this video got me thinking: what is the usual way to pronounce IREM?
the guy in the video pronounces it the first way; I always pronounced it the second way.
How do you do it?

Sinistron

I ream sounds kinda bad.  I'll stick with I-rem.

I say it the second way, though I suppose you could pronounce it as eye argh ee em since it's an acronym.

I leave off the syllable at the end (no "oo") since I have the ability to end sounds on a consonant.  It is Irem, exactly how it looks.

Anyone who pronounces it differently than Turbo D is a major goofnugget.

Tatsujin

it simply depends in which country i use that "word".

It's simple, if you spell it as "アイレム", then you pronounce it as AI-RE-MU in a high-pitched schoolgirl squeal. If you spell it as "IREM", then you pronounce it as eye-rem, just as it looks.

Tatsujin

nothing more and less than just right (except for that thing with the high-pitched schoolgirl squeal). close thread!!

Exactly.

I'm surprised by the poll though. I always pronounced it Eye-Rem as well, butI didn't think it was going to be such a landslide for that option.

I always have pronounced it as "I REHM" (long I, short E form). Ever since I've first seen the word, I've felt it would be pronounced this way since the "REM" part of it made me think of, at different times, Rapid Eye Movement (which the abbreviation is spelled identically), a ram (as in a mountain sheep), and ROM (Read Only Memory). It turns out to be the most popular way of saying it, interestingly enough :P.

I have a tendency to do things like this. I never used shorthand for TurboGrafx-16. I always (even today) refer to the full name. In comparison, saying S. N. E. S. or N. E. S. or "Super Famicom" are easy :).

I also pronounce Ninja Gaiden this way 8-[ :-". Although I know now that "I" in Japanese is virtually always sounds like the English long "E", I still say it like so especially since I wasn't aware of that when I first saw the game title at the time.

Same here, even though I know it is Ninja GUY DEN.  I just like to stress the gayness factor of the game.  I'm one of the few who didn't go gaga over the Xbox version(s).  I look forward to trying the demo for part 2, maybe it will be worth my time.

Gayden, Guyden - meh. Depends on the time of the day. Kid Icarus on the other hand...

Dark Fact

I used to pronounce Ninja Gaiden as Ninja Gayden as a kid all the time too. :) Don't worry.  I've finally smartened up. Although, there are still guys in my anime club that still insist on calling it Gayden.

IREM huh? I also pronounce it as eye-rem. :) Good to see that is the most voted spelling on here.  I feared I may had been wrong all these years.  But still...IREM kind of sounds like a diagnosis your optometrist would give you. :P

I also say Gay Den, since I'm in the U.S. and refuse to bend the pronunciation rules of a superior language just to make someone else happy.  If I were in Japan, I'd do it their way; but I'm not, so fuck it.  :D

It'll always be Ninja Gay-den to me, although I do accidentally mispronounce it as Guy-den sometimes. I'll also never call Ryu "Ryoo". Thats just ridiculous. [-(

I like saying Rie-Ooo.  Don't spell it with a "Y" if you don't want it pronounced like that.  The correct pronunciation is "roo" like the Australian marsupial.

Who here pronounces "Ryo" as DEE YO?

Keranu

I always pronounce Ryu as Rie-yuu. Sure it's not technical correct, but it's just so much more natural!

Which way is that you're addressing to the way you'll never say Ryu? Is it with the "Y" having an "E" or "I" sound?

I don't like "Ree-ooo", the way the anouncer and supposedly all of japan pronounces it.

I also don't do "Blunka" or "Zong-gee-eff" or "Bar-log". [-(
