Hey

I've started this game, I'm a few hours in, at the city lost in time or whatever it is. Anyway I have a question about the battle system. The game is fun so far but the battles are way too often, it's like every 3 steps and there is another enemy. It's to the point of not being fun. Do the battles lessen in frequency as you go or is this what I have to expect the whole way? Anything like in Dragon Slayer where you get the glasses {?} that allow you to see your enemies later on?

OldRover

The battle frequency doesn't really change much, though near the end, the number of enemies drops. It gets to the point where once everyone has weapons capable of damaging everything onscreen, you only ever get 2 enemies max. Ever. Kinda defeats the point. :D And there is nothing like that in the game... you just gotta deal with the frequency. It's annoying, but it's the way the game is played.

The encounter rate is what it is - some places are a bit worse than others, but it's a pain in the ass the whole game through.  Stick with it, though; it's worth the effort.

Cadette Babette is worth the effort.
This "max-level forum psycho" () destroyed TWO PC Engine groups in rage: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook "Because Chris 'Shadowland' Runyon!," then the other by Aaron Nanto "Because Le NightWolve!" Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together... Both times he blamed the Aarons in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged, destructive, toxic turbo troll gang!

Joe Redifer

The game is really only worth playing through once because of the sheer annoyance of the battles.  As I played through it back in the day, I made sure to capture all of the cinema intermission cut scenes onto Super VHS videotape (which has more resolution than real life, hence the "Super") so that way I could enjoy them whenever without the annoyance of playing the game.  Not sure if I still have that tape.

If you did, that'd be super.

I did that too, but the tape is long gone.

But did you do it with Super VHS?  If not, then clearly you did not have as much enjoyment as I did as Super VHS has been scientifically proven to multiply enjoyment by a factor of 6.8.

SignOfZeta

No, by the time I could really afford Super VHS all the decks still on the market were shit.

but was the Duo outputting S-video? If not then the enjoyment factor stays flat.

Are all the cinemas on Youtube or should I get the visual collection?
=)

Of course not. Virtually nothing put out s-video back then other than other s-video decks. They still made better recordings though.

Also, Thanks guys, I'll stick it out.

The Enjoyment factor is multiplied by a thousand when said Super VHS tape is put into a bluray player.  It looks better than jesus.

I used to do a cable access show when I was younger and we used S-VHS for recording our shows. Man that brings back memories.

The encounter rate in the game is pretty brutal, but it masks the fact that the game is very short for an RPG. Stick with it, you'll get through the game in no time.

Cosmic Fantasy 2 is quite a conflicting game. The characters are decently interesting, the story is pretty good, and I love the big twist. On the other hand, as an RPG, the game is pretty poor. Poison doesn't work, damage isn't random at all, and there's really not much strategy or choice in the battles. The actual gameplay portions of the game are just so... weak. And yet I enjoyed playing the game when I was younger and felt it was all worth it. I'm not sure I'd make the same judgment call now.

SignOfZeta

I absolutely loved the game back in the day. At the same time, I'd have to say it has some of the poorest combat in the history of JRPGs.

I tend to overlook the game's shortcomings because it's a 64K game... but at the same time, I get the feeling that the game was never completely finished. Obviously status effects were intended but never coded in, many items serve absolutely no purpose (Ball Of Lito, Royal Sword, etc), and there are just too many characters that are templated off of other characters. Also, the US manual depicts playable characters that never seem to actually show up in the game, but one of them shows up as an NPC in the secret town. Savegame hacking can create a whole mess of new characters for your party. My favorite is when you can play as a chicken. :)

I released an early build of a CF2 savegame editor on the Frozen Utopia site some years ago.

https://web.archive.org/web/2000/http://www.frozenutopia.com/downloads.html

Not all the features I wanted in it are implemented, but you can edit any one of the 338 bytes of the game's savefile. It works on emulators, or on the real thing if you have a flash cart.
