I played a fair amount of Exile [which I am playing through again] and Dragon Egg. I was a little disappointed in Dragon Egg.

Obfuscate

W-Ring - Meh, not as good as I hoped.

geise

What don't you like about W-Ring?  I was thinking about picking it up soon.

Re: W-Ring

It's not that it is horrible, and others may like it but for me everything was just average. Average graphics, average sound, average gameplay, nothing special about level design, bosses are average to below average, there are 5 weapons but none are that cool and one overpowers every boss. There are a couple sort of cool spots but I was looking forward to the game and wasn't really impressed.

As soon as you go off the cliff, move to the left.  It still takes a bit of air dancing at first, but you'll get to an area near the left wall that is clear all the way down.

EDIT: Here's a video I recorded a little while back that shows the level. This starts right at the cliff jump:
what does the text at the very beginning read?

I tried this game years ago via emulation I but don't remember a thing about it now.

It is Le Sad to hear it is so helplessly mediocre. IMG

I like it. It has many generic aspects to it, but it isn't a cakewalk and certainly isn't an "overexposed" title that everyone has played (so you feel like you're unearthing levels that time has forgotten...even by shoot-em-up fans).

It grows on you.

Of course, keep in mind that Armed Formation F/Armed F Formation/F Armed/FArmed also grew on me (I like the stupid game).

They share many parallels (some moments of "inspiration", if we are being nice, but a majority of each game features totally generic mechanics/enemies/AI/etc.)

Yet, despite this mediocrity of presentation, you keep going back and want to get a little bit further, and then they start growing on you...

If it appeals to you that's all that matters.  I (along with punk) like Energy.  Others hate it, but if you find something you think you might like and it's cheap go for it.  You can always sell it latter if it's not your cup of tea.

I've found that even some of the turds of the PCE/TG16 library I find some redeeming qualities in...enough to keep them.

That said, I am determined to complete Tale Spin lately. Read: masochist

Speaking of "turds"... I played a bit of Samurai Ghost yesterday.  Damn, I wish I could play that game on the normal difficulty setting.  I get to the level where you have to outrun the lava & usually die there, or the level after.  It's a shame, as some of the later boss fights are really cool.

One of these days I'll play it in earnest.

I love Samurai Ghost, but it is challenging. I still struggle on bits I know (dodging the cloud boss who has lightning...I forget to hit him! So I spend a long time dodging and never actually attacking!)

I haven't figured everything out, but there are different paths in the game (did you know you can jump over gates?! Yup, you can. It's not even that tricky. So, sometimes a second, hidden gate lies behind the initial one at the end of a level).

Our fellow forum member NinjaSpirit beat this damn game many years ago, in 1/100 of the time it took me. He made it his goal to beat the damn thing and was much better than I could have been.

Anyway, there is hope, but, if you're like me and don't use FAQs/guides/videos, well...damn, you're in for some work.   :pcgs:

Phase

Just started playing some Military Madness this weekend for the first time ...game ownz :D ..I'm addicted.
I like the music and sound but I have to keep the volume low for some reason ..to much repetition maybe?
Also I think the game would be a lot nicer with some damn color I know the story is on the moon but man its depressing, though not quite Legendary Axe 2 depressing :-#. I wish I would have bought this game back in the day. Also whats with time when playing this game, it must cause a problem with the space time continuum ..some sort of black hole? :-k

Are any of the remakes worth playing?

munchiaz

Started playing Ys III today. big departure from Ys I & II but so far i really like it. Music is still just as bitchin as Ys I & II

johnnykonami

I'm also playing through Military Madness, currently on RECTOS.  My first time playing through, and I love it, but some of those hard mode stages are a beast!  Finishing up a play through on Dragon's Curse as well, a game I beat dozens of times as a kid.  At the last boss.

technozombie

I'm bouncing back and forth between Y's I&II and Soul Blazer on the SNES. My son loves the Y's music, and I'm finding the unconventional battle system to be pretty fun. After Xmas I think I'm going to buy Street Fighter 2.

