12/23/2024: Localization News - Team Innocent

PC-FX Localization for Team Innocent is released, a pre-Christmas gift!! In a twist, it feels like the NEC PC-FX got more attention in 2024 than any other time I can remember! Caveat: The localizers consider the "v0.9" patch a BETA as it still faces technical hurdles to eventually subtitle the FMV scenes, but they consider it very much playable.

I hope you don't mind me posting this, but maybe somebody will enjoy it.

I've been talking about how great the TG16 system was, and my girlfriend had never seen one.  She said she would humour me to play a bunch of its games, and we would rank them accordingly.  Since there are 94 total TG16 games, I simply haven't played them all.  I figured it'd be fun for both of us.

Rating system: GREAT (4, 3.5), GOOD (3, 2.5), MEH (2, 1.5), BAD (1, 0.5).

Here are our results so far, in the order they were drawn.  (At random.)

#1.  TURRICAN
Her: 1
Me: 1

We both thought this was a bad game, but some of the items are cool, and I actually like the graphics.  We wouldn't play this often, but I could see myself popping it in to kill a few minutes.

#2.  DEVIL's CRUSH
Her: 4
Me: 4

By far her favourite game she's played on the TG16, and it's quickly climbing my list as well.  Was thrilled to draw this so early on.

#3.  NIGHT CREATURES
Her: 2
Me: 0.5

Spoiler: We have officially rated eleven games, and this was the only one I hated entirely.  She liked the graphical style, I did not.  She saw some potential, and I would probably never touch this again.  So hard to hit enemies, and just not a fan overall.

#4.  SINISTRON
Her: 3
Me: 2.5

I didn't expect to like this, but it's not too bad.  I've never been a fan of shooters, but this was cool.

#5.  DEAD MOON
Her: 3.5
Me: 3

This was her second "great" game, and she was surprised at how many cool powerups there were.  I was pleasantly surprised too.  If we enjoyed these two, there are tons of games for us still.  After playing through a bunch, she wanted to play this again, even though she isn't fantastic at it.

#6.  IMPOSSIMOLE
Her: 2
Me: 1

She was amused by the game, and I just liked some of the graphics.  It's so hard to really do anything, and it's at that "annoying" level, instead of a challenging level.  It's a bad game, but I might try it out of boredom.  She thinks it's a "high meh".

#7.  JJ AND JEFF
Her: 0.5
Me: 2

She did not like kicking the dog.  She was a bit offended at times, and really couldn't get into this game.  A shame really, as it seems decent enough.  I couldn't say this is a good game, but there are some amusing points that could bring me back.

#8.  WORLD COURT TENNIS
Her: 1.5
Me: 1.5

The quest portion of this game is kind of cute.  I think it'd get really monotonous over the long haul, but in short doses, I kind of like it.

#9.  BLOODY WOLF
Her: 3
Me: 3.5

She thought it was a good game, while I loved it.  There are a few issues with it which would hinder some fun I'd have, but I cannot deny that it's a fun game.  Now that I have a controller to use, the replay-ability is massive.

#10.  CHASE HQ
Her: 2
Me: 1

She likes the driving, I just can't find myself enjoying it.  The voice-overs at the beginning are amazing, really, and the graphics are okay.  Just not a good game, IMO.

#11.  TALE SPIN
Her: 2.5
Me: 3.5

She thinks this is a good game, but much too difficult to use the controls.  I can see where people are coming from, but I've never really had a problem with the controls, and I absolutely love this game.  I can beat it fairly quickly, and it's a pretty short game, but those are minor quips.  I know I'm in the minority, but I really think this is a great game.

#12.  R-TYPE
Her: 3
Me: 3.5

After how much she liked Dead Moon, I was hoping she'd really like this.  Great controls, and she enjoyed it, but Dead Moon was just more enjoyable.  Nevertheless, she liked it!  As for me, I found it a bit more difficult and a little more enjoyable than Dead Moon.

