  The first movie (that I remember) that made me cry. Did it you?

I was just shocked about the amount of characters that died (just in the first few minutes of the movie).

SuperDeadite

I don't remember crying (and yes kittens are quite tasty).  What I do remember though was hearing Ultra Magnus use the line "Open damnit open!" Hearing a cartoon swear was the coolest part of the whole movie to me back then.

It made me more pissed than sad, so I didn't cry but rather raged "Why the hell did they kill Optimus?!?  This sucks!"

I don't think real tears fell, but my eyes definitely watered up.

Yeah, but I cry at Kiki's Delivery Service so that doesn't mean much.

No, I didn't cry when Optimus died, I was still in a "What the hell Rodamus" state.  For months after I saw the movie the scene would play out in my head almost every night as I layed down to go to bed.

...I was dissapointed when Optimus returned later and he didn't hunt down Rodamus first thing to get his revenge.

Ah yes, TF the movie. That was the first time my young mind comprehended that my beloved Transformers were nothing but a cheap marketing gimmick. I watched all those Transformers get blown away, and I just sat there and thought 'they're doing this so they can make a bunch of new ones to sell'. That was officially, when I got off the TF band wagon.

As to crying, no. Mainly because I was pissed off.

Yeah, but not too much.  Seeing a lot of the old Autobots get decimated by Megatron was worse for me at the time.

I think there was one episode where Optimus came back, but he was evil or a zombie and went after Rodimus. And then in the next episode, they fixed him and he was good or something.

I remember going to the theatre two times a day for a few days to see that movie. It was like a dream come true.

As for Optimus Prime, I shed a tear or two, but I remember a mother had to take her child out of the theatre because the kid couldn't handle Prime's death.  lol

This is absolutely impossible as Rodimus did not exist in the movie by that point in time.

Quote from: Lord ThagI just sat there and thought 'they're doing this so they can make a bunch of new ones to sell'.
That's what a lot of people thought.  But apparently those people weren't around when they kept bringing in more and more characters during the seasons without killing off the old ones.  No need to kill off old characters to sell new ones, they just did it because in war there are casualties, but in TV land nothing is allowed to die because TV is for precious young children.  I think the word "shit" also helped sell the new toys.

How is Rodimus not existing by this point??  He was in the movie since early on, and actually catches the Matrix during Primes death scene.

Rodimus is barely even in the movie for the final 5 minutes.  He has what, maybe 3 or 4 lines total?  What an ass he is!

Yup, I cried, & still get teary eyed to this very day!  Same goes for when Dinobot sacrificed himself in Beast Wars, but, that's another story, since there ain't much BW love up in here.  As for Rodimus, I never understood why most people don't like him?  I liked him, & the idea of someone, totally new & inexperienced trying to lead the Autobot cause, I thought that was cool, he had so many doubts about himself, & had so much to learn, but was capable of leading.  Still, I was glad to have Optimus back, no doubt, even if it was for only 5 episodes(6 if you count his Quintesson zombie episode).

I thought Beast Wars was the best of the spin off series'. It definitely got better over time.

I have this movie on DVD! I didn't cry, sadly. (mmm! Kittens!) I had heard about it before I watched the movie. I can only imagine what a shock it must have been...

I'm afraid I wasn't much of a big fan of Transformers until I saw the 2007 movie.

Well, I can Marvel no-prize this, if need be. The current cannon name for the guy is Rodimus due to some bullshit involving Hot Rod magazine. Also, in Japan he is called Rodimus, and the "leader" version Rodimus Convoy.

Also, the characters very much were killed off to make way for new toys. That's just the way the business works. Of course the old toys/characters were so popular (much more than their replacements) that they started a practice of re-issuing the things almost immediately. This was usually done with mail-order campaigns in the US, but in Japan they made a bigger deal out of it at retail with stuff like the "Bye Bye Convoy" packs and such. Come to think of it, they are still re-issuing these suckers...and the Japanese versions are still better. Some things never change.

I'm amazed that after 22 years I still remember that movie.

Orson Wells' voice scared the living hell out of me when I saw Transformers in the theater the first time. The voice actors (I assume we're talking the '86 animated movie) did an astounding job; Robert Stack, Scatman Crothers, and Eric Idle were also in that lineup. Two thumbs up!

As for the 2007 movie, I was nonplussed. Call me old sch00l.

Not all of them.  I have most of the old catalog's that came with my G1 figs, & the one for season 3 includes Jetfire/Skyfire, Omega Supreme, Bumblebee, Warpath, Powerglide, Cosmos, Seaspray, Beachcomber, the Arielbots, Perceptor, Blaster, the Dinobots, the Protectobots, the deluxe Autobots(Whirl & Roadbuster, who never made a cartoon appearence), the deluxe Insecticons(same deal), Soundwave(with Buzzsaw), Blitzwing, Astrotrain, the Insecticons, the Combaticons, the Stunticons, the Constructicons, Ravage, Rumble, Frenzy, Dirge, Thrust, Ramjet, & Starscream.  And that's considering that the Insecticons, (if you believe it was the real Insecticons, not the clones) were changed into Scourge & the Sweeps.

The business of what... the Transformers?  GI Joe didn't kill anyone off.  Duke was supposed to get the axe, but they pussied out and let him live.  Strawberry Shortcake didn't kill anyone off.  Neither did Cabbage Patch Kids.  Only Transformers.  Like I said, old characters don't have to  literally die to make way for new ones.  They can easily just be pushed to the sideline.  This is fact.

nectarsis

Did they HAVe to..no, was it a big reason, yes.  GI Joe was one of the few shows of the time with such a big "cast".  Joe also (usually) didn't use the regulars as often, or for so long.  Characters there just "went on assignment" or just weren't in eps.  After the movie many of the old figures were "shelved" for awhile, not reissued "right away".
