Quote from: tpivette on 10/08/2012, 06:45 PMSeems as though a 4:3 screen is availible. Still a better deal than either an AES or MVS for people who've yearned but never had the chance to play SNK games. Add a 2nd controler and hell yeah... the wife and I can get in on some SS2 throwdown!

Looks as though you can expand on the 20 (or 21) games that come with the system, also. Looking good on my part (as I don't own ether home consoles). Again... win-win!
You say "looks like" as if you've read new info. Do you have a link?

On the Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/NEOGEO-GOLD-Limited-Edition-Electronic-Games/dp/B0093G9VOI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1349743395&sr=8-1&keywords=neo+geo+x+gold

It says the the limited edition pre-order comes with a "Ninja Master's Neogeo X Game Card." I don't know diddly about the Neo Geo, but that sounds like an additional game on a card to me.  Which would be sweet.  I'm very tempted to pick one of these up, along with an extra controller.

UPDATE:  Just noticed this image on the amazon link.  Sorry it's so big:

NeoGeoX-Gold.webp

Looks like the game is on a standard SD card!

I have two questions about this system:

1 - Can this play TEH ROMZ illegally downloaded from the internet?

2 - Is the video out limited to composite or does it have s-video? (EDIT: I see it has HDMI out. It is protected or can I record it?)

OK I lied, I have more questions:

3 - Is this emulation or a NGOAC?  How accurate is this to the real systems?

SignOfZeta

It's emulation. Accuracy is unknown but has no reason to not be perfect. I'm sure you can't plays teh romz on it as shipped, but it's almost certainly to be hacked the same day it comes out so illegitimate expansion will be there long after the thing dies.

Still looking for confirmation of 4:3 mode, although if Blaze/SNK were too fucking stupid to put that in I'm pretty sure the hackers eventually will.

I have some high hopes for this thing. I hope the quality is good and not some 3rd party crap.

TheClash603

The pre-order extra game thing is making me mad.  I don't want to spend $200 on crap, but there is no way to know if it is crap until there are some reviews out.  However, if I wait until reviews are out, then I miss out on the free game.  THE HUMANITY!!!!!

SignOfZeta

Ninja Masters isn't that great, and like I said, it will be hacked pretty much instantly.

That being the case...I'm still not sure if I should pre-order this. I really really hate half-assed emulation.

My bad, I misread the article... seems as though the handheld has a 4.3" screen.
Original owner of a TG-16 since 1989!

CURRENTLY PLAYING:
Vita - Conception 2
PS3 - Tales of Graces f
Wii U - Monster Hunter 3 Ulltimate

I'd like to know which BIOS will be emulated. AES gives you a very limited number of continues on a lot of games. MVS with free play enabled is better.

SignOfZeta

That's a minor issue, but yeah, some games in AES mode are nigh unbeatable.

1 - Don't know yet! The Genesis clones that the company makes will let you use roms, although that's not officially stated. The Ninja Master's card is on a "secured" SD card. If it doesn't allow the use of roms, I'm sure this security will be broken in short order so it won't matter.

2 - It has composite video, or HDMI at 480p. I'm hoping that I will be able to hook it to a HDMI to component converter that they sell at Monoprice to use it in 480i on a SDTV, but nobody's going to know if that works until someone (probably me) tries it. I seriously doubt it's protected, but you never know.

3 - Emulation. Unlike Genny clones though, I don't really mind this, as the Neo is ridiculously easy to emulate accurately as long as the system has enough ram to handle the bigass carts.

I love Ninja Masters!  That pic also looks pretty slick!

I also see this probably not selling all that well.  I hope it does though.  If it doesn't sell well these will probably go for quite a bit down the road.

roflmao

I so want one of these.  I'm so excited that when Christmas time rolls around, I can actually give an amazon.com link to my parents or wife for something awesomely retro!

And if it doesn't show up under the tree, I'll just buy one.  :D  The pre-order pack-in doesn't hold any nostalgic value for me.  The included fighters (and others) are the ones I remember playing in arcades back in the day.

