I have a question..... I know that all the Hu-card(U.S.) games all came in outer cardboard boxes. But Does anyone know a list of what CD games came in those boxes? As far as I know, some did and some didn't. I would just like to know a list of what games did/didn't come with outer boxes.

Keranu

The pre-Duo/TTi era of Turbo games had the cardboard cases for the CD games.

So anything before '93 (is that when Duo it came out?) has boxes?
Here are some specific ones i'm curious about:

Roit Zone - box?
Forgotten Worlds - box?
Prince of Persia - box?
Ys 3 - box?
Gate of Thunder - box?

Lords of Thunder - no box
Beyond Shadowgate - no box

thanks for the info!

CrackTiger

Roit Zone - no box
Forgotten Worlds - no box
Prince of Persia - no box
Y's 3 - has box
Gate of Thunder - never sold

Lords of Thunder - no box
Beyond Shadowgate - no box

Pretty much all CD2 games have boxes up until the launch of the Super CD format (pre-Duo). Once Super CDs came along, they switched to PC Engine style CD cases.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

Pretty much, except the Duo came out in '92, though there might be some games with boxes in '92 but I'm not sure.

Easy rule of thumb: If the game was released by TTi, assume no box for CD games. You'll see the TTi logo plastered on the packaging / instruction manual, so this should be easy.

As far as Working Designs is concerned, hmmmmm, I don't think Exile, Exile 2, Vasteel came in a box (but folks here have mentioned a cardboard sleeve for Vasteel, IIRC).

This is by no means complete, but it should help you sort things out.

Thanks guys!

Just the info I was looking for.

Exile has a box, Vasteel doesn't, its a double case and I bought it new.

Exile 2 has a cardboard sleeve type thingy.  I took a picture of both sides JUST FOR YOU!  Feel special and send me $100.  Thanks.

I wonder how much this little sleeve type tingy increases the value of the game?

That looks familiar, I'm guessing that Vasteel had one too (my memory has now been altered to think its a certainty).

Vasteel is the latest released WD Turbo game I got to buy new.

All I know for sure is that it had no box and I was trying to decide between it and Exile (which had a box), while on a trip to Seattle(the same trip I received SFIICE a day before).

The reason I was deciding between those two games, of course... is that WD never released their Turbo games in Canada (I had previously mail ordered CF2 and would later order Exile direct from WD).

They responded to a letter I wrote them explaining how they wouldn't be selling Turbo games in Canada anytime soon, but they were working on it. Of course, they didn't get distribution within Canada until Lunar (from what I ever saw).

When my mother went on a seperate trip to Seattle, I gave her very detailed specific instructions, and somehow she actually managed to find and bring me back Side Arms. Which, of course, also wasn't released in Canada.

Side Arms was the only game ever released by Radiance Software for any system, correct?  They seemed to just go away after that, and I never saw anything from them before that.  Who programmed the game?   Radiance just brought it over as far as I know.

NEC Ave did both the HuCard and CD versions.

Radiance certainly had good taste in games. Although they still mangled the cover art, at least its up there with the best of them for not representing the actual game whatsoever.

Its like putting a picture of a GI JOE character on a Transformers game.

I sold mine for $5 to some guy. I found it in a box years after I sold the game.

It's not that bad! It's like putting the localized, American-ized version of Bonk in the cover art, instead of PC Genjin.... hmmmm....

Oh wait, it is like putting a GI JOE character on the cover! :)

Exactly, a giant transforming mecha robot is represented by a human space cowboy.

Yeehaw!  :P

And going by memory alone, he looks like Scrap Iron from GI JOE.

EDIT: For all you young whippersnappers who've never seen or heard of the real GI JOE (everything before ARAH doesn't count, what do you think the 'R' stands for anyway?) or Transformers and for anyone who would dare to question my old foggy memory, let this drive the message home:

It went from this-

To this-

Of course the real reason its hilarious, isn't so much the change in covers, but the fact that the new cover doesn't represent the game whatsoever, where as the original perfectly summed it up.