Oh yeah, it's the best of any videogame I ever played. Nothing ever topped it overall - some tracks in FF games here and there mind you, but nothing overall. I recorded the best tracks from Ys I-III to cassette and used to listen to them in the car for years BITD. Of course now with my cell and a 16 GB card, I get to have 'em all the time in MP3 form.

This reminded me, here go some amazing fan arrangements of Ys tracks you likely enjoy. They are blindingly impressive!

I love the "02-Scaredsim-Medley-Morning" one; one minute into it is where it really gets good!

Nightwolve I loved it when you allowed us to use the CD Tracks from the turbo game into Ys Eternal on PC.  A very late thank you for that one.

BTW quite a few new guys in this thread.  Welcome!

When you get near the end, make sure you have a few different save slots going.  I just recently screwed myself while only using one save slot and got to the end boss with no way of beating him (I don't want to give spoilers here) and no way of going back to town and preparing for the end. :)

I am starting a new run of beyond shadowgate.  Love that game.

Thanks for the input roflmao, I'm almost done with Soul Blazer and I'm going to focus on Y's.

Playing more Ys III.  Fuck the light statue boss. Took me like 30 minutes to beat him. I had to hide from the 5 crystals that would come out of the wall, then jump and take one swipe at a time. So annoying

Yeah, the Boss.  I think the last part, she flies horizontally across the screen shooting these oval beams which I have no part dodging while engaged in combat but then she fires off these spreading lasers that always seem to get me and/or that tracking/homing shot.  I thought maybe of just getting out of the way (upper screen/corner) when she fires off those lasers would be best instead of trying to dodge them?

It is a great shooter, tight controls and nice soundtrack.  I wasn't expecting much when I picked it up originally, needless to say I was quite surprised.

Passed it!!!  I switched to the male fighter ship and upgraded the 'V' weapon to max.    My favorite stage has gotta be level 6.  I love flying/dodging through an asteroid field to cool tunes :)

Yes, I love stage 5 and 6, great tunes and action. Glad you beat the Boss. For me I memorize when she comes to the bottom and go in the top corner when she does then go back down. I don't follow back and forth when she shoots those blue energy ovals, I just avoid when she comes over me and keep shooting.

I am currently giving Dead Moon another play.  The last time I played this I did not get around to completing it as I am shocking at shooters and I kept bombing out on the last level.

Maybe I will have better luck this time ;-)

I know it's been mentioned in other threads, but I'm currently playing through Cosmic Fantasy 2 and Bomberman '93.  So close to the end of BM93 I can taste it.  The last time I finished Cosmic Fantasy 2 was in the late 90s so it's been awhile.  Sadly, I sold my copy after beating it thinking I'd never have the urge to play through it again (so much grinding...) but time heals all wounds.  Thanks again to Duo_R for this copy.  It's fun to play through it again (though can be frustrating at parts and the manual isn't all that helpful).  Since it's one of only two turn-based jrpgs released on the turbo, it's definitely worth checking out.

MrPoppy

What I've been playing, courtesy of Santa...

Dungeon Explorer: cool little action/RPG. Completed it with a fighter. Will definitely re-visit from time-to-time with other character classes.

Final Lap Twin: it's a pretty simple and repetitive game but the quest mode is a neat experience.

Image Fight: cool shooter, uber hard though. Only have gotten to level three, and that's using auto shot.

Right now, working on playing through the Wonderboy and Star Soldier series.

I've gotten to the last level of Wonderboy in Monster Land, wasn't able to get to the final boss yet. The part where you have to answer the quiz question has held me up a few times. I've taken to snapping pictures of the screen each time and by trial and error getting the questions right. I don't know if anyone else has done it but I'll eventually have all the right answers in pictures and can post them when I do.

Also been playing Super Star Soldier and Final Soldier. Beat FS but not SSS yet. I think I like SSS better, more balanced. The 2/5 minute modes are awesome though. I can see myself playing those for a long time. Any other games have those as standard options?

Been playing a fair bit of Gate of Thunder. Badass game, but I really such at shooters. It's kinda funny, when I finally beat a level I do it in one ship, mainly because the penalty for death is painful in the game. Still badass as all hell. Stage 3 here I come.
