I've always preferred the SMS Sonic to the Genesis version. It plays slower, so there is less inclination to go really fast and accidentally hit an enemy. I find the level design to be a little better with a focus more on platforming. As mentioned before, the music is great and I think the SMS exclusive Jungle world is a super fun set of levels that rival some of the best levels in the series.
I'm a notorious strange man.

I LOVE the Super Nintendo.  I can't help but love it; and I honestly DO prefer the SNES audio to the Genesis in most cases, as I never cared for the instrumentations used in many games outside of a rare handful where the developer really knew how to take advantage of the hardware.

I have a laundry list of games on the system that I enjoy.  I'm also one of those "weirdos" that prefers the SNES versions of Aladdin (better gameplay mechanics overall and less repetitive / doesn't overstay its welcome) and The Adventures of Batman and Robin (simple but fun gameplay with some unique ideas, and it captured the feel of the show perfectly, whereas the Genesis version felt nothing like it to me).

I love pretty much every game Konami and Capcom ever released for the thing.  Then there's the fantastic first-party titles like Super Metroid, Super Punch Out!!, Super Mario Kart, Yoshi's Island, A Link to the Past.  I'm also an RPG junkie, so there was a ton of gold for me there.  In fact, even with fantastic RPGs like Ys, Xanadu, and Tengai Makyou; I can confidently say that I think the Super Nintendo outdid every other system on that front.  The Genesis had Phantasy Star and Shining Force, which are great, but absolutely cannot compete with Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest (V in particular),  and Earthbound.  Lunar 2 on the Sega CD is one of my favorite RPGs ever, but the SNES just had hit after hit after hit.  Yeah, if you liked shooters, you probably bought the wrong system; but otherwise it had one of the most diverse and interesting libraries of games I can think of (if you discount everything THQ ever put out for it).  There's so much gold there.

All the talk about the Master System / Sega Mk. I-II-III is interesting to me.  I've come to appreciate it more over the years for how amazing the first Phantasy Star is; but when I picked one up at a flea market with Altered Beast about 15 years ago, I was so disappointed in the thing that I sold it to a friend a week later.  I occasionally regret it, but honestly, I feel like I've already played every worthwhile game on the system (for my tastes, anyway).

It's the old adage: One man's trash; another man's treasure.

I do like me some supernintendo... My favs list other than turbo pc engine obviously is Sega cd.. Sega master system.. And super Nintendo... Eh Nintendo as well.. I loved n64 when I was much younger but now can't really stand it..

BlueBMW

Growing up I had DOS games and an Atari 800 until about 1990 when I got a regular ol NES.  In 1992 or so I got a Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis.  I basically played the sonics, outrun and Aladdin on Genesis.  I used the SNES a lot more.  The trio of Donkey Kong Country games did it for me.  I know some hate the prerendered stuff, but I thought those games made the best use of it and they played plenty fast.  Snow Barrel Blast on DKC1 is easily my favorite SNES level of any game.  Part of that is my unnatural hard on I have for anything SNOW.
All that said, I think I preferred the sound of the SNES over the Genesis too.  Not sure what it is about the instruments etc that were used, but I just liked the SNES stuff better.  Genesis had some good music, dont get me wrong (Sonic 2 Metropolis zone, Sonic 3 Ice Cap Zone, Sonic and Knuckles Lava Reef Zone.... yumm!) but I know I enjoyed a lot of SNES music more.  Fzero had great music, the aforementioned DKC games and the three Final Fantasies (Mystic Quest had good stuff!) were also fantastic.

DKC's prerendered graphics still look great on certain monitors imo. And really awful on others.

Agreed with Beemer on the SNES sound. It may get hate for its use of too much reverb but therein lies its charm for me. Technosoft made the Genesis sing and I love it, but that Sony music chip inside the SNES always wins in my world.

Same boat, I was proud to own it (and NES prior) but then didn't give a shit about Nintendo's direction with N64 afterwards. Jumped shipped off to Sony, following SquareSoft's lead.

Yep.  Pretty much the same thing happened with me.  I rented an N64 from my local video store to play Mario and Zelda, and that was about it.  After my uncle brought over his PlayStation with his new copy of FFVII, I knew exactly which system I wanted to buy.

BlueBMW

In truth back in 97 or whatever it was I traded my n64 in for a ps1 with final fantasy 7.  I didn't regret getting the ps1 but I did regret letting go of the n64.

Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

Methinks he doesn't like me too awful much :/

And for the record, that's like saying "it's stupid to have a Jaguar hate thread because all the best crappy primitive 3D games ever are on Jag."  Some of us just aren't that into RPGs, and even despite this, I've actually played plenty of RPGs on the Genesis and PCE that match or even surpass the SNES's "best".

