do any of you remember the U.S. television commercial for Legendary Axe?
I remember seeing it in late 1989 / early 1990.

it was NOT the same commercial that introduced the TG16 which did show some footage of Legendary Axe, but was not mainly about that game (that commercial is already on the internet  and linked to  below)

what I remember of the U.S. Legendary Axe commercial:

*two guys in their livingroom/den playing Legendary Axe
*part of the gameplay showed the scene where you have to avoid the boulders.
*i think the guy who is playing, jumps onto the rope
*you see them fighting the final boss, Jagu
*one of the guys says "go back! go back! go back!"
*the commercial features a dog, maybe a Dalmation?
*if I recall correctly, one of the guys has a sandwich which he drops on the floor.
*the dog gets the sandwich.
*the dog definitally rolls over towards the end of the ad.

the two guys in the Legendary Axe commercial may, or may not have been the same two guys in THIS U.S. TG16 commercial that introduced the console and gaming including Keith Courage and the CD-ROM

if anyone has the U.S.  Legendary Axe commercial with the dog, I would very much like to see it. would be much appreciated.

i've already checked for it on:

* gameads.gamepressure.com
* gaming-age
* youtube
* turbotv_ad_archive.html on this website
and elsewhere, without any luck.

edit: GOD FREAKING BLESS YOUTUBE, long lost commercial, FOUND.   :shock: :mrgreen: :shock: :mrgreen:

Sorry, have never seen this commercial or any Turbo commercials on real TV, just ones downloadable on the net, so thanks a lot for that other commercial you posted; I haven't seen that one yet :) . I would love to see this commercial as well since I love these old Turbo commercials. To provide further info, when you "-two guys in their livingroom/den playing Legendary Axe" , I immediately thought of the TurboGrafx-16 promo featured in the Turbo Goods section of PC Engine FX TV episode 5. You can download that episode from here , so if you do watch it, let us know if those are the same two people in the commercial that you were talking about :) . I'm not sure if that helps, but I think it would be neat info regardless if they were or weren't the same people.

I have never seen the ad you're referring to. Then again, I haven't seen a lot of the TG-16 ads, it seems.

Sorry.

I remember that commercial like it was on yesterday.  well, okay my memory is a bit foggy, but i swear, this commercial aired in the U.S. in fall/winter 1989.  it could've been on Nickelodeon, MTV, USA or all three networks.

I was *very* surprised that it was not on http://gameads.gamepressure.com/

somebody out there must at least remember this commercial.  even if i never see it again   :|

There are definitely some "lost" commericals because I remember a short TG-16 commercial (prior / during U.S. launch) that has not been documented at any of the sites. Hopefully, one of these days, someone will find it on an old VHS tape or something :)

yes hopefully.

this guy,  Greg Gillis, on his website called 'Fors Yard', a history of the Sega Genesis launch, has an old 1989 commercial of Genesis games, featuring Golden Axe
so there is hope that the lost, old,  U.S. TG-16 commercials will surface, some day.

Whoa! someone uploaded it to YouTube this summer, and I just found it today.  :mrgreen:   :mrgreen:
Haven't seen this since late '89 or early '90.

Man oh man,  like with anything we remember from long ago and get to see again,
it's really interesting to compare my memory of the commercial with how it actually was.

The reality of it differs somewhat from what's left in my mind, but the essence of my memory
was true to what was really there.

I recall seeing that ad before, though not back in the day (somebody might've posted a link before).  With such slick marketing as this gem, I fail to comprehend why the Turbo sold so poorly.  :-s

awack

I don't remember that commercial, the one and only video game commercial i remember from that time is the one for Splatterhouse, they have a guy dressed up as Rick who is cutting out a 2x4 on a table saw and at the end of the commercial he turns towards the camera and swings the 2x4, at least that's how i remember it.

Ceti Alpha

This might be the best commercial for the Turbografx I've seen yet. That still doesn't say much though...

Yeah TurboGrafx commercials weren't too hot but this one was definitely the best, it'll forever be etched & burned into my brain.

guyjin

I think I know why nobody bought the Turbo.

They hardly show any gameplay in the commercials! That commercial is like 50% dog eating, 40% boys looking at game, and a second or two of jerky screenshots. you can't even really hear the music over the boys chatter and the dog licking and burping.

I couldn't make worse commercials if I tried.

Like Keranu, I don't really recall seeing ANY commercials for the TG-16 or its games on TV.  I don't think NEC actually wanted the system to sell.  It was all a conspiracy with JFK, the aliens in Roswell, Osama Bin laden, George W. Bush, Neil Armstrong and Barack Obama to make the Genesis sell more.

handygrafx

I saw a few TG16 commercials airing with modest frequency on Nickelodeon, USA Network and MTV in 1989-90.  This is the one I remember most.

There was a greater variety of Genesis commercials which aired much more frequently and on more stations.  Sega crushed NEC in marketing.

NEC's 'Higher Energy Video Game System'
vs
SEGA's 'We Bring The Arcade Experience Home'    +  'Genesis Does'

...Wow. I haven't seen that one since 1990.

ParanoiaDragon

I remember seeing a few commercials lots in the first couple of years, the main ones that come to mind, are for Bonk's Adventure, Splatterhouse, Bloody Wolf, Keith Courage/TG16 & CD Rom, Bonk's Revenge(of which I remember most fondly), Turbo Duo, & I could swear there was a commercial for TV Sports Football.