420GOAT

I want to be more like 337.

I want to see this.  This does look so cool.

Exactly!  But yeah, it's probably unrealistic :(

This thing is looking basically perfect. It has a real click stick and its not locked to 16:9 like I feared.

The Wii and PS2 collections are not emulated properly. The video seems ever-so-slightly downscaled and results in some pretty funky artifacts when scrolling. 100% unacceptable to someone like me.

SignOfZeta

What is your display? I didn't notice any issues with the Wii VC releases.

I haven't tried the Virtual Console ones. I'm talking the disc-based ones. The display is irrelevant, the emulation is messed up and show you if I were to capture them which I don't want to do because moving the Wii is a pain in the ass with all of its danglies that need to come with it.

Bardoly

This thing looks great!

(Now I just have to try to find $200...)   :(

RGB_Gamer

If it somehow had RGB output, I'd be interested...

I would rather have RGB output than HDMI. RGB is best for an RGB capable monitor if you like the classic arcade feel...It is Neo Geo after all...

Some of us don't have HDMI inputs on our gaming displays.  I play all of my games on an RGB monitor.

I understand that, but surely you guys must understand that you are a microscopically puny minority.

My analog RGB Neo setup consists of an actual Neo. If I'm that hung up about signal clarity I'm certainly not going to be running an emulator.

Actually, its not. Its a emulator run on a handheld. It would be crazy to expect them to include a straight analog RGB function when their target audience is specifically using a HDMI capable LCD. It may be hard to swallow, but their target audience here is not going to be all the nostalgic old school die hard Neo owners of old. Most of the people buying this are going to be in their late teens to early 20's. New fans who are trying to get a taste of what things were like for the original Neo fan base prior. Mainly the same folks who bought the PS2 and Wii compilations, etc, but now want to feel leet and have some bragging rights of their own.

geise

How much are the games going to be on SD cards?  I know the neogeox comes with an sd of 20 or so games, and 1 sd of ninja masters for the people pre-ordering.   I never checked on how much games are going to cost though.

Nobody knows. If I were them I'd get that lined up before the launch. This thing is likely to be cracked instantly. If people are pirating ROMs day one they probably won't give a shit what gets released officially later given that there likely to be totally original versions.
IMG

TheClash603

I would prefer for cards to have a few games on them and charge $30-$50, than for one game each at $20.  I am hoping the one game pack-in is just a special one-time thing for preorders.

The other approach would be to do an E-Reader like packaging where each game comes cheaply and they are in some sort of rack pack.  Gamestop might be happy with that because it won't take up much space.  If the games are sold in this manner, I think $10 each is a strong possibility and in line with single game Virtual Console prices.

geise

Other approach would be for them to release some of the later releases right after launch or before.  I love me some oldschool neo, but those bundled titles are the same games they always release that you can get on basically any system from the ps2/dc era or after.  It's never the later titles that I'm sure most gamers  new to the neo, will want to play.

RE: Lack of RGB

It's not true RGB, but there are converters that can take 480p HDMI sources and convert them to 480i component sources. We won't know how well it will work until we try it, but I'll probably pick one up from Monoprice to see how well it works.

 That description nearly fits me to a T. :D  Except I'm waaaay older.  I remember when the Neo Geo  was new.  I had friends who had Neo Geos and loved playing Neo Geo games in the arcades. Even though I could somehow justify spending the absurd amount of money I did on Turbografx stuff bitd, I couldn't bring myself to invest in another "obviously geared for the cult collector" system. This interests me because it has that familiar look, but already contains a decent library.

Interestingly enough, I have an actual wood-grain 2600 and a bunch of cartridges that sit on a shelf in in my office, but, due to convenience and image quality, I have one of those Flashback systems hooked up to the tv for the rare urge to play one of those games.  I'd have no problem playing this emulated console when it's so close to the original and is so convenient (and relatively cheap).