PukeSter

Don't worry Venom, tool is an absolute tool.

I like all 3 systems. SNES has the platformers, PCE has the shooters, and Genesis has the action games.

PCE definitely has a bunch of RPGs that are as good as the best SNES games. Ys IV is proof alone. But problem is most of them haven't been translated yet.

Legend of Xanadu I and II both look amazing though. :)

PukeSter

One other thing, some people rave about how Super Castlevania IV and Super Aleste are the best of their respective franchises.

I find both of these games ugly (even for 16-bit standards), slow and gimmicky.

And why is it that non-1st party snes games, other than ones by Square or Capcom, tend to have such bland music?

Blazing Lazers>>MUSHA>>>>Super Aleste

MUSHA is fantastic, but a little shorter. The colors and instruments aren't as good either.

Rondo>Bloodlines>>>Super IV>>>>Dracula X

If Bloodlines had more levels, I would actually prefer it over Rondo.

Mathius

Konami did a stellar job creating the music for Super Castlevania IV. It's one of my absolute favorite soundtracks from any game. Don't listen to Lukester. :) It fucking rocks!

This is one of those things I can't understand.  I think the tones they used are of pretty high quality, but the compositions are just...bland.  Especially the one everyone raves about, Belmont's Theme.

Super Aleste, however, has a spectacular soundtrack.  Sort of reminds me of Streets of Rage, though not quite as good.  You just didn't get a whole lot of "uhnnn-tsss" dance music on the SNES, or any 16-bit system for that matter.

Belmont's Theme is not my favorite from that game. There are so many others later on that just rule. THEY RULE! Both in composition and instrumentation.

I'm at the point where I like them all equally except for Bloodlines and Dracula X snes. They're good but not legendary like the other three.

Been playing Dr Mario and Tetris on the SNES with the family this week and lovin it.

Played a few other "classics" as well. I didn't remember the slowdown being as bad as it is... wow...

I'd still put Bloodlines way above Drac X SNES.

seieienbu

I think that for a snes game the Dracula X soundtrack is great.  It's only real flaw is that the PC Engine version's soundtrack is straight better than the snes version's.  But whatcha gonna do, cartridge limitations vs CD.

Hell even without midi it still sounds stellar! I don't which I like better but I can say that both are definitely amazing and worth listening to on their own.

Plenty? I think that's a bit of an exaggeration. I love the Turbo and Genesis but never played an RPG on either that matched or surpassed Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy IV&VI. I'm talking menu-based RPGs, not Ys or Neutopia-type games.

I tried playing SoM a couple of years ago and found it incredibly dull.  You're CONSTANTLY waiting for that 100% meter to get full.  If a 99% attack dealt 99% of the damage of a charged swing I wouldn't have despised it so much.  As it is a 99% attack dealt like, 5 damage in end game and made the whole thing pretty miserable to slog through.

I had some seriously rose tinted glasses from my playthrough as a youth on this game.

Recently, two friends invited me to what they call "Super Mario World challenge" night.

What you do need:
3 SNES consoles
3 TVs
3 SMW cartridges
Lots of beer
liquor

The rules:
All start their consoles at exactly the same time. The person who beats all 96 levels first wins.
For every two castles/fortresses, you've got to empty one bottle of beer in the meantime. For every bowser child castle where you rescue a Yoshi egg, you've got to celebrate with one shot of liquor.
You need to complete all worlds in the correct order, so e.g. you need to beat all Donut Plains levels before you are allowed to advance to Vanilla Dome.

If you've got to pee, the first two times are stopped for anybody. After that, everybody is on his own, so you either have good control of your bladder or you get behind the others. Drinking non-alcoholic things inbetween to lessen the effects of the beer and liquor is allowed, but since it puts weight on the bladder, it's not exactly what you want.

All the three of us were pretty much balanced through the game, until we got to Chocolate Island and had so many drinks.

In the end, I won unexpectedly, since the others said they trained for the event and I didn't. I guess it might have something to do with me being the only one playing on a CRT TV. Although I made sure that the LCD TVs of the others had display lag being minimized and game mode acivated where available. The real trouble was the second to last level in the Special World. Everybody hates Outrageous.

In all honesty, that 96 exit race sounds kinda fun.  I may try that with some people some time.

We started at 8 pm and were done around 11 pm.

And yes, I found it to be very fun. Imagine three friends swearing at enemies and death traps, while other spectating people around you act as referees, refill your shots and provide cold beer.