#13.  BLAZING LAZERS
Her: 4
Me: 4

I received a phone call from my mother today saying she found my TG16 and ALL MY GAMES.  She read them out loud, and I was shocked when she said this.  I forgot I had it!  Well, apparently I suck at remembering amazing games.  Blazing Lazers has amazing powerups and it's just so good.  The lady said this was the best Turbo game she has played so far, and for me, it's #2 behind Devil's Crush.  Fantastic.  She cannot wait to play this on the actual system.  Huge win for the Turbo community.  Another addicted player.  ;)

#14.  SONIC SPIKE
Her: 2
Me: 3

We decided to play three random games, and I was pumped for the first two, and less excited for this one.  However, I have to admit... I was pleasantly surprised!  I didn't think a beach volleyball game could be fun, but it really was!  She struggled a bunch with the controls, but she gave it a "hi meh", as it's somewhat fun for her.  For me?  I'll definitely play this again.

#15.  BOXY BOY
Her: 3.5
Me: 3.5

#16.  SIDEARM
Her: 3
Me: 3.5

#17.  DEEP BLUE
Her: 0.5
Me: 0.5

#18.  POWER GOLF
Her: 1.5
Me: 2

#19.  ORDYNE
Her: 2.5
Me: 2.5

#20.  WORLD CLASS BASEBALL
Her: 2
Me: 3.5

#21.  TV SPORTS HOCKEY
Her: 1.5
Me: 1

#22.  PARASOL STARS
Her: 2.5
Me: 1.5

#23.  PAC-LAND
Her: 1.5
Me: 2

#24.  YO'BRO!
Her: 1.5
Me: 3.5

#25.  ALIEN CRUSH
Her: 4
Me: 3

#26.  BONK'S ADVENTURE
Her: 3
Me: 4

#27.  DROP OFF
Her: 1.5
Me: 2.5

#28.  FANTASY ZONE
Her: 1
Me: 1.5

#29.  TV SPORTS BASKETBALL
Her: 0.5
Me: 1

#30.  MAGICAL CHASE
Her: 3.5
Me: 2.5

#31.  LEGENDARY AXE II
Her: 4
Me: 4

#32.  AERO BLASTERS
Her: 3
Me: 2.5

#33.  JACK NICKLAUS TURBO GOLF
Her: 2
Me: 2.5

#34.  CADASH
Her: 1.5
Me: 2

#35.  DARKWING DUCK
Her: 0.5
Me: 0.5

#36.  SPLATTERHOUSE
Her: 2
Me: 3.5

For those keeping score:

Number of great games:
Her: 7 (Blazing Lazers [4], Devil's Crush [4], Alien Crush [4], Legendary Axe II [4], Dead Moon [3.5], Boxy Boy [3.5], Magical Chase [3.5] )
Me: 12 (Devil's Crush [4], Blazing Lazers [4], Bonk's Adventure [4], Legendary Axe II [4], Tale Spin [3.5], Bloody Wolf [3.5], R-Type [3.5], Boxy Boy [3.5], Sidearm [3.5], World Class Baseball [3.5], Yo'Bro! [3.5], Splatterhouse [3.5])

Number of stinkers:
Her: 6 (Turrican [1], Fantasy Zone [1], JJ and Jeff [0.5], Deep Blue [0.5], TV Sports Basketball [0.5], Darkwing Duck [0.5])
Me: 8 (Turrican [1], Impossimole [1], Chase HQ [1], TV Sports Hockey [1], TV Sports Basketball [1], Night Creatures [0.5], Deep Blue [0.5], Darkwing Duck [0.5])

Average scores:
Her: 2.24 (Low Good/High Meh)
Me: 2.42 (Low Good)

That's awesome that your girl is willing to play all those games! So far I've only gotten my wife to try some of the 2 player ones (Double Dungeons and Cadash). It'd be neat if I could get her to play all 94 Chip games... now I just need to get the other 52  :-"

PS3 - Tales of Graces f
Wii U - Monster Hunter 3 Ulltimate

I tried this with my girlfriend once, and it went something like this:

1.)  Felix the Cat - NES
Her:  4.0
Me: 3.0

Her favorite game of all time and the only thing she wants to play that doesn't end with the word "Dash."  I think it is an above average game from the period and still fun to play.

2.)  Every other game:
Her:  Doesn't give a shit.
Me:  Gets shit for playing.

Great idea!  I hope that the two of you can make it all the way through.

I assume that y'all are either emulating on a computer, or you have a Turbo Everdrive?

Lucky you! Having a female gamer companion is a treat indeed.

