2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

Are there any Playstation 2 controllers with a good D-pad?

I'm looking for a controller to play 2D games on my Playstation 2. If all PSOne pads work for all PS2 games, then a PSX pad will do.

Specifically what I'm looking for is a single D-pad that plays well and isn't 4 seperate buttons. I'd also prefer that the shape buttons are responsive enough. I don't need all six in one spot like a street fighting pad, but wouldn't mind either.

Does anyone know the names of any PS2 compatible pads that I might like?

Ive got the Logitech wireless ps2 controller. At first i hated the dpad, since its got these weird mechanical actuaters under it. Its very loose and clicky sounding. Ive been using it to play shooters with though, and im starting to like it. As long as you dont lift your thumb off of it. I'd recommend you try before you buy though, as most people might hate it.

There is a Saturn controller for the PS2.  Lemme try and find the link....

I'm still trying to find the link....  Still trying, leave me alone for a bit will ya?....

Hey!  I found some links!  Check 'em out!

It looks like they are all sold out.  Maybe try eBay.  Maybe AirRaidX has one for sale.

I use the Mad Catz item #8216 (Controller Pad Pro). It's a PS2 controller clone but it has a great solid D-pad, plus concave analog sticks unlike the convex analog sticks on the "official" controllers.

I never really liked the saturn pad, but everyone (and i mean EVERYONE) always recommends them as the best pads ever for shooters. Maybe i never gave it enough of a chance.

Saturn pad ultimate RULES, you should hunt one of those down.

There was this one controller that actually used a click stick. I played around with it in stores but never actually got to play games with it.

Saturn PS2 pads there the best to me.

Still most importers have sold out of them.

Most you can hope for is finding one used at this point.

The d-pads on the sf pads from nuby, are not to bad but i feel there controllers are a little too thick.

I really like Mad Catz controllers. I have two GameCube clones from them. I'm not sure what the item numbers are, but one is a little bigger and one is a little smaller than a standard GC controller. I think the regular GC controllers are too small so I always use the larger Mad Catz one. It's perfect and also has a great D-pad. All the buttons are larger, too. Good for playing the oldschool collections (Sonic, Megaman, etc) I have for my GC. The D-pads on the standard GC controllers are waaay too small and suck balls.

The plan now is to buy a MadCatz until I can get something special like those Saturn pads. I have a pair of Street Fighter II pads for Xbox, but haven't had a chance to test them out on some good 2D games yet. If they work well enough for street fighting, I'll probably pick up a pair for PS2.

Back when nodtveidt first suggested MadCatz pads, I still couldn't find anything with a single D-Pad locally. I guess it was because stores hadn't restocked since X-Mas, because I've now found them in a few places around here.
