I put this list together for a few reasons.  Obviously, it'd be a nice to have a quick reference point for FAQs on PCE Japanese RPGs, not only for our own convenience, but also for the new folks who pop in every so often with questions about them.  This list also gives us all an idea of what games still need to be covered.  Plus, I was thinking that we could discuss what games we plan on covering or FAQs that we're currently working on.  Finally, requests for new guides could also be made here.

For the time being, I stuck with stuff written by people who post here.  Please post links to walkthroughs by other folks if you know that the documents are helpful and if they were written for the PC Engine version of a given game.  Then I can edit the list in this post.  And Keranu, I was wondering if we could "sticky" this thread, if you think it's worthwhile.

I'll have to take a look around, but I have unfinished walkthroughs for Anearth Fantasy Stories, Ys IV, Neutopia, Dragon's Curse, Lunar SSS, TM/FEOEIV, plus newer versions of my GameFAQs walkthroughs I've been too lazy to post.

You could put the PCE ones I listed as being planned, since I do plan on finishing them. I have many more planned, but won't bother mentioning them until they get started.

How strict are you being with the whole RPG definition? Since there aren't enough PCE walkthroughs in english in general, I think it's a good idea to include walkthroughs for any kind f questy game where a walkthrough may actually be required, like Night Creatures, Ys III, etc.

And just because a game has an english version, that doesn't always make it much easier for some people or mean that some people won't try playing the PCE version first... so I think that it'd also be a good idea toiclude Turbo walkthroughs. Again, its not like there's a ton of them out there.

Any chance someone can post a walkthrough for Last Armageddon?

Justin, I intended to focus on games in which the Japanese might prove to be a formidable, if not insurmountable, obstacle for some players.  But you're right that some people might play the PCE versions of certain titles rather than the US ones.  And we might as well toss Night Creatures in there too, since it's such a classic.  So if you have FAQs for English RPG/quest games that you'd like me to include, post the links and I'll add them to the list.

As for the RPG definition, I think we can be pretty lenient about that.  I'd think that these types of games would be acceptable:

Traditional-style RPGs (Tengai Makyou, Emerald Dragon)
Overhead action-RPGs (Ys, Xanadu)
Sidescrolling quest games (Dragon's Curse, Night Creatures)
First-person dungeon crawlers (Dragon Knight II, Madou Monogatari)

I was thinking that some digital comics and sim games might be acceptable as well, but I wouldn't want to push it much beyond that.

I really liked Burai, as far as I got through it. I made it to the female human's scenario and couldn't get out of the village. This is another game I actually started a walkthrough for as well, but don't plan on continuing anytime soon.

If you complete your walkthrough, I'll definitely use it to play through the game.  :)

Then how about we start a seperate thread with walkthrough's in general, english & otherwise, for Turbo & PCE games of all genres? I know that many japanese walkthroughs are useful enough with an online translator.

Plus many non-rpg's like Ghost Manor are next to impossible without a walkthrough.

could I interest anyone in making a walkthrough for Monster maker or Monbit? i'll mail you the game if neccesary.

runinruder

Justin, I wouldn't object to you starting your own thread based on your own ideas, but I'd like to keep this thread going and maintain the original focus, which was on Japanese RPGs and adventure games. I've been talking with other writers about how great it would be to cover as many of these games as possible, since they're often the most daunting for people, and since some folks can make absolutely no progress or get any enjoyment out of particular titles due to the language barrier (that is, if they bother to make an attempt at all), which is not usually the case with US games or games in other genres.

As for Japanese walkthroughs, I think everyone would prefer good English documents to garbled translations of those works, which is another reason I'd like to keep this topic going as is.  And I know from experience that those Japanese walkthroughs don't always prove helpful in some of the most difficult spots.

In keeping with the "quest" theme, I'll be adding links to your Night Creatures and Shape Shifter FAQs (and mine as well) to the list when I get a chance.

Haha Basted, awesome.  Runin didn't you say someone was working on a Xanadu walkthrough?  I'd like to play through it but I just don't have the patience to fetch quest in japanese without knowing who to talk to.

runinruder

No, I said I was thinking about writing one for it.  I don't think I'll have the patience or desire to do it, though.  There are like six million different triggers to record during the overhead parts.

