My Genesis needs a new "hat" ...

I don't care about it having the box or anything...just a good old fashoned loose Power Base Converter please.

I've been wanting to pick up a PBC for awhile now and they regularly sell for $40+. I ended up getting one of the db_elec ones (they usually sell for ~$30 unless you splurge for one with FM sound). It doesn't play the cards, but I have a Master System for the rare occasion I want to play them. I just like having fewer systems hooked up.

On a side note, the Retron 5 is compatible with the db_elec converter and has the ability to play SMS games with either the original soundtrack or the FM soundtrack. It has me playing many of my SMS games again just to listen to the different musics as I've never had a console that could play the FM version.

Get a Power Base FM

This is the best option in my opinion.  Much smaller than the original, works on all units (the original PBC wont fit on a genny 2).  The only thing you're giving up is Sega MyCard games, which isn't that big of a deal IMHO.

I ditto the above responses opting for the db-elec PBFM. I sold my Sega PBC in a heartbeat after getting it. I have no need for SMS Card games, and sold the couple I had with it. the PBFM also fits the CDX much better.

Yeah I don't have any card SMS games.

Or the 3ad games which info remmeber correctly from that one game sack episode they were better then NES but still nothing to rush out to get either.

Definitely go for the PBFM.  I have the regular Power Base Mini from db_Electronics and it works like a charm, even bypasses some regional compatibility issues!  Now I can play the SMS version of New Zealand Story, one of the best ports in my opinion.

I don't know. Since all I have is a model one Genesis and I like the option of playing 3D and card based SMS games I might get the PBC. It is still slightly cheaper then the third party update.


Later for the fun I'll get the PB mini for use on any future retro a I might get or my CDX

I honestly think its worth it to have the card slot just for the 3D glasses option.  Some of the 3D games are pretty cool.  Missile Defense 3D is the best for sure.  I also use either my SMS or the PBC to run the 3d Glasses while I play laseractive 3d games.  The adapter for the laseractive is too pricey these days but the master system runs the glasses at the same sync so it works good.

I have a CDX and had a Sega PBC, it works fine...used it for a decade. I only sold it to get the PBFM from db-elec b/c I wanted that sweet FM tunes. One just needs to be mindful of the CDX power plug when putting on the PBC, it's fits but the cord needs to be slightly bent to one side when placing the convertor on top.

Tiny footprint so it makes everything neat and compact.

I would not have been happy spending $160 on it new back in the day, but for what it goes for now, it pays for itself in fun.  Especially if you have an Everdrive.

Ah, but the 32x version of VR is way better than the Saturn version. I also like Shadow Squadron and Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000 on the 32x... both are flawed but interesting. Not sure how MB 2000 has anything to do with Zaxxon, though.

It could be that I have no exposed to the 32X or anything I can recall seeing that makes me say YES!  That game makes it worth while. 

For me honestly if I can find even one game on a system or add on that makes it worth while I usually go for it if even just to experience the game.

The podcast "Retro Game Squad" recently did an episode about the 32X, and they talked about a number of games that they liked.  If you're into podcasts at all, you might want to give it a listen.

I think I am a lot like you in that it only really takes one good game to give me a reason to buy a system.  But generally once I do that, I find other games that I think are cool.  But I think I have a higher tolerance level for "bad" games because I can (and like to) appreciate them in their own time.  For example, people constantly talk about how poorly the original Playstation has aged.  But that thing was my jam in the late 90's, and I don't feel any differently about it when I play the games now.  But I completely understand why other people wouldn't feel that way about it.

It's funny that the Jag, 32X, and 3DO are all these maligned systems now.  When you think about it, they almost make up a little mini-generation of consoles, in that they all bridged this short gap between the decline of the 16-bit era, and the heyday of the Playstation.  All three of those consoles looked fucking awesome in 1993 and 1994 because they were doing things that blew the Genesis and SNES away, in audio-visual terms.  But then the Playstation and Saturn came out and pretty quickly made those systems obsolete.

I am the same. I own a jaguar because of raiden. I have it with a scart rbg cable to my sony bvm and that in it self is just an amazing experience with the best raiden port ever made (yeah ps1 is nice too but those loading times).

Pretty sure they its 2x 32bit chips not a 64bit and the jaguar version was the best hands down until ps1 released theirs. Still is is an amazing take on it. Vibrant colors, crisp graphics and a good soundtrack. It's the only game i play on my jag although it did come with cybermorph...but lets not talk about that.

I'm not even a Raiden fan, but the Western-budget-redraw-looking visuals popped out to me immediately. Aside from changing most (all?) of the pixelart, there are noticeably fewer tiles early on in the first stage. I can't go through the whole game comparing everything, but I'm guessing that the Jaguar is the worst port on consoles.
