I have noticed for a long time that people who have only played Ys on Master System, SNES, Genesis, and PS2 have been for years misspelling and mispronouncing Ys. I made this video to clear this mess up for the "average joe gamers" who are totally unaware of the awesome Turbo Grafx-16.  :D

CrackTiger

Falcom/Hudson themselves often spell it "Y's", like the Ys IV disc.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

Personally, it doesn't really hugely matter on how it's spelled or pronounced, since by the looks of it, there seems to be acceptable multiple (albeit even official) ways for both of the aspects. I have questioned how to say Ys, however, in which the promotional video that SuperPCEngineGrafx has titled "Power Up!" had said it as "Yeez" (as in "jeez" but with a "Y") for mentioning Ys Book I & II. I've always had pronounced it as "Yees" (as "yeast" without the "T") from when I've first seen the title in spite of it. I wouldn't mind it if a person were to use one of the variants in the factors at all if I was exposed to it (though "Ywies/Whys/Wise" does sound a bit ridiculous, and the spell check feature also gives a suggestion to correct Ys with "Y's", as well :P).

It's pronounced, ease, as in grease, without the "gr".  I've listened to many a japanese version of the various games, & that's how it's always pronounced.

I know it's pronounced Ease- but that has never stopped me from referring to it as E's.  Then again- being from Queens- I mangle many a word to my taste- for example- the word "bastard" leaves my lips as "bastid".   :)

This isn't even debatable, since an apostrophe is clearly absent from all Ys logos (except apparently on the sega cartridge), and it is clearly pronounced by the narrator in the opening sequence of the game (Turbo Duo/CD Version).  So there's your proof if you run into a special kid who insists otherwise.

There's never been any debate or anything. Ys fans have known how to pronounce the title for over 20 years. Aside from the Turbo-CD version's voice, the SMS version attempts to describe how it's pronounced at the title screen.

If some non-Y's fans want to call it something else they have every right to do so. Since official releases have Ys spelled "Y's", they can spell it however they want too. Many series and main characters are pronounced differently by different people and there's nothing wrong with it. The PC Engine isn't strictly the "Peeshee Enjeen".

But even if someone wanted to be a pwnage nerd and try to trash people for mispronouncing the title of one of the cart versions... why should they know how to pronounce an unusual word like Ys if they've only played carts from the series?

This is what the real hero of Ys looks like-

But I don't think anyone's a noob for mistakenly believing that Adol Kristein has red hair or that he isn't 100 pounds over weight.

Ok 2 possibilities.

1. The most of CD labeling department of Hudson Soft had a serious flu outbreak that day so they called some of the American Hudson Soft staff to label copies of Ys IV.

It seems like in Japan, Adol's name is always pronounced "odd-dull"  But, in the US, we usually hear it as "a-doll".  I think in Ys 6, they pronounced it that way, besides the 2 Turbo games.  I forget how it was pronounce in the anime english dub.

I said whys until I read EGM and they demanded that I pronounce it "ease" long before the game's release.  I still do, I don't do the quick decay such as east without the T.  To me it looks like Ys is plural, so that the way I pronounce it.  Looks like more than one Y.  Aw hell they should have just called the game something else.  Silly Japanese n00bcakes.

From people like you who played video games since the 80s, yes.

From people like me  (which is a majority of gamers) who got into games during the Genesis vs. SNES wars? No.

How are people like you a majority of gamers??  I never owned a Turbo ( besides a TE, and 2-3 games) bitd, yet I knew about Ys.   Ys games were on both Snes, and the Genesis so it was part of the system "war" as you put ti.

Which is during the same time period that Ys was released on the TG-CD.  You do realize that the Turbo is part of the same generation as the Genny and SNES, right?!?  Anyways, considering that various incarnations of Ys have appeared on a dozen different systems, it's a sure bet that more than just us old folks have heard of it before, though I wouldn't argue that it's a household name (in the U.S.) akin to Final Fantasy.

But the Iphone game wouldn't be tied up in legal crap.  The one for Turbo is(though, Hudson won't talk about it).  I think it's Thomas Haden Church that's holding back the bandwagon, since he's a "star" now, maybe he feels he needs more money for his role as Goban!  This ofcoarse, is just my theory, but, it's the only thing that makes sense.  IIRC, Ys has been rated for quite some time by the ESRB or whatever.

The Adol pic is from the original PC-88 Ys game. Therefore all subsequent Adols are crooked imposters.

The Sword Battlin' pic is a mock-up I did for an old thread, showing how Ys would've turned out if Hudsonhad  somehow had enough money to afford to hire the geniuses who took Makaimura and made it "Ghosts 'N Goblins".

It's definately pronounces 'ease'. The word 'Ys' is actually from gaelic, and it's basically the gaelic version of the Atlantis myth. There's actually a real myth about a vanished city called Ys that was buried under the ocean.