Jetfire(?) is such a rip of the Macross valkyrie!

rolins

Quote from: BonknutsJetfire(?) is such a rip of the Macross valkyrie!
I remember this character from the cartoon. Isn't he called "Skyfire" though?

TurboXray

Maybe it was Skyfire, but transformers was a "pot luck" of different toys molded into a show for the US. A lot of the actual transformers  toys and characters originated from something else.

Anyway, back on topic - I don't remember any of the Super CD games coming with boxes. Ys III was old CD and had a box.

CrackTiger

Quote from: BonknutsJetfire(?) is such a rip of the Macross valkyrie!

It is the Macross Valkyrie.

The 1 player Sidearms guy is the rip off, complete with the skull & cross bones.

They had to change Jetfire to Skyfire on the show, because Hasbro only had the toy rights for that particular model. I imagine that Harmony Gold would've still owned the N.A. animated Macross rights at that point.

No Super CDs came with boxes. I remember the switch over, because the local Radio Shack got the first batch of Super CDs, all in jewel cases, months before the Turbo Duo and all I could do was look at them and imagine what Super CD games would be like.

The similarities betweeen the two dudes is just too great. I love it.

This rules on 100 different levels. First, I totally remember that Cobra dude and probably still have him and his card. Second, I always loved the art for the GI Joe toy line. The artist(s) were friggin' masters at capturing and portraying everything that GI Joe should be. So why did I cut out the cards and throw away the boxes? I don't know.

For the record, I actually like the NA Sidearms cover, because it has an old-skool American sci-fi aesthetic. Plus, the artist was very careful to make sure that our hero was wearing a fabulous anti-gravity ring (a striking emerald-green anti-g gem set in a masculine gold band).

What's that? You can't see his ring? Have a look here:

I also really liked the cover when I first got it. It was actually one of the better ones for any system at the time, let alone the TG-16(still limited pencil crayon drawings).

That ring, like the rest of his getup sure is fabulous alright, if you know what I mean.

Something that's really cool about that ad, is how it says:

"Featuring authentic "Coin-Op" quality, SIDEARMS brings you furious action, dazzling graphics and stereo sound, previously only available at the local arcade."

Whats cool about this description, is back then, most ads were full of shit when making such claims, but Sidearms really does feature coin-op quality graphics.

Actually, the certainly dazzling graphics are slightly better than the arcade and we're talking that nicely shaded classic Capcom here. Even though, until emulation, I let myself belive that that the graphics weren't as good, and always wanted one section to look as nice as the one screenshot in magazine ads. Probably a result of reading EGM since issue one.

And the "stereo sound" really stood out to me, I remember listening to the game with ear phones and being impressed with the first stage music as it bounced around between left and right speakers. I was very impressed with the game in general, even though I'd had Sidearms Special for a year or two already.

One last amusing part about that tag line, is: "stereo sound, previously only available at the local arcade." This is funny, because I now that Sidearms, like most arcades found at "the local arcade" back in the day, was really only in mono, so once again, it's got a leg up on the "authentic "Coin-Op" quality" of the original, which was one of my favorite arcades at the time and still is today.

You should see the latest 2 Jetfire figures!  Wow, they're friggin awesome!  One, is Jet/Skyfire before he came to earth(his cybertronian mode) & the other, is a re-envisioning of the original Jetfire toy, to look more like Skyfire!  Here's pictures of Classics Jetfire http://tformers.com/ig.php?mode=album&album=6718&dispsize=800&start=0

I have the cybertronian one, the Classics one isn't out yet.

Anyways, Radiance also did Talespin & Darkwing Duck IIRC.

So Radiance is to blame for the Turbo Disney games? I wish they would've brought over another couple quality PCE games instead.  :(

The Skyfire'y Jetfire looks really good, especially since they didn't try to give him the wussy face from the cartoon.  :)

Yeah, I checked the manual on Talespin, & it was done by Radiance.

As for Jetfire, the one you're talking about, actually has both faces.  The face that looks like Jetfire, is a battle mask, & then you can lift it up, & it's Skyfire's face, so, everybody is happy that way :D