There are notes for the game up on the mindrec turbolist site.  They mention many of the important events that take place, but they're pretty vague at times and fail to mention some significant triggers, and they don't help at all with the last tower.

Okay, I was a little bored so I took a look around and found guides for Dragon's Curse, Dragon Slayer, Energy, and Legend of Xanadu.

I included the Xanadu link despite the misgivings I expressed in the post above this one because it's still a helpful document and it's by far the closest thing to a complete walkthrough available at this pont.  I've thought about writing up an addendum to fill in some of the blanks and posting it on these boards, but I wouldn't count on that happening.

My Anearth Fantasy Stories walk through is now (more or less) complete. Finally finished putting up the rest of the areas today. I've also put up pictures and descriptions of almost all of the items, weapons, spells, etc. in the game so even those of you without a manual have no excuse not to play. See the original post in this thread for the link.

If anyone has anything to add or corrections that need to be made please let me know and I'll try to eventually fix them.

Now it's time to show a little love to some of these other PC Engine games that have waited so patiently for me.

NecroPhile

Thanks, m1savage.  Your walk through looks to be quite polished and complete.  A.F.S. is now at the top of my list for whenever I finish playing my current RPG.

A great Japanese guide for the first Dragon Knight.  It is in Japanese, but the maps have events ordered in numbers, and can be a life saver with the ordered events of the later floors.

I actually started one the first time I played Xanadu. But because of the ridiculous triggers like Runin mentioned, I gave up on both the walkthrough and the game and started playing something else. :P

I probably would've stuck through it for longer if I hadn't already played half way through Dragon Slayer II and given up on that game for similar reasons.

Dragon Slayer II isn't bad at all. You'll probably breeze through it judging from some of the other games you've played. Actually I'm pretty interested to see what you think of it.

I'm looking forward to it, but I'm wary as well.  I feel like I'm in a slump lately, getting stuck in both Armageddon and Monster Maker.  I need to get things turned around.   :)

Nothing at all for Cosmic Fantasy II or Ys III: Wanderers From Ys (Turbo Duo) eh? You think it'd be possible to throw one up for those at all?

You shouldn't need a walkthrough for Ys III. It's about as straightforward and linear as they come.

Probably why no one has bothered to do one up.

But (even though I've beaten) Cosmic Fantasy 2, a walkthrough would be cool. I printed out the Ys Book I and II one - at college  [-X

Nice, big update today.  Added material for Cosmic Fantasy, Cosmic Fantasy 2, Cyber Knight, Dragon Knight III, Dragon Slayer II, Dungeon Explorer II, Emerald Dragon, Last Armageddon, Neutopia, Neutopia II, Snatcher, Ys I, Ys II, and Ys IV.

Some of these guides are based on other systems' versions of the games.  There are obviously going to be some differences, but in most of the cases, the differences are so minute that it'd hardly be worthwhile to write up an entirely new guide just for the PCE one.

Obviously, I didn't read through these things word for word, so if there's anything terribly wrong with any of them, please let me know.  And if you know of any other guides that should be added to the list (English only, please), post the links here.

Does anyone have a link to a LaPlace No Ma walkthrough? Stupid stupid gamefaqs has a walkthru for the SFC version listed in the TCD spot. Apparently the two games are either really different or whomever did this walkthru skipped over some very pertinent info. It's also based on an English translation, so it's pretty useless to me. XD

Thanks for this great resource, btw. Looks like a lot of great RPG/Adventure games are represented. I might take on Neo Metal Fantasy first since there's a walkthru for it, and I really needed the Dragon Knight III walkthru as well. (I just finished DKII using a walkthru, great game and pretty easy to play if you don't know Japanese so long as you have a translation of the menus at least. The person that did the DKII walkthru I used missed a few triggers, but I figured it out on my own eventually, tho the one to make the rat appear for the last time was a pain to find.)

mobiusclimber

I hate to reply to myself, but I just started a walkthru for Aurora Quest, if anyone is interested in that. Not sure how far I'll get, and since this is my first walkthru it will surely be pants, but I couldn't find one so I thought I might as well try my hand.

I for one would be interested, been putting that one off, but a FAQ would be cool :)

I'll try, can't guarantee anything since I don't understand Japanese at all, so it'll all be up to trial and error whether I can do it or not. But I started jotting down notes as I play the game, so hopefully I can get thru it and get something written up. It's a real shame more PCE games don't have faqs.
