late than never :).

Plus, I have some stuff that I've done over the years, just waiting to be seasoned, garnished and uploaded.

Damn, we have lazy bastards here. Necromancer, you're the only one to give me the tech specs I was looking for :)

I agree: when a layout spanned two (or more) pages, the page scans should re-capture that same layout. I don't care if the image is super-wide,  the benefits outweigh the deficits.

Aside: I thought you folks would have started talking about the TV SPORTS 4-in-1 pack-in for the TurboDuo by now...

Call me a masochist, but I would have wanted to see this released, later, as a "Sports Package" including extra pads and a turbotap. No one would have bought it, of course, but it would have been a novelty :).

I would still like to play the Baseball game... given time to polish it, it might have been an OK game.

guyjin

the baseball game would probably just have been a renaming of world class baseball.
(were there any other baseball games for the pce/turbo?)

nat

There are shitload for the PCE.

I have one, called "Pro World Stadium." It's by Namco and it's actually the exact same same game as RBI Baseball for the NES (also by Namco). The only difference is they added a texture to the field so it's not just a solid green like in the NES version.

Actually, there might be other differences, but that's the only one that stands out. Keeping in mind that the PCE/Turbo can just about run NES code natively on it's CPU, there's a good chance Pro World Stadium isn't even a reprogramming of RBI Baseball. Most of the graphics are NES-par fare. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if they just compiler-optimized the NES code for the Turbo's CPU and threw it on a HuCard.

It may have helped sales a bit, as they could've swapped out Ys I & II for this thing and picked up a few anti-RPG gamers.  Shitty trade off, but sports games sold well for the Genny.

I wouldn't think so, since the game in the review looks quite different from World Class Baseball.  It would've made more sense for them to finish up TV Sports Baseball than it would've for them to recycle one of Hudson's games.

Necro, thanks for pointing out to guyjin that there was, indeed, a TV SPORTS Baseball, but it was never released. There was a person here... he was on jluedke's podcast "The Drunken Gamers"... who was a reviewer back in the day. IIRC, he played the TV Sports Baseball game (either as an eprom or at a trade show) and said the version he saw still had some rough parts. The published review describes rough patches as well.

Like I said, I think TV SPORTS Baseball could have been decent.

16-bit

Is there a particular scanner that you would suggest for magazine scanning?

esteban

Quote from: 16-bit on 03/09/2008, 10:37 PMIs there a particular scanner that you would suggest for magazine scanning?
I think that any scanner (I use a pretty low-priced model in the 100-150$ range?) will do fine. I've used Canon and Epson, mostly, although I've also used some total crap models (MicroTek?). The key thing is to make sure the glass plate (platen) is clean (no grease or lint or scratches) and to set the resolution at a decent level. I've read conflicting information about the "ideal" resolution to scan at, but I suggest 300dpi because then I can enlarge parts of a page to get a really good look at something.

Oh, what would you want to look at closely? Well, how about this? *

That is as big as I could get that image from a 300 dpi scan. Now, 300 dpi creates friggin' huge files, but, the way things are going, in a few years, I'll put even better scans on the site and I don't want to have to re-scan everything.

* Paranoia Dragon had been mentioning this game a lot over the past few years, but I had no idea what he was talking about until I saw this a few days ago. So, yes, this one's for you PD. I really wish this game was released, I fantasize that Riftwar Saga was inspired by Archon (look at the second screenshot to see what I mean!)

Thanks nat & NecroPhile :)

1. I wonder what happened to Working Designs and their plan to bring World Heroes 2 and King of the Monsters to TurboDuo?
I don't imagine things got very far, but Paranoid_Dragon (or someone else?) mentioned that an Arcade Card + ACD combo pack was being considered.
Unfortunately, I don't think WH2 or KotM would have been enough of a draw....

2. If you were to show someone the March '93 Electronics Boutique Catalog and asked them to pick SegaCD vs. TurboDuo.... well, it would have been a no-brainer! It's not a fair comparison, of course, but judging solely on the catalog... well, the SegaCD is looking pretty damn weak. The DUO's library may have been small, but at least it had a bunch of games that you would want to play :)

$60 for INXS Make My Video. Awesome. And I could have totally mocked SegaCD's other offerings (Blackhole Assault!), but I didn't want to bash Sega any further...

Its important to understand that Vic Ireland has eyes bigger than his stomach (in other words, pretty damn big eyes). This is the guy who after being dissed by SoA said he was going to release Lunar 3 for PS. What's that you say? 10 years later and still there is no such thing as Lunar 3 in Japanese or English? Yeah, exactly. Could he have meant Grandia? Well, maybe, but SCEA released that so either way he was full of it.

Basically I'm saying don't hold your breath for Gaijinworks's 360 version of Tengai Mayou Zira.

Oh, absolutely, but I went beyond the magazine and tried to anticipate what WD might have actually been able to bring over. Now, while even WD's own website listed WH1, we know that only WH2 was released...

Also, WD's own website listed King of the Monsters 2 as the title they were hoping to bring over... so there is a lot of conflicting information :).

What I find interesting is that these titles were being considered. I, for one, would never have chosen KoftM 1 or 2 for a venture of this sort... but that's only because I'm too conservative a businessman.

Zeta, I actually love your bitter tone, but surely you can appreciate a character such as Victor Ireland (especially because he played a pivotal role in the history of TG-16 and TG-CD)...

I don't doubt that the following titles were being considered. I don't know how viable the projects were, but they were at least considered:

Elfaria2  (WD did translation only, Hudson Soft would have published it)
 Hudson Soft
 RPG
 Super Nintendo
 Unreleased

King of the Monsters 2  (I suspect that WD was simply going to ride on the coattails of Hudson Soft for this and World Heroes.)

I envy his lame ass to be honest. He lived the otaku dream for a long time.

You got it. :) I updated the page so you can print out your own on letter- or legal-sized paper.

Tell me if there is anything you'd like me to change or play around with.

I haven't tested the legal-sized one... but it should fit (hopefully).

Crap, I didn't think of that! :)

Is there such a beast?

IMO, the bigger the better! I haven't looked, but there must be some company that sells odd-sized specialty papers... maybe they have "blank" sticker sheets of various odd sizes.

If you find something, I'll re-size the image and add it to the page as another option. :)