I can't even get my g/f to play Super Rub a Dub. Yes, you read right; SUPER RUB A'phucking DUB.   You'd think a harmless, cutesy, insanely addictive little game involving rubber ducks, bath tubs, bubbles, and motion sensing controls would at least be disarming enough to appeal to the tiniest shred of gamer in any person old enough to walk upright into theaters to view a Disney/Pixar film. But no, my g/f has found that the sight of a wind-up toy shark attacking rubber ducks to be a bit too troubling for her tastes.
My past-life would've surely led to our demise, and I had left it not a moment too soon. Our escape, though dangerous, had gone well. The train ride, sunlight, and passing snow-covered pine trees came together in a flickering show of our bright, new future together. Her head rested on my shoulder as she soundly slept to the gentle rocking of the passenger car. We felt freedom. We felt peace.

Carparama

Emulating for now.  Actual console on the way, and we'll be buying/finishing the games she loves.  :)

I definitely agree with your assesment of the games you've played so far.  Devil's Crush and Bloody Wolf are the stand-out games imo.

It's great that you've found someone open to exploring these older games.

One of the only Turbo games I could get my gf to play with me was double dungeons since you don't need any fast reflexes for that. However, after getting through a few dungeons she started to fall asleep.

I think most shooter fans would agree.  As someone who only likes them somewhat, I admit it's a great game.  Just not perfect.  :)

Maybe that'll change in time!  Is it your favourite?

You let us all know going in your current stance on the genre. We can lead a horse to a shooter, but you can't make 'em a shmup fan.

Keep up the thread! Nice to have alternate view points on games.

Aggie Tsubi

Very cool, I'm looking forward to seeing more of the reviews. :)

I should try to come up with more ways to connect with my fiance with games. We're both gamers, but it's kind of easy to fall into a rut of just playing single-player games on our own separately given our tastes (most platformers, RPGs, and other stuff that is pretty solitary). And when we do play the same game at the same time, it can backfire, like if it's a story-heavy RPG, we have to find a way for whoever is behind (which is always me, haha, because I like to take my time) to not see any spoilers. Or sometimes I'll get so sick of a game from seeing it on constantly, between me playing and then my fiance having a crack at it when I'm not playing. So believe it or not, guys, there can be downsides to having a lady who is into games as much as you. :P

Carparama

If I don't post more reviews tomorrow, someone yell at me.  I need to make time to get this done.

Carparama

And they are in the first topic.  We only have numbers right now, but I will add some text a little later.

TheClash603

Cadash is awesome!  Did you guys play it together?  I suggest maybe giving it another go.  I have friends who don't really like retro games and that is one of the few I can get them to play.  Moto Roader and Bomberman are the only other two TG16 games that go over well in my group.

Boxy Boy isn't that good IMO.  I got Boxxle for GB when I was a kid, remember being really disappointed with that too.

Legendary Axe II also seems to be more popular in your household than it should be...  lol.

Excited to see some comments.

Carparama

I did some research on it, and apparently I didn't level up enough early.  I do plan on giving it another go soon.  :)

I freakin' love Boxy Boy.  Some really nice touches for an early game.  As for LAII, how could you not love it?  :D  Of all the games to question (Yo'Bro!, TaleSpin) you choose Legendary Axe II?  ;)  It's a fun platformer!

Bardoly

Yes, give Cadash another chance.  You do need to 'grind' a couple of levels at the beginning, but after that, it's pretty smooth.

CPTRAVE

Yeah Cadash is awesome, I just passed it and will probably play it again soon.

Carparama

We tried Cadash again, but yikes.  She's not as good, and it became tedious.  Maybe with another gamer it'd be awesome.

Keith Courage got a 3 out of me, and she gave it a 2.  We gave the same ratings to King of Casino (2.5), Bravoman (1.5), Air Zonk (3.5) and Legendary Axe (3).  However, I've been playing Legendary Axe on the console, and I'm probably bumping it to 3.5 at least, if not a 4.  More fun on original console for sure.

Very cool, my girl does play video games but they require one of the following: a maze, fitting pieces together..did i mention a maze already? Oh and fitting pieces together. This limits my game pool but on a good note i just got cratermaze recently and she likes that one.

I think this thread represents a great project.  :pcgs:

It's fun because my wife would not be interested in anything outside of classic 80's arcade games and puzzle games.

Anyway, I think you two should both give PARASOL STARS another chance because it scored too low (from both of you! For shame!).

I really think it has a chance to be more appreciated and loved.
